Top Ten Refrigerators in India by electricity consumption and size

By on May 6, 2015

There are multiple types and brands of refrigerators or fridges available in the market today. Everyone wishes to be informed before making a buying decision of a refrigerator. Most sources on the Internet provide details on features and reviews. Electricity consumption hardly becomes the deciding factor. To help people make electricity consumption as deciding factor, we at Bijli Bachao have decided to put up a list of Top Ten refrigerators in India by electricity consumption and size.

Top Refrigerator
  • The basis of this ranking is the data from BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency). BEE data contains yearly electricity consumption of a refrigerator and this information is self reported by the manufacturers. The data is calculated in test conditions.
  • We have taken the data on electricity consumption and categorised it by the capacity or volume of the refrigerator. The refrigerator with the least value of units/lts is given the highest ranking. Multiple models with the same value are given the same rank.
  • The list below contains only the top ten ranked refrigerators. List of all BEE star rated refrigerators are available on the useful links given below.
  • Use the ‘Add to compare’ icon to compare the monetary value of the units available from BEE based on your tariff from your electricity provider and your usage.
  • Please note Direct Cool refrigerators are single door refrigerators and Frost Free refrigerators are multi door refrigerators.
  • We regularly update this list as new models get added in the BEE list of refrigerators.

Hi.

I am looking for a refrigerator configuration with a high storage volume (~250 litres) and literally having least freezer compartment and maximum vegetable basket (for basic vegetarian needs). So my budget also is limited to INR 20K, so I had to do my research for some more information.

Closest one to my budget was VZ255 from Videocon but with a deficit of 25L as it comes only with 225L storage and consuming 224 units/year. Unfortunately its veg basket especially is smaller compared to other brands in lesser bracket

I saw LG models with exact capacity i need in single door, mentioned in this site. But to my dismay, still none of them are on display in the showrooms near to me?

This is IT hub of Bengaluru where I stay still all outlets around my place are selling 2014 rated stuff even now (i mean only for single door, double doors have new models put out there) and by their own confession the dealers are more interested to clear their old stock only.

And believe me, they are all overpriced DCs by 2-5k on various models just to fake them as new items. This can easily make out looking at the BEE rating which have fell by one star from last year.

In this backdrop I have a few questions going in my mind at the moment:

(a) For my requirement, should I wait for the 250L storage model from LG which consumes only 209 units/year or do I go for a double door in the same price range as single door above but with more energy consumption? In either case, I may need to stretch by 2-3K ?

(b) Since I see that in single door there is no significant increase in veg basket size even though the storage volume increases from 215L to 250L storage of fridges. This is not the case with double door but then should i need to invest on a separate freezer which i wont use at all and pay for higher electricity consumption than required?

(c) Or are there any better options currently available that i missed or anything coming soon? Also there is no Power Cool option in 250L of DC at present but could it be added in soon future? I did check the samsung convertible freezer model which comes with 302L storage, but that simply goes out of budget for me.

(d) Or should I have to defer my pruchase until I get all my requirements in one model and dealers are kind enough to get them on display? I dont think if anyone will ever come up with that for my sake! But also don’t know if anyone out there looking for a similar configuration and struggling to decide like me!

Aprreciate any help or advise out of your think tank..
