Refrigerators are one of the few appliances, apart from televisions, which have become omnipresent today. Almost in every urban household you might find a refrigerator standing in a corner of the house. It would not be an exaggeration if it is said that refrigerators have become an integral part of urban lives today. It performs a myriad of functions and contribute largely towards making our lives more comfortable. So it is needless to say that one must do a lot of research before going ahead with buying a refrigerator in order to buy a product which is best suited to one’s needs.

Different types of refrigerators

The basic function of all the refrigerators remains the same. It contains a refrigerant which absorbs the heat from the articles kept inside and transfers it to the surroundings (this is why it is advisable to keep a refrigerator at least 6 inches away from any obstruction).

Refrigerators can be broadly classified into these categories:

  1. Direct Cool Refrigerators – Also called as Single door refrigerator, as these have only one door on them. The freezer is inside the refrigerator. One thing which is attributed to this kind of refrigerators is that they tend to form frost in the freezer in a matter of a few days on continuous use (depends on the usage). In a single door refrigerator, the refrigerant passes near the freezer first to maximise the cooling in the freezer. These refrigerators are available in the capacity only upto 300 Litres and not more than that. So if you are looking to buy a refrigerator with more capacity, single door refrigerators are not for you.
  1. Frost-free refrigerator – As the name suggests, they prevent the formation of frost in the freezer consequently providing convenience of not switching of the refrigerator to remove ice, hence the name ‘frost-free’. They have a small pre-installed heating element which prevents the formation of frost in the freezer. However, this heating element also consumes electricity thus increasing the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. The minimum capacity in this type of refrigerators is 240 Litres. Frost free refrigerators can be further divided into the following types:
    • Top mount refrigerator – In this, the freezer is on the top and the fridge is beneath it. It is very common in household now-a-days. It is popularly known as Double Door Refrigerator.
    • Bottom top refrigerator – Its again a double door refrigerator in which the freezer is below the fridge. It is gaining grounds as the user does not need to bend to put or take out articles in/from the fridge. As the refrigerator is used more often than the freezer in a household, this offers a good alternative to the existing refrigerators. These refrigerators consume more energy than Top mount refrigerator.
    • Multi-door refrigerator – There are more than two doors in a multi-door refrigerator. There are different doors/drawers to access different sections of the same refrigerator. Needless to say, its electricity consumption is higher too.
    • Side by side refrigerator – Side by side refrigerators offer ever more space and flexibility. It usually is double door, one door provides access to the freezer and the other to the fridge. There are some models in this category that have attached water dispenser or ice dispenser wherein one can directly obtain chilled water or ice without opening the door of the refrigerator. Since they provide an altogether separate space of the size equal to the fridge itself, it is needless to say that the electricity consumption is higher, and so is the cost of buying it. The water and ice dispensers may further add to electricity consumption as it may provide some space for leakage of air inside the refrigerator.

In addition to the types mentioned above, there are some technologies which are being introduced in the refrigerators now-a-days:

  • Inverter Technology is the most promising technology available in market these days. This technology not only improves energy efficiency (electricity consumption), but it also keeps temperature more consistent thereby keeping food fresh for long. It saves 20-40% of electricity as compared to regular compressors. • There are some models of refrigerators in which you are provided with an option to convert the freezer to the refrigerator if and when you have more requirement of storage space in the refrigerator.
  • There is one path-breaking technology which has been doing rounds in the refrigerators lately. It concerns keeping the contents of the refrigerator cool even during a power cut. There are a few variants available in the market depending on the brand concerned. For instance, LG Durachill has a feature of ensuring the coolness of the contents of the freezer for 2 hours during power cut. Another variant, LG Power Cut Evercool is a step further. It keeps the contents of the fridge as well as the freezer cool for 7 hours during power cuts. The prices of these variants are higher than the regular ones.

The green angle

For all the environment-enthusiasts out there, refrigerator manufacturers now-a-days are coming with the eco-friendly variants. The only harm a refrigerator can cause to the environment is through the refrigerant. CFC is the most common refrigerant used now-a-days and it contributes to the greenhouse emission. However R-134 or R600A are viable and eco-friendly alternatives to this. A detailed description of the types of refrigerants can be found in “Comparison of various refrigerants (R-410A, R-22, R-290, R-134A) used for Air Conditioners and Refrigerators”.

Always look for BEE star rating

Bureau of Energy efficiency rates various brands and models of refrigerators on their efficient use of electricity. So always look for star rating. To know more about the BEE star rating program and compare refrigerators, check our links:

    1. BEE Star Rating program explained.
    2. Comparison of various brands of refrigerators on BEE star rating in India.

Please note that currently BEE star rating is available only for Single Door (Direct Cool) and Double Door (Frost Free) type of models. It is not available for multi door, side-by-side and bottom freezer models. In case you are looking for refrigerator of such type, then the best way to ensure that it is energy efficient is to look for models with inverter technology.

A few important things you should keep in mind

    • The inverter technology, which is available in air conditioners, is also available in refrigerators. It optimises the electricity consumption of the refrigerator by regulating the power supply to the compressor. These are the most electricity-efficient models available in the market both in single door as well as double door.
    • Your eating habits also have an impact on the decision of the right refrigerator for you and your family. Refrigerators today are available also according to the fridge to freezer ratio. (usually 70:30 or 80:20). So if you are a vegetarian, then it is advisable to go for 80:20 model as you would need more space for storing veggies. If you are a non-vegetarian 70:30 model is recommended.
    • People have a tendency of stuffing the refrigerator disregarding the fact that this increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. So it is advisable to store only those articles which might perish otherwise. Avoid buying oversized refrigerators and using refrigerator as an almirah.

    How size effects electricity consumption

With increasing prosperity demands of the families in India are increasing and with increasing demand, the size of refrigerators is also increasing. But increased size increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator as well. It is observed (based on BEE data) that with every liter increase in the volume the electricity consumption of refrigerators increase by 0.5-1 units (in the same star rating band). So a 5 star 350 liters refrigerator may consume about 50-100 units per year more than a 5 star 250 liters model. Thus it is very important to pick refrigerator of right size while buying. Also refrigerators are most efficient when they are full (not over loaded). With empty refrigerators you pay more for what you use.

Other factors that impact electricity consumption

Defrost Mode: A direct cool refrigerator that needs manual defrost consumes lesser electricity than auto defrost or frost free refrigerator. A frost-free consumes 30-50% more electricity for same volume and star rating. But a frost-free gives a lot more convenience.

Ice Makers: Many new side-by-side models have ice makers that increase the electricity consumption by 10-15% as the ice dispenser creates a low insulation area, which increases electricity consumption.

More features more electricity consumption: Modern day refrigerators are loaded with features like moisture control, etc. Every feature adds to the electricity consumption (unless it is a feature designed for electricity saving). So choose the features that are helpful for your daily use. Do not just buy a loaded refrigerator just for having a feel of every feature. As every feature comes for extra cost: upfront for buying and on going for use.

pl explain the difference between digital inverter v/s linear inverter for side by side fridge of around 600lit….and also suggest top 3 models in india

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

The movement of compressor motor in a linear inverter is different from regular digital inverter. In Linear inverter, there are less moving parts and thus less wear and tear and lesser electricity consumption. So linear inverters are certainly better. As for side-by-side refrigerators: as there is no data available for their electricity consumption, we were not able to rate them. It is difficult to tell you top 3. All I can say is that these are the brands that have inverter technology in their refrigerators: LG, Samsung, Hitachi, Haier, Panasonic. They have side by side models with inverter technology. And obviously linear inverter is better and is available only in LG.

      hi abhishek,

I want to buy a multi-door refrigerator, I think Samsung and Lg doesn’t come with multi-door refrigerator, So Iam thinking about to buy these models from whirlpool, so can you suggest me which model will be best for me?

      1. whirlpool FP 343D Royal Protton Multi Door Refrigerator (330 Ltr)
      2. Whirlpool FP 313D Royal Protton Multi Door Refrigerator (300 Ltr)
      3. Whirlpool FP 283D Royal Protton Multi Door Refrigerator (260 Ltr)
      4. Whirlpool FP 263D Royal Protton Multi Door Refrigerator (240 Ltr)

I want to buy from these refrigerator, please suggest me which one will be the best choice for me, which is more energy efficient, saves electricity and have good compressor?

      Thanks

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Vipin,

As three door models are not rated by BEE, we do not have any data to make a judgement. Whirlpool, in general, has good refrigerators with BEE 3 and 2 star rated models (the ones that are rated). But we do not have data on three door models to make any comment. Hitachi has Solfege Series which is a 3 door model with inverter technology compressor. But then again we do not have data on their electricity consumption.

The worst part is that manufacturers do not provide data when it is not mandated by the government.

      Hi Abhishek,
I am in a need of a Refrigerator and have finalized Samsung’s RT34K3743s8 model (321 lt) for purchase. I have gone through it’s specifications and understand its features. I couldn’t find any online reviews on it. It will be good if you can provide your insights on the above mentioned model. Will it be a good choice for me?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Shivanshu,

Samsung RT34K3743s8 is a BEE 3 star rated model with annual electricity consumption of 261 units. It is a convertible freezer model where you can convert freezer into refrigerator if needed. It has 6 different temperature settings both for freezer and fridge and if you want ice quickly then you can use a power freeze to quickly get ice. You will have to check the space requirement you have because Samsung has lesser but bigger sections in the fridge as compared to LG which has smaller but more sections. If you have bigger utensils to keep, it works fine. You can always get it altered by adding more trays but then the default setup has one section less. I personally have a similar model (one with coolwall) and it works great for me.

      • shivanshu agnihotri

Thanks for the information. I understand your refrigerator has one additional feature of “Freezer cool pack (12 hrs)” over Samsung’s RT34K3743s8. Your refrigerator model is RT34K3753S9 Top Mount Freezer with Digital Inverter 321 L? Please confirm about its performance.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I purchased it about 2-3 months back. It has been working good for us. Is there anything specific that you want to know?

      • shivanshu agnihotri

Do you have this model no. : RT34K3753S9? I need to know if its worth the money and about its performance.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Shivanshu,

I have purchased RT34K3983SL/HL. It has annual electricity consumption of 261 units per year. I purchased it a couple of months back and for last two months it is working well for me. I have had no issues with it. Although the service guy from Samsung who came to help us with the setup was not really good. But then as far as the product is concerned, I am happy with it. It’s electricity consumption is also not very high. My 7 year old refrigerator was the last inefficient thing left in my house till sometime back. And since I changed to this refrigerator, my last two months electricity bills were further reduced. We rarely use freezer and most of the time we run it on refrigerator mode. And it works great for us.

      Hi Abhishek,
I am looking for double door refrigerator with 250-290lt capacity. I need suggestion from you to buy good home refrigerator with 25k-34k range budget. I have gone thru some BEE star ratings of LG and Samsung , and found top one, 5 star rating. So my question is how efficient 5 start rating compare to 4 star rating refrigerators? Will it be worth to buy 5 star rating refrigerator OR is it OK to buy 4 star one.

      • Gr8Sam

If I may comment; I suggest that you do not look at the star rating for comparison but at the units listed below the stars. This is likely to give you an ability for fairly compare across model years, I am unsure if there are any 5 star rated 2016 frost free models across brands. In case you come across any models in frost free range that lists below 194 units I would be interested to know its model and brand.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Satish,

As per current BEE data (available on https://www.beestarlabel.com) there is no BEE 5 star rated frost free refrigerator model. So if you saw a BEE 5 star rated double door model, then it’s rating is from 2015. Because there is no BEE 5 star rated model in 2016.

To answer your question: I personally think that from payback calculation perspective (to recover the extra amount you pay for energy savings), BEE 3 star rated refrigerators work out the best in most cities (unless your electricity cost is super high). There are very few BEE 4 star rated models as per latest data and a lot of BEE 3 star rated models. You may look at any of these:

        Hitachi R-H270PND4K 3
        Hitachi R-H310PND4K 3
        LG GL-U292JSOL 4
        LG GL-D292JSFL 3
        LG GL-M302RPZL 3
        LG GL-D302JSFL 3
        LG GL-C282RMPL 3
        LG GL-C282RSPL 3
        Samsung RT30K37547E/HL 4
        Samsung RT30K3983SL/HL 3
        Samsung RT30K3983UZ/HL 3

The last value is the star rating of the model.

    • Satya Prakash

      Hi Abhishek,

I am looking for a refrigerator and decided to buy in this week on sunday. I have inquired two model LG -I322RZPL and Samsung RT34K3753S9. But I am confused which one is good. I am looking only in these two brands. Please suggest.

      • Gr8Sam

Still my thoughts… If you are willing to bump up to 308 or 310L LG I suggest you start looking at their 335L ranges. Hopefully Samsung’s door alarm is not a feature that has an appeal for you, because some of their models with double door alarms in addition to not working for freezer is unlikely to even startle the lizard on the wall near the fridge. While you dont want to wake up the whole neighbourhood the alarm should not be so feeble that you would have to put your ears in the back of the fridge to hear few weak dings. Sammy is quite becoming famous for giving features that will save you money for managing your hair. Their recent J2 phones seem to be another example, it looks like the notification led light does not light up permanently (that is until you dismiss it) but only blinks thrice or something like that. What gives!??

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I am not able to find specs for LG I322RZPL, did you mean GL-M322RZPL? If yes, then both of them are BEE 3 star rated models. Both have inverter technology compressor. Samsung model is smart convertible so you can convert freezer to fridge if you want to (good for vegetarians). Converting freezer to fridge also saves a lot of electricity. Brand wise both of them are good. LG and Samsung have different designs for storage space and you need to check both of these models in market to figure out which one suits your needs. LG has more sections but the size of sections is smaller. Samsung has lesser sections but each section is bigger. If you have bigger utensils to be placed then Samsung works better. Else LG provides more sections to store things. However, a lot of it is adjustable and you can still purchase an extra tray to create more space in the Samsung model. I was just talking about the default design.

      • Satya Prakash

        Sorry, that is GL-I322RZPL…

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I even searched on google to see if any website has information about this model. Could not find it. Sorry.

      • Gr8Sam

        Perhaps it is GL-I322RPZL

      • Satya Prakash

        Hi all,

Sorry for the Model mistake and Yes, Gr8 Sam is right. I am just looking with GL-I322RPZL and RT34K3753S9. One Thing I want to know that hot coils is covered for both.

I am just looking for the durability of the product and service. Which one is good and a long maintenance free deal.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Too close to make a distinction. Both are good brands and it is not that one stands out glaringly compared to the other.

    • Gr8Sam

Double check build quality in showrooms before buying. I am disappointed, Samsung is not what it used to be. Remember, Quality is fluid, never take a brand for granted.

    • Rajeev Nair

      Hi Abhishek
I am moving to new Apt and planning on buying a New Refrigerator . Need your help and recommendation . We are Family of 5 , Non Veg eaters and We are looking for Refrigerator with the capacity close to 500 ltrs , may be double door . I was looking for Ice dispenser as well, but didnt find in LG .
Can you help Me with your recommendation with /with out ice dispenser ?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Ranjeev,

You can look at any of these:

        Hitachi R-VG540PND3
        LG GL-T522GNSL
        LG GL-M522GNSL
        LG GL-M522GDWL
        LG GL-M542GDWL
        LG GL-M542GNSL
        Samsung RT47K6358SL/TL
        Samsung RT49K6338BS/TL
        Samsung RT49K6758S9/TL

There all have gross volume between 450 and 500 and are BEE 3 or 4 star rated. Ice dispenser is mostly seen in side-by-side models. They are quite rare in double door models. Also any kind of dispenser is an opportunity for hot air to go in and thus it reduces the energy efficiency of the refrigerator. If you are specially looking for ones with dispensers then these are some models from Samsung that are efficient and also have dispenser:

        Samsung RT47H567ESL/TL
        Samsung RT49H567ESL/TL
        Samsung RT54H667ESL/TL

      • Rajeev Nair

        Mr Nair,

I am simply curious! why consider only double doors for 500L capacity? Why not french door ones or side by side fridges? I think some of the advanced multi door models have provisions to protect the cooling in various bays while still providing you with ice dispenser.

      • Rajeev Nair

        Gr8Sam
Can you advice few which have French doors

    • Maitali

Would it be better to buy a 4 star LG Fridge which consumes 194 units per year or buy a 3 star Samsung Smart Convertible Fridge which consumes 243 units for a vegetarian family who lives in Delhi (so in winter uses freezer much less)?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Well all depends on what holds more priority for you :). Saving electricity is being more eco-friendly and doing good to the world. But if you look at it, if you are a vegetarian, you may convert your freezer to refrigerator, and then save the extra electricity that you use on freezer. Then it may almost come down to same numbers. But if you use freezer, then a BEE 4 star fridge would be better. Also if we do economics (and if that is priority to you), then the difference between the two fridge is about 50 units. Assuming that in real life use the consumption will be 50% higher (which is on a higher side), then we are talking about 75 units in a year. If your unit cost of electricity is Rs 10 a unit, then we are talking about Rs 750 spent extra in a year. The next factor that comes in is the cost difference. If you pay Rs 3500 more to buy BEE 4 star refrigerator, then you are talking about a payback (of extra Rs 3500) in about 4 years (which is reasonable considering that you will use the fridge for 8-9 years). But if your unit cost of electricity is less, then the payback period will increase. So you have to decide on what is more important to you.

      • Gr8Sam

In addition to Mr. Jain’s points please also keep convenience in mind, in addition to energy savings, because one can save a lot more without a refrigerator. From the units you mention, it seems you are looking at 253 to 284 L range. I think considering LG for any capacity less than 335 would mean that you need to be a hard working buyer (research a lot), buying LG using their web site or internet is not for the faint of heart. If buying LG then please ensure you see the same (not similar) model before buying. Convenience is also a personal thing after a certain level, for example while an easy slide out shelf is a great convenience, if the shelf position is fixed then it might not be all that convenient.

    • Anshul Johar

Dear Abhishek, Which brand and model of a side by side refrigerator would you recommend in light of good performance, storage, 4 star, 5 star energy saving ratings or with inverter technology?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Anshul,

There is no BEE star rating for side by side refrigerators. So difficult to pick out one. But Hitachi, LG, Samsung are the ones that have side by side refrigerators with inverter technology.

      • Anshul Johar

Would you suggest some models with inverter technology Abhishek?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        HI Anshul,

Currently we do not have any data for side-by-side models to make any recommendation.

    • Syed

      Hi Abhishek,
I searched the comments section to understand how good is triple door fridge from Whirlpool, but could not find any data.
I am searching for around 300 lts fridge,
how energy efficient are the whirlpool models
why has other brands not introduced triple door

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

The problem with 3 door refrigerators is that it is not rated by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). And when anything is not rated or mandated by the government, manufacturers do not provide data for it. BEE currently only rates single and double door models as they are the most sold types of refrigerators.

As far as whirlpool brand is concerned, their two door (frost free) models have a maximum BEE star rating of 3 star. Most of their models are BEE 2 star rated with a few having 3 star rating. This gives a good idea of the kind of energy efficiency their technology offers.

      • Gr8Sam

If energy efficiency are quite high in your priority then you need to research a lot before buying anything other than BEE rated models. These guys can be tricky. For the specific case of Whirlpool three door model, I believe Mr. Jain has done a rough calculation based on the input from forum user, It is not very rosy (500+ units I think), I am lazy to dig it up but you should be able to find it in this forum. Hitachi has some three door models.

    • Surya

      Hi Abhishek,

Can you tell me which is best between them
Samsung RT30K37547E/HL and LG-GL-U292JSOL, i mean Samsung Digital Display is not working or if it is faulty after some years then refrigerator not working, but LG has no such issue. am i right Abhishek, pls reply on urgent basis.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

All I can say is that both are equally energy efficient. You will have to check both of them in a store to make a final decision based on the things that you need. Brand wise both are top brands. I have not heard of faulty display problem about Samsung, so I cannot comment on that.

      • surya

i know , but still between them which one you preferred.which one you say i buy.

      • Gr8Sam

Sammy touts in their product webpages “The blue LED display adds a touch of sophistication…” now don’t get carried away, unless you agree with Sammy’s confidence in human memory, well if you can remember insignificant things like your spouse’s birthday surely you can remember few things in the control panel.

The blue LED is nothing but a position indicator, kind of like electronic equivalent of the red painted pointed edge on knob controls to let you know what is the current choice and a guide to set the new desired level. The rest of the panel which has buttons and temperature measures do not light up! Oh well if you don’t want to wrack your brain you can always bring your granny’s flashlight lens every time you want change something. How hard can the technology be to light up the whole panel for a few seconds at the touch of a button?

      • Gr8Sam

        Mr Surya,

It would be great if you tell a bit more about what your needs are, any way moderators are very unlikely to say choose this out the two, unless the other one is a very poor choice. Please read my other posts about LG and Samsung. Also when selecting recess handle refrigerators have quite a few go at opening and closing them like you would in your home (casual and rough), they should not hurt you or be inconvenient while operating. Bar handles are comparatively suspended mind (idiot) proof. As regards to your worry about the digital panel, do you observe the control panels across all the models of Samsung to be of same size and features, yup highly likely it will be available with Samsung service centers for replacement. Sure knob controls are sturdier but if have not had army training of crawling under wires, reaching for it in one of the deepest refrigerators in the segment would likely end up in protest from you back muscles.

    • Onir

      Hi Abhishek..
      Shall i go for LG-GL B221ATNN or LG-GL D221AHAI??
Or kindly suggest me something with 215 ltr..single door.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Oh! LG GL-D221AHAI is far better as it has inverter technology compressor. I would say it is top of the line model in that size range.

    • Onir

      Shall i go for LG-GL B221ATNN or LG-GL D221AHAI?

    • vasishta

There is another LG fridge model called GL-T542GNSL can you update its stats in your chat please. It comes in 495L capacity.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

This one is an old dual fridge model. Even LG has stopped showing it on their website. The data is not available on BEE database and nor on LG website. So cannot comment on it’s power consumption.

      • LG Electronics

But LG – GL T542 is a brand new model and leader of pack in energy consumption. It has a huge 495L capacity with 243 unit consumption per year.Check once again in BEE app for IOS/Android if u can’t find it in website !! Hope u update this new model in ur sheet so it will be helpful to customers.

      • Gr8Sam

Oh wow an avatar called LG Electronics, I will assume this is a fun name and not actual representation of LG Electronics :)

So my clarification request is why LG web site does not show the interior pictures of the actual model? for example gl-I302rtnl, this is 284L model that seems to have cosmetic box and convertible box as well!, pray tell me if you know this is true or should we go by ” *images are for representation only, actual product may shock you (oops replace last two words with ‘vary’)”

In case you are concerned I suggest you visit Amazon.in LG refrigerator buyers’ comments to gather how much of an issue the above has been.

Also I think LG on its end to be helpful to customers (in addition to guiding well meaning people like Abhishek) can avoid cryptic names like ‘C Shelf’, ‘R Shelf’. Particularly if one is far superior to the other, say it has a sliding mechanism.

And btw; If I was an LG representative, I would have presented the above information in a different (nicer) way. I am sure that this site would have (rightfully) used a disclaimer for accurateness of information.

      • Gr8Sam

It would also be helpful to customer if LG web site is updated, for example LG web site does not show the interior pictures of the actual model? one example is model gl-I302rtnl, this is 284L model that seems to have cosmetic box and convertible box as well!, Please let me know if that is correct also I have seen tower led pictures in lower capacity models which I think is highly unlikely.

Also I think LG on its end to be helpful to customers (in addition to guiding well meaning people like Abhishek) can avoid cryptic names like ‘Shelf C’, ‘Shelf R’. Particularly if one is far superior to the other, say it has a sliding mechanism.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Sure. Thanks for the update. Will surely check it out.

      • LG Electronics

We have the LG website link to GL-T542GDWL the latest model. Here you go @abhijain203:disqus

        Units :- 243 , Capacity :- 495L

        http://www.lg.com/in/refrigerators/lg-GL-T542GDWL

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Thanks for the Information LG Electronics. However, the link does not have annual electricity consumption in tech specs. We mostly use data from BEE website beestarlabel.com to update the details (especially for annual electricity consumption). So in our process, we first collect data from BEE website, then compare the data with manufacturers’ website and then lastly check the prices from websites like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, CompareIndia, etc. We are in process of making data updates, so the list above should be updated soon.

    • Kalyan Chakravarthy

      HI Abhishek
it is a great site with very good information , we are vegetarian family of 5 .. so I believe anything around 350 Litres is good
I am interested in Double door
What is your opinion on Panasonic / Bosch / Hitachi refrigerators . Are their technology is latest as LG or Samsung..
somehow I am more interested in buying from non-market leader brands .. but ofcourse not at the cost of quality though
My budget is 40K to 45K

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Kalyan,

Inverter technology used in LG/Samsung refrigerators is also available in Hitachi and Panasonic. However, Panasonic does not have top freezer model with inverter technology. BEE is currently only rating Top Freezer models and because of this energy consumption data for Panasonic refrigerators with inverter/bottom freezer is not available. Which makes it difficult to compare Panasonic models with others. But Hitachi does have top freezer with inverter technology.

Bosch also has one efficient model in your size range, but then again it is not inverter technology. The only model that I know of is also expensive considering your budget. However, you can look at this model from Hitachi: R-H350PND4K. In Bosch you can look at KDN43VR30I (but as I said, it is expensive).

      • Kalyan Chakravarthy

        Thanks Abhishek
NR-BW415XS is a model from Panasonic with bottom freezer , I understand that it did not have rating by BEE .. but with inverter tech & econavi would it’s power consumption be comparabale to those of LG/Samsung 3 or 4 star rated ones ..
and also please suggest few models in Samsung / LG as well .. both from looks wise and your other inputs Samsung seems to be more suitable for veggies ..

      • Kalyan Chakravarthy

And one more thing , it is practically difficult to operate the Refrigerators (non-inverter technology) on Diesel Gensets or on Inverters right . Do you recommend using Refirgerator on diesel Genset .. In our house we have a power backup from DG for 2KVA . as you know other lighting / Fans will not consume more than 750 – 1000 VA .. so an inverter / non-inverter refrigerator is recommended to operate on the remaining 1000VA..

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

It is typically recommended to go for 2-2.5 kVA backup for a non inverter tech refrigerator alone. So if you have a total of 2kVA then it may turn out difficult to run refrigerator. But inverter tech refrigerator will be super easy to run on your backup because for it even 1 kVA is much more than enough.

You can easily use your inverter tech refrigerator on DG Set.

      • Gr8Sam

Whirlpool 375 pro elt 4s (just 275 units), is a great model that if you bargain hard you might find one even well below 35K. But if you want to consider power outages then you might have to zero in on inverter tech or consider LG’s powercool range. Powercool range in double doors seems to be having a tendency to be slowly getting out of reach for budget conscious buyers. I think LG will offer this only in 335L and above in future.

      • Kalyan Chakravarthy

Thanks Sam , Yes I prefer Inverter technology due to usability with DG .. what is your opinion on NR-BW415XS from Panasonic , I am apprehensive on the durability of the Drawer type Bottom freezer ..

      • Gr8Sam

I am sorry that I am unable to help, as I do not know about the model you mention, also I did not look much farther than LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and Godrej.

Drawers vis a vis Doors would make doors pip drawers for sturdiness. But when you go with a brand that has good services in the area where you live, you should be able to get it repaired in case of issues. I personally have an opinion on drawer freezers, they typically behave like chest freezers, the biggest trouble being having it organized and easy to use. Your favorite ice cream might get sunk into the bottom after the women of the household are back from shopping. If your household has lots of NV items to store or use ice cubes frequently then bottom freezer might not be an ideal choice, but then a bottom drawer freezer is probably better solution than a bottom door freezer.

      • Kalyan Chakravarthy

Thanks Sam .. will check the practicality of bottom drawer refrigerator .. By the way we are Veggies .. and one more thing do I need to really crave about the Panasonic/Hitachi and their superior quality .. Or LG / Samsung / Whirlpool are good enough .. As I said in my first post I have a tendency to but non-market leader brands :-)

      • Gr8Sam

Since you want to use alternate power source (you said DG) then your search I think should be within inverter tech fridges so whirlpool is probably out. If you folks are veggies then a bottom drawer can be a boon, particularly if people at home don’t want to bend frequently. In fact some brands are providing eazy access provisions in the veg boxes of top freezer models, in way trying to mitigate the selling point advantage of bottom drawers.

If I may suggest, it would be best if you give more priority to convenience than quality, a refrigerator is primarily a convenience product, how? well you don’t want to keep running to you local kirana stores for your needs/wants. Sure we Indians are used to seeing our earlier generation holding on to a refrigerator for close to two decades but here is were tech can be disruptive for instance the inverter tech that came in about 2012 in refrigerators, and that is the main purpose of this website, energy savings.

In this age of (comparitive) prosperity I think looking for a refrigerator beyond 10 to 12 years period might be poor planning. Having said all the above, the impression I have is that Hitachi is a cut above the all the other brands you mention. The are pricer in both AC and fridges compared to other brands. I have a favourable opinion about Panny and quite a few of those I know consider Panny first for bottom freezer though Haier offers more variety and cost advantage. But please check the quality of the model that you are considering rather than a brand, I learnt this lesson the hard way ;(

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Kalyan,

Based on my understanding, Panasonic Inverter with econavi should be quite energy efficient. But unfortunately we do not have numbers to substantiate that understanding.

You can look at these from LG/Samsung:

        LG GL-D402JPZL
        LG GL-P402JNSL
        LG GL-D402HDWL
        LG GL-D402HNSL
        LG GL-D402JHSL
        LG GL-P402JDWL
        Samsung RT39K5518S8/TL
        Samsung RT39K5538S9/TL

The good thing about Samsung 5 in 1 models is that it has separate evaporator for freezer and refrigerator. You can completely switch off freezer or refrigerator when you are not using it. Or you can converter freezer into refrigerator. All these modes let you save a whole lot of electricity on top of the benefits that you get from inverter technology.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

You may also look at Whirlpool PRO 375 ELITE 4S ALPHA STEEL(I) …. again it is not an inverter technology refrigerator, but an efficient one, and non LG/Sasmung.

    • Calvin Dsouza

      Hi abhishek,
I hav narrowed down on these 2 refrigerators and im unsure which to pick could u please suggest one.
      Samsung RT30K37547E/HL and LG-GL-U292JSOL

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Both are quite close. Energy efficiency wise both are same. If you are a vegetarian then Samsung’s smart convertible will be of benefit, else there is no specific benefit of smart convertible. It would be better if you go to the store and check the storage arrangement in both. LG in general gives more sections while Samsung has lesser but bigger sections. Material wise I found Samsung to be slightly more sturdier (and that is why I personally purchased samsung). But the biggest thing would be to analyze what you want to store and if the space/sections provided work for you or not.

      • Gr8Sam

        Mr Jain,

If I might also add to enlighten our friends here. Samsung’s convertible is not necessarily its convertible 5-in-1!. The five in ones are available only in their 345L plus models. Also with Samsung the shelves pattern is the same from most of 253L models to 345L models, whereas once you go for 335 LG models you start getting additional features like cosmetic box, tower led, convertible box, electronic child lock etc Though some are available in smaller capacity models they are not available in combination with other features.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Thanks for sharing. This information is absolutely correct. I myself have a Samsung Convertible, but it is a 321 lts model and it is not 5 in 1.

      • Gr8Sam

Thank goodness you bought the previous years model. The second veg box is a far better option than CoolWall! This is one of the biggest me to hoaxes around. LG introduced Durachill and then uped the ante with Powercool. So Sammy which is more keen on display mkt (TVs and phones) came up with cool wall, this looks nothing except the freezer cool pack that is pasted horizontally on the wall. I read/glanced a patents brief about coolwall obviously it is probably more than the over simplification I mentioned above, still I think it will not hold a candle to LG’s Powercool which is for the whole refrigerator and has systems which releases coolant on thermo-siphon method. The Coolwall probably works for only one shelf!

    • kareem

      hi abhishek,
we are 6 people in our family in hyderabad.
I want to buy a 400 or more, liter refrigerator which can save energy and is tough.
Mostly the servants manage the fridge so it must be strong.
so please suggest me 1 lg product, and whrilpool..

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

It is always better to go for a refrigerator that is BEE 3 star rated and above. Both the models in whirlpool are BEE 2 star. But LG certainly had BEE 3 star and above models. You can look at these:

Brand Model Volume Star Rating Price
        LG GL-T522GNSL 470 4 63990
        LG GL-M542GNSL 495 3 55500
        LG GL-M542GDWL 495 3 60000
        LG GL-M522GNSL 470 3 53699
        LG GL-M522GDWL 470 3 54999
        LG GL-M472QPZL 420 3 47499
        LG GL-M472GNSL 420 3 56000
        LG GL-M472GDWL 420 3 51899
        LG GL-M442TKRL 407 3 53390
        LG GL-I472QPZM 420 3 53690

    • Ravi

      Hi Abhishek,
We are 5 people in our family in Mumbai.
I want to buy a 400 or more, liter refrigerator which can save energy and is tough.
Mostly the servants manage the fridge so it must be strong.
      Please suggest

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Ravi,

Cannot comment on sturdiness, but you can look at these models:

        LG GL-M472GNSL
        LG GL-M472QPZL
        LG GL-M472GDWL
        LG GL-I472QPZM
        LG GL-M442TKRL
        Samsung RT42K5468SL/TL

      • Gr8Sam

It is difficult to comment on sturdiness in general fashion. For example Godrej doors looks solid but their door bins are nothing to write about. If servants are gonna manage the fridge the most then my suggestion would be to aim for cheapest ones and buy a new one if the current one conks out. One feature that would be great to have with servants handling them would be the door alarm. But watch out, Sammy is known to give alarm in some models for the fridge section but skip it for freezer section (ahem and not mention it anywhere).

    • Santhosh M V

      Hi Abhishek,
Which models do you suggest for 230-265 litre capacity, Single door; energy rating 4 & above; in Samsung and Godrej.
Also, pls mention if it has inverter technology.
Having an inverter technology increases by prices by what percentage; generally?
Most of the posts having models in LG, Samsung and Whirlpool.
      How is Godrej comparitively?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Santhosh,

In Single Door Samsung and LG are the only brands that have inverter technology compressor. Samsung models (with inverter tech) are smaller 192 lts and 212 lts. LG has single door model with inverter tech in 235 lts. And it’s MRP is just Rs 1000 more than the refrigerator without inverter technology. Godrej does not have inverter tech in Single Door models.

Also you will find many more models with inverter technology in this size range if you go for a double door models. Frost Free model with inverter technology of BEE 3 star rating would be as much or more efficient than BEE 5 star rated model from Single Door models. The price would be 2-3 K more than single door models.

Godrej is good brand from India but LG, Samsung and Whirlpool have better technologies. By the way I could not find BEE 4 star and up models from Godrej in single door with star rating 4 and above, but here are a few models from Samsung:

        RR23J2415SA/TL
        RR23J2725RY/TL
        RR23J2835RX/TL
        RR23J2835PX/TL
        RR23J2835RZ/TL
        RR23J2835SZ/TL
        RR23J2835UZ/TL

      • Santhosh M V

        Thanks for the reply Abhishek.
I had requested for information on Single door, as power saving is of around 30-40% (compared to double door) as per previous posts.
As you mentioned, if Frost Free model with inverter technology of BEE 3 star rating would be as much or more efficient than BEE 5 star rated model from Single Door models, and a price difference of 2-3K; guess, a double door can also be considered (Only drawback being powercuts will make it lose the temp. faster than single door).
Therefore can you suggest few models in Frost free (double door), in LG and Samsung, (BEE 3 star & above); with Inverter technology, capacity between 230 and 300 litres.
Also can you also comment on the life and performance of these inverter technology motors, compared to the earlier fixed speed motors; and whether is it as much trouble free and fixed speed motors?
        Thanks,
        Santhosh

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Santhosh,

Samsung models are a bit pricey. You can look at these models from LG on Amazon:

        LG GL-M292RPZL http://amzn.to/28RzXZz
        LG GL-I292RPZL http://amzn.to/28PvG5V
        LG GL-Q282SPZL http://amzn.to/28RDtm7
        LG GL-A282SPZL http://amzn.to/28QHRmG
        Samsung RT28K3043S8/HL http://amzn.to/28REASP
        Samsung RT27JARMABX http://amzn.to/28PpgCf

These models are less than 25K. And all have 10 years warranty on the compressor. Some of LG and Samsung models have cool pack which can keep the refrigerator cool for 8-10 hours during power cuts. The inverter tech compressors work quite well with power inverter as well making it easy to run refrigerator with smaller power inverter.

      • Santhosh M V

        Hi Abhishek,
Can you please give your feedback on the following two models:
        LG GL-B292SMPM
        LG GL-Q292STNM
Which one amongst the two is worth for money?
        Thanks
        Santhosh

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

LG GL-Q292STNM is a BEE 3 star rated refrigerator while LG GL-B292SMPM is a BEE 2 star rated refrigerator. From an electricity consumption point of view LG GL-Q292STNM is much better. This model also has 4 way cooling which is good. So I think you should go for LG GL-Q292STNM.

      • Gr8Sam

If power outages are a great concern for you and if you are not planning on running the fridge using alternate power sources (inverter for eg) then may be this one might interest you – LG gl-p302jsfl. It has powercool tech and is the starting capacity (284L) with this feature based on LG website. Godrej would be good if you are considering bigger capacity (300L +) and are on the look out for bargain. Godrej also has good power rating models these days even in frost free models, in particular is their single door Digi Edge. In fact I believe this is one model that might please most of the shoppers looking for single door model without brand cachet peeves.

      hello abhishek,
      .

Anything between 300 – 350 would be ok. its the first time we are buying a refrigerator so plz cld u help us with options of some good models to choose from and its prices. we constantly need a freezer so not necessarily looking at an invertible technology. something which cld fit in our budget and also help electricity wise. plz help at the earliest. thanks

        Hi Vidhi,

        What is your budget?

    • dipti

      hello abhishek
i need to buy a refrigerator for family of 4 adults.
i prefer to buy a fridge with invertor, double door, near to 300ltr, ratio of 80:20, with highest star rating.

also i m confused with LG n Samsung s terms i.e. smart compression and digital compression. is this two are inverter technology in layman’s language???

plz give me two or three suggestions only if possible.

      thanks

    • Manek

Hello and Good Morning to BB team and Abhishekh,

After going through BB’s recommendations I have shortlisted the Samsung Smart Convertible series with Digital Inverter Compressor as most suitable to my requirements. We’re a small family so we don’t need much storage space so the smallest possible 275 ltr model seems enough.

Generally, I prefer to go for the best rated version, however, for this model it is pretty difficult to find in Delhi (the 3 star one and the bigger 321 ltr 4 star is more popular) and the few stores which could get it for me told me it’d be around 33k-35k. It seems to be going for 29-32k on Flipkart and Amazon (the 321 ltr 4 star one, the 275 ltr 4 star one is not available in my pincode on either Flipkart or Amazon). While the 3 star 253 ltr and 275 ltr versions go for around 25k-27k and are easily available both online and offline.

By the chart the 3 star version consumes only approx. 50 units per year more than 4 star version so if we use it for 5 years before reselling/giving away and upgrading isn’t the 3 star version more value for money in the end? Below you have stated that the actual consumption is 30% greater than advertised, does this equally apply to all star versions? Or will the 4 star version be even more efficient than a gap of 50 units by the 3 star, I’m not sure.

Should I pay the extra 4-5k for the 4 star? Is it worth it?

      Please advise.

      • Manek

To clarify, the 4 and 3 star ratings I mentioned are according to the new 2016 BEE standards, they were originally 5 and 4 star just last year of course.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

30% rule applies for all models.

A lot depends on tariff. If two models have a difference of 50 units, on the overall the difference will be max about 80 units. At Rs 10 a unit also the difference would be Rs 800 per year. You can decide accordingly.

can u please suggest me which to buy single door or double door.
i wish to switch off the refrigerator while am away ..they say that we shouldnt switch off refrigerator.
      so please guide

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

You should go for a single door refrigerator of 180-200 lts range. That should be good enough for you. Also as your usage is only for 2 months, BEE star rating would not matter much. You can go for any model from LG, Samsung or Whirlpool.

      • Suneetha

Thanks a ton…but will the refrigerator have issues if switched off for long periods of time

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        No that should not happen.

hi Abhishek ji, for space and power saving.. if freezer in refrigerator disconnected/removed, how the refrigerator work

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

You need to check how you can disconnect the two evaporators. I have not done or seen any such experiment, so I cannot comment.

    • abhishek

Hi abhishek, I want to purchase this model as it has door in door function
http://www.lg.com/in/refrigerators/lg-GC-D432HLAM but its star is 2 only

next option I have is to go for this one
http://www.lg.com/in/refrigerators/lg-GL-M472GNSL as it has three star rating

but if I go for first one how much difference on a average would be there in units because of the star rating.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

The difference in electricity consumption of the two refrigerators is about 90 units per year as per BEE data. In actual usage it would be about 30% more.

    • Anubhab Roy

Hi Abhishek, I am looking at Samsung’s 345 L RT39K5538S9/TL. It seems to be a bit expensive and I can’t find any reviews online. Could you advise regarding this particular model? In a similar size capacity and 4/5 star rating are there any other models that you might suggest? Thanks.

      • Anubhab Roy

        Sorry, I meant Samsung RT36JDRZFSL.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

This is a Samsung SMART Convertible model of 345 lts with BEE 5 star rating from 2015 …. so it will be BEE 4 star rated model as per 2016 standards. Smart Convertible is a great series from Samsung if you are a vegetarian. This model also has cool pack which will keep the refrigerator cool for 9 hours during power cuts. In fact you can save more electricity if you turn your freezer to refrigerator. I think this is a good model and you can go ahead with it.

      • Anubhab Roy

Thanks Abhishek! The clarification regarding the smart convertible feature was useful. I went to the store and checked out 2 models that I liked – LG GL U402JPZL and Whirlpool PRO 375 ELT 4S. Any recommendation between these 2? The list on this page has LG GL-D402JPZL. How are the U and D models different? Also the rating appears a bit confusing – is the 2016 rating the ones being displayed or is it 2015?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Anubhab,

Every star label has the year of rating mentioned on it. So when you are in store and checking the model, do check the year mentioned on the label. It will be 2015 for old models and 2016 for newer models.

By the way LG and Samsung have inverter technology compressor which is quite effective in maintaining precise temperature in the refrigerator thus keeping vegetables quite fresh. Whirlpool does not have inverter technology compressor, but then they have 6th sense technology that they claim to maintain the right temperature in the refrigerator. I personally feel that inverter technology is a great technology and one should only go for a model with inverter technology.

Currently, I do not have data for he U model. I would suggest that you note the energy consumption of D model from here and then compare that to the number (of yearly units consumption) mentioned on the U model in store.

      • Anubhab Roy

        Thanks Abhishek.

      • Gr8Sam

        Mr Jain,

Are you sure Samsung models keep the whole refrigerator cool for x hours? I am not sure if cool pack in the freezer can help the refrigerator section. I was of the thought only LG and Bosch (I have not read the details of Bosch’s technology) has the technology to keep the whole refrigerator cool during power outages. Samsung I think have not claimed anywhere that they have whole fridge cooling, though in their Coolwall briefs they mention it as an exciting technology that gives cooling for 12 hours, I don’t think they have mentioned if it is for the whole fridge, for example how effective it is for the fairly air tight veg box? Giving a feature that works only partially effective is on the verge of being a hoax, for example what is the point in having a lock if it can simply be pulled open (not even picked)! of course you are on the legally safe zone if your ad has never mentioned that it would lock securely.

One reasoning I can attempt though it can fall flat; Sammy charges 1000 rupees extra for CoolWall and are inclined to plastering it across all models above 275L while LG charges at least 2,500 plus for their Evercool and are increasingly having less inclination to give this technology in frost free fridges that cost less than 40K mrp.

Please let us know if there are any models or information about whole refrigerator cooling (during power outages) by Samsung.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Check the specs of this model: http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/refrigerators/top-mount-freezer/RT34K3983SL/HL

Cool Wall is for refrigerator section and cool pack is for freezer section.

      • Gr8Sam

I know, I just was’nt able to gather if that is what you meant in the earlier post since you had referred ‘refrigerator’ generically. Still the moot point is there seem to be no specific claim by Sammy as to Coolwall tech’ providing uniform cooling to the entire refrigerator section. Also I think cool pack works only for that shelf in which you have cool pack not for the entire freezer, if it was to be for the entire freezer why give it as a shelf it could have simply been pasted on the ceiling of the freezer. Any thoughts?

Hi Abhishek, i am planning to buy single door fridge of 197Ltr so which company is best for me in past 20 years i was using Godrej but now people says its not good so which one is best for me.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

You can look at LG, Samsung or Whirlpool. These are good companies in that size range. You can go for their BEE 5 star rated models.

    • arzav

Hello abhishek….i want to buy a fridge about 300 l…..but i am fully confused what to buy single door or double Door bcoz i have a fridge double door of whirlpool e285…but from last 2 years it dont make any ice…so i want to know if there is any differnce between ice technolgy in single door and double door….what will be the best option if money doesn’t matters….here in my city light power is for abt 15 hrs only…and suggest me the best model….and also tell me that if it is possible to run fridge on my normal home inverter??

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Arzav,

The maximum volume available in single door is 266 lts. If you need 300 lts then you will have to go for a double door refrigerator only. As far as technology for making ice is concerned, it is pretty standard. Air Conditioners use the same technology, refrigerators use the same technology, freezer section of refrigerator also use the same technology. You have a condenser, an evaporator and a compressor along with a refrigerant that cools the area. Possible issues can be gas leaks or insufficient air flow near the condenser (if you keep it in a tight spot in a room where there is no air flow). But otherwise it should make ice.

The only difference between single door and double door is defrosting. In single door ice will get accumlated around the freezer which you have to remove manually periodically. But in double door, there is a heating element that does not let ice accumlate around the freezer. But regular ice formation in the ice cube tray is normal.

If you go for inverter technology refrigerator, your fridge will run normaly on your home inverter. You can look at these models:

        Hitachi R-H350PND4K
        LG GL-U322JSOL
        LG GL-M322RPZL
        LG GL-D322JSFL
        LG GL-D372JPZL
        LG GL-P372JNSL
        LG GL-D372JHSL
        LG GL-D372HNSL
        LG GL-P372JDWL
        LG GL-D372HDWL
        Samsung RT34K3743S8/HL
        Samsung RT34K3753S9/HL

    • Ujjwal Varma

      Hello Abhishek,
Is there any chance that 5 star rated double door, frost free refrigerators will be launching soon? Or are they already launched but yet to be made available in India? Are eutectic freezers for home use available? Thanks

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Ujjwal,

There are several factors that drive the whole economics of star ratings. Refrigerators have become efficient over time thanks to efforts by BEE. But then there is a limit to which they can get efficient (limits in technology), also there is also cost of electricity that plays a role.

BEE improved the efficiency levels last year and again this year. If you really look at the levels, you will find that the number of units that you save between BEE 4 and 3 star ratings (of the current year) and apply cost of electricity to it, you will find that BEE 3 star rated refrigerator makes more economic sense at current cost of electricity.

So more BEE 3 star rated refrigerators will sell. But then BEE has improved star rating again this year. Manufacturers can come out with BEE 5 star rated model, but then if the difference in electricity savings does not justify the overall cost savings, people will not buy BEE 5 star rated products. And that is why manufacturers themselves do not come up with new models.

As cost of electricity rises, you will see more efforts in bringing in efficiency. But at current costs, the current status makes a lot of sense.

        Hi Vasishta,

You can look at BEE 4 star rated (as per 2016 ratings) LG GL-T522GNSL or any of these BEE 3 star rated models from Samsung:

        Hi AA,

LG GL-T522GNSL is the only BEE 4 star rated model (as per 2016 ratings) in that size range. Most others are BEE 3 star rated. Here are some BEE 3 star rated models:

    • Ujjwal Varma

Dear Abhishek, can you guide me about Samsung RT47H567ESL & LG GL-T522GNSL? Both have similar capacities & rated 4 star as per 2016 standards. Are you aware of their yearly unit consumption? Samsung additionally provides water dispenser (Is this a good feature to have, maintenance, efficiency wise?) & is cheaper than LG. What would be your suggestion? Thanks

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Ujjwal,

LG GL-T522GNSL consumes 236 units per year.

Samsung RT47H567ESL does not show up on BEE’s latest list on https://www.beestarlabel.com …. so I guess it will be BEE 4 star rated as per 2015 standards (just check the label).

Water Dispenser is not a good feature from energy efficiency perspective. However as a brand I personally like Samsung more for its build quality. LG certainly has more energy efficient models.

    • KUNAL CAHTTERJEE

Thinking about LG 258 L GL-I292STNL, which is a 4 star rated product. May I get some guidance regarding the product like, model launching year, annual consumption, model listed in BEE star rating or not, latest model of the same breed, etc. along with a overall view ? I also want to know that, though SHOPCLUES.COM (&, AMAZON, FLIP-CART, SNAP-DEAL etc also) is selling the said product at a discounted rate along with manufacturers warranty, LG customer care is denying their authority – So, if I go with any of them shall I’ve to go without warranty ? Thanks in advance for a quick reply.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Firstly I would say, do not buy a product if you do not get a warranty. It is better to buy offline and get a warranty, than buy online without warranty. I am not able to find this model on BEE’s latest list (on https://www.beestarlabel.com ) …. so I am not sure about the model year. I would suggest that you check the BEE label for this model in the store. Every BEE label has the make year and year of star rating.

Abhishek Lg Gl-D201ahai what the consuption of this refrigerator it 190 ltr 18500. It with smart inverter compressor

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

This one does have smart inverter compressor. This model still does not appear on BEE’s list ( https://www.beestarlabel.com ), so I cannot confirm on it’s energy consumption.

Inverter comoressor work in slow speed after 1 time cool then it speed change to slow. it cunsume less power like when we ride on car at 40 speed it gives us extra milage or when we take 100 speed it takes extra. same thats works. That also work on home inverter and cusume 70% less electicity then normal refrigrator.

        LG GL-M292RPZL
        LG GL-A282SPZL

        These are also energy efficient.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Vivek,

I have generally seen bottom freezer models to be narrower. But then extremely hard to find a model about 470 lts that can fit in that size. You may look at these that are 450-465 lts:

        Hitachi R-WB480PND2
        Panasonic NR-BW465XS

        Bigger size models are wider.

Hi I don’t know but if hot coils touch and cover with back side of the refrigerator then after 10 years or more refrigerator material not gone good cooling retention it consume much electricity its heat touch with cooling panel and refrigerator if leaks it not cool properly because of touch of heat. Cover coils not good for end use of refrigerator that’s why lg And whirlpool not use it. If when style matter cover coil is good. Without cover heat coils refrigerator is better. So don’t buy cover coils refrigrator Abhishek am I right?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Yes that is right. It is better for heat exchange for coils to be open.

      • neeshu

One question abhishek I found that 3 star rafrigrator cool fast but and consume 281 unit per annual and Samsung 190 unit per annual inverter .281 unit whirlpool makes ice fast at 1no 3 kg ice in 12 hours and when we talk Samsung it takes 19 hour is that right at no 1 I think if we want ice four star or 3 star better but 5 star compressor low in cooling. whirlpool take 216 unit annual but Samsung take 198 unit annual but cooling difrence. Is that very low consumption 197 unit or 251 unit consumption but fast cooling both are non inverter who is better And Samsung give compressor warranty not inverter operator kit warrant if it damage after 1 year you have to change it yr saving go to comp’s pocket. Lg whirlpool is better.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Samsung and LG have options for fast cooling and fast ice generation. So I do not think that is a problem with Samsung and LG. And I do not think samsung or lg cool less. They are quite good. You have to use it to believe in Inverter Technology … believe me that is the best technology in market which cools well and is energy efficient too.

Aur 5 star ke rate sabhi comp ke itne jyada hai ki agar app bijli saving karte hai to us saving ka kafi hissa phele company hi le jate hai. Energy bache apne, rupaye gae comp ke pass. Lg ka product satisfaction deta hai. But energy save Kare aur jabb me pyase na tik rahe ho to kisi jaruratmand ka kharcha uthae. Bekar me badhe product mat kharide. Shonk kam Kre.

Manner inverter hi test kia BT mane paya ki ice jamne me whirlpool ka jawab nahi but Samsung inverter ice me kam hai. Iska base se jyada upar ka hissa thanda hua is wajah se ice shore jamte hai. Whirlpool ka base jyada thanda hora hai agar aap 0 par bhi rakho to ice chote frd me bhi har roj kafi ice jamte hai. Agar koi inverter par chalane keep lia Lena chahta hai to sahi hai. Cooling am je mukable double time late hai. Agar aapke earth ki wire nahi hai to current atta hai. 212 liter Samsung inverter model chech kia. Aur lg ke air whirlpool keep mukable Samsung ka plastic kafi majboot lagta hai kafi acha hai. Lg me side door ka plastic jaha par bottle rakhte hai itna mjbut nahi hai. Shayad lg ka kaisa ho inverter walla apna exp share kare. Aur compressor ki warranty hai 10 years ki but inverter par chalane wale kit ki 1 year agar kharab ho gaye to Samsung se jyada pause dear kharido

Baht sari musibto keep baad manne paya ki whirlpool aur lg kush badhia lage halaki design keep mamle me Samsung ka koi jawab nahi bt whirlpool ka cooking retension wakehi badhia hai. 12 hours wao. Lg ke kai model 7 koi 12 koi 9 hours mention hai kaio par kush mention nahi hai. But pass se dekhne par sabhi ke motae ek jaise hai. Kya whirlpool ke mukable lg ki motae jayada hone par iska cooling reten as ion jyada hai. Haier ka bhi lg ke barabar hai.?

    • Deepak B J

      Hi Team,

Could you please advise whether LG GL-I292RPZL is a good model, I see its 4star rated with Power consumption showing at 194
      Thanks
      Deepak

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

LG as a brand is quite good for refrigerators. Their models are always amongst the most energy efficient models. And they use inverter technology compressor for their refrigerators, which works really well to keep food fresh for longer time. At 194 units annual consumption, this model would be the most efficient model out there. You can certainly go for it.

      • neeshu

I think this type of compressor run at slow speed to achive that rate 194 unit is that in low cooling?take high time for ice? Or same?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

It should not have low cooling. It should work the same.

      • neeshu

Thanks abhi means lg compressor is so much high in technology

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Not just LG … Samsung, Godrej, Hitachi, Haier all have inverter technology these days which is much better.

    • Amiya Tripathy

      Dear ABHISHEK

I want to buy a 300-400 TLR refrigerator ASAP. I have seen lg and Samsung both but unable to decide. Lg rep claims that convertible refrigerator is available in their range but your comment says otherwise please clarify .

Secondly one is smart inverter compressor and other is digital inverter compressor, which is better.

Thirdly which brand would you recommend based on performance, after sales support.

Lastly models that are recommended by you. Need the same ASAP as I am due to go back soon from leave and same required for old parents.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Amiya,

My bad that I made such statement. I need to correct it as I myself was in stores yesterday checking out for various models of refrigerators, and I did find Convertible refrigerator in LG over there. So yes, LG does have convertible refrigerators. But Samsung has a lot many models.

While comparing LG and Samsung, I found that Samsung has lesser number of shelves (and more space between each shelf) as compared to LG. That gives a lot of space for air to move around, but then if you keep a lot of things in the refrigerator, then if you go for samsung, then you will have to stack them up one over another. While LG has more shelves, but less shelf space in between. The drawback for the same is that you cannot keep big vessels inside the refrigerator.

Another thing that I observed was that the vegetable drawer in LG was transparent and of less durable material than Samsung. I found Samsung to have better vegetable drawer, but then less number of shelves.

Samsung models are wider (about 2 cm), while LG models are narrower but taller. So if space is a constraint then LG would be better.

As for smart inverter compressor and digital inverter compressor, both are the same. No difference between the two.

Both are quite similar brands, so hard to say which is better. My personal liking is for Samsung, but then LG has more efficient options and better shelf organization as per my needs. So I actually ended up buying LG (even though I like Samsung as a brand based on my experience with some other electronics from Samsung). But then after sales support varies from place to place. So your local dealers would be able to comment better.

You can look at these models:

        LG GL-U322JSOL
        LG GL-M322RPZL
        LG GL-D322JSFL
        LG GL-D372JPZL

That is cool you got a 321L Samsung and another frost free LG :)

    • TunaFish

      Hi Abhishek,

Can we really trust the Annual Consumption figures provided by manufacturers? I bought a 5 star 280L LG fridge recently which is rated at 193 units of consumption per year. I plugged the fridge into a power meter for 2 weeks and the readings are pretty consistent at about 1 unit a day. 14.1 units were consumed in 14 days. This means 365 units will be consumed in a year is almost double the rated figure of 193 units. I have also ensured that the cooling knob is set to minimum so as to draw the least current possible. Then why is there such a huge discrepancy?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

The numbers on BEE label are in ideal test conditions. We have observed that in regular usage it can be 30% more. If you do not use the refrigerator properly (i.e. keep it in an air tight location, stuff it with a lot of things, keep opening the door frequently), it can go even higher. We have tested some of those situations and have observed the numbers even close to double the mentioned amount. If the amount is double, the first thing that you need to do is start making sure that you use it efficiently. Give 6 inch space around the refrigerator for proper passage of hot air. Also do check out some of the tips on this link: http://www.bijlibachao.com/refrigerators/use-refrigerator-efficiently-to-save-electricity.html

    • shekhar

Sir, i to buy a new fridge for a family of 4, must be electricity effiecient, economically cheap, value for money, doses not require frequent after sales service, invertor technology, bee star rating, usage paatern for vegetarians. Sizing ranging upto 270 l,please provide with your valuable feedback

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Shekhar,

Any model with BEE 3 star rating as per 2016 standards is good value for money. The models with higher star rating can save electricity, but the payback will be really long. But BEE 3 star is good. But before buying, please make sure that on the label, the year is 2016-2018. Many manufacturers have old models in market that have 2014-2015 labels. If you get a model with 2014-2015 label, then you should go for BEE 4 star rating (as per old rating). Here are some models from LG that have inverter technology and are BEE 3 star rated as per current ratings:

        LG GL-D292JSFL
        LG GL-M292RPZL
        LG GL-A282SPZL
        LG GL-C282RMPL
        LG GL-C282RSPL

some of them would cost about 21-22K.

        Hello Mr Surendra,

This model is there on the LG website but it is not there in BEE’s latest list of star rated refrigerators. The latest LG model with BEE 4 star rating would be LG GL-D372JPZZ or LG GL-U372JHSL.

I wanted to know which brand and model to prefer if I am looking at a side by side refrigerator within 90K?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Try looking for Panasonic or Hitachi.

    • Santhosh

Hi, I am planning to buy Samsung RT27JARMAVL model but as per the label I see it is only 2 star rated and 303* units consumed, is it good choice to buy ?, or please can you suggest other models under 25k

      • Sudipta Das

Samsung RT27JARMAVL is old model. If you want to stick with Samsung go for RT28K3083S9. Its 3 star rated & consumption is 243 units. It has cool wall technology and space management is good. capasity is 251l. But the best option will be LG GL-I292RPZL. Its 4 star rated and consumption is 194 units. Capacity is 260 L. Space management is also very good. Both will cost around Rs 23000.

        Or

Samsung RT28K3953PZ :- Smart Convertible, 3 star 248 u / Year consumption, 253L Top Mount, Can maintain temp below 0* for 12 Hrs during power cuts. Launched on April 2016.

        LG GL-C282RMPL :- 4 start 240 u / yr consuption, 255L Top Mount. Launched on April 2015.

If you are veterinarian Opt for Samsung as convertible will be handy. Otherwise go for LG. Both will cost you around Rs 25000.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Santosh,

I would suggest going for a model with BEE 3 or 4 star rating. You can look at these models:

        LG GL-A282SPZL
        LG GL-M292RPZL

    • Archana Arun

Amazed by your website.I’m planning to buy single door LG or samsung refrigerator of 240-270L capacity with inverter technology. Please suggest me the best model available in the market. We currently live in chennai

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Archana,

You can get inverter technology in LG single door fridge, but the size of the refrigerator will be less than 240 L (Two models available are in 235 lts). If you want inverter technology in 240-270 L then you will have to go for double door refrigerator. Will that work?

      • Archana Arun

        ya..thanks for the reply :)

    • neeshu

Sir I want to know is like haier recovred with sheet backside is it affect on Colling or cover effect on refrigerator material. Or normal is better.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Well covering the condenser coils will have an impact on electricity consumption as it will not have lot of space to loose heat. But then you should look at the BEE rating and annual electricity consumption of the refrigerator to make a judgement, because there are several factors that contribute to efficiency of a refrigerator.

    • GMB

Hi Mod and Bijlibachao team, this is a very good initiative, thank you. I need advice on purchase of a below 300 ltr refrigerator. I am eyeing on the Bosch model KDN30VR30I. Will it perform below inverter series of Samsung and LG?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

This Bosch model is BEE 3 star rated which is good. But this does not have inverter technology compressor. Not all models from Inverter series from LG and Samsung would be BEE 4 or 5 star rated. In fact as per current ratings, there are hardly any BEE 5 star rated models.

Bosch, in general, has very good technology. Their only challenge is that not all of their models compare well with the latest top efficient models. But this specific model is efficient.

    • Surendra

Suggest a good fridge up to 25 to 35 K with Double door and 4 or 5 Start rating.

HI I m neeshu Mara apna exp hai mere pass 3 star 200 power cool whirlpool hai. Mane notice kia. 281 unit annual hai. Agar hum is ko 1 number ya lowest setting par use karte hai to ak bar me 3 min chalta hai or 7 min band rahta hai. Aur summer main aur is main 10-12 ganto main ice jam hate hai jyada uchha ice jar ho to 14 gante lagte hai. Din me 7 gante 20 min tak chalta hai . 432 min daily 12960 min 30 days 777600 sec after 30000 sec it uses 1 unit and 25.92 unit in 30 days 6 rs per unit 25.92 unit 156 bee star rating based on minimum refregrator setting based. If u use no 2 setting then it uses double power if 3 then it uses thripel power. Is keep saith app agar minimum setting par use karate hai ek to minimum power use hogi aur junk lagne ki gate but kam hogi. Compressor jaldi kharab nahi hoga. Overcooling see bache. Mane kai refrigerator dak he Jo 1 ya 2 no par hi cha late hair aur 27 year me ek bar this hi kharabi ayye. Aur a chal raha hai. a

      • neeshu

Is ke hisab se agar maa 5 star use karta bee 185 unit annual batata hai haier ka to yeh mujhe 35 per extra saving deta MATLAB minimum setting pe month main 35 percent less consumption. Minimum per use karo to inverter compressor keep bhi jarurat nahi. Agar jayada Colling use karna hai jase 1.50 ya 2 no se agge to inverter model aur bhi bachat dega. Jab app bhar jayege, door jyada nahi kholege, ek bar barf water cooler me dal kar fridge kam kholna, kam Saman ho to freezer me rakh kar night me band kar dena, subah on kar dena. Inverter model pe minimum setting hi rakhna ase appka refrigerator apko minimum setting me KFI bachat due salta hai like 50 present . kai log bekar me extra Colling set karate hai. Bina use karne par band kare binjli bachao. Jaldi ice jamane pe compresser kind life kan hote hai. 35 present of compressor quality or 15 to 30 per depent on your usage tks.

      Hi Abhishek,

Good to see this blog, seeing people more aware & you are helping in this.
I want to know few things.

      1. Is this website bijlibachao.com updates regularly & does it contains all the latest models of refrigerators rated???
      2. I want to purchase a inverter technology double door “convertable” refrigerator of 270-290 litres capacity. Please suggest me “top 4 models” (“may-2016”) latest 4 or 5 star rated models.
      3. Please tell me which series of lg and samsung refrigerators are new and best. I am confused which model is new and which is old.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Pranav,

        Here is my response:

        1) We make sure to update every 2 months. In season we try to do it bit more frequently.

        2) “Convertible” refrigerators are available only in Samsung. It is not there in any other brand. And all Samsung convertible models of 270-290 lts have same BEE rating. You can go for anyone of them.

        3) I would suggest that you check samsung website for the latest Smart Convertible models. The models on their website are the latest ones that they are selling.

      • Garde Prasad

        Hi Sir,
I want to buy a refrigerator, looking copacity 190-200ltr. I selected 1) whirlpool 215 imfresh prm 5s 200ltr 2) Godrej 195 ltr RD Edgezx cts 5.2 both are having 5* rating and cost 13500 at flipcart shopping. Which one is better ? and flipcarts refrigerator products are reliable?

      • neeshu

App new Samsung inverter single door 5 star aa raha hai 14000 rs me 195 ltr. Aap use check kare. Abhi kuch shop me aaya hi hai. Sabhe new model abhi aa rahe hai.

      • neeshu

Jo godrej wala app khe rahe hai WO 4 star hai . par Samsung ki inverter wale 14400 wala model 197 ya isse kam unit 5 star rated hai Jo ki godrej model se 60 unit kam kharach karta hai.

      • Amiya Tripathy

What about dual fridge from LG. Isn’t it also a convertible fridge

    • Rakesh Naik

Hi am planning to buy double door fridge confused between samsung RT28K3083SP 251 Litre and LG GL_A282SPZL 255 litre both are having inverter technology. Which one will be better for power consumption and performance.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

LG GL-A282SPZL is rated to consume 240 units a year and Samsung RT28K3083SP is rated to consume 243 units a year. So there is not much difference.

      • Rakesh Naik

Thanks abhishek for your quick response…can you suggest which one will be better reliable brand from LG and Samsung on quality and services.

      • Amit

        Hi Rakesh,
I recently checked the LG GL_A282SPZL 255 at Croma mall in Pune. Its rating has been upgraded to 4 stars 2016 and has 198 units power consumption. So i think its a better option.

      • Rakesh Naik

Thanks amit for the update..it makes my decision easy.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I would say both are equally good. You can go for either of them (LG or Samsung).

    • I MALLICK

I am planning to replace my old Electrolux 445 LTS Fridge with Samsung 394 LTS. My old fridge currently taking 4-5 unit of electricity per day. How my question is as per the level the Samsung Fridge suppose to take 276 unit per year. Is this really the case? Or just advertising ? I am confused about the 276 unit per year mentioned in the level.

      Please can someone help.

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Mr Mallick,

You have to use it to believe it :). By the way these are numbers provided by Bureau of Energy Efficiency which is a government organization that rates appliances. Based on our (Bijli Bachao’s) observation, these numbers are applicable in test conditions and in reality it is 30% more. But still a modern 394 lts refrigerator with inverter technology should not consume more than 1 unit of electricity per day. Your refrigerator must be an old model purchased at least 8-9 years ago (when efficiency levels were not high). And even the technology has improved significantly. So there is no marketing gimmick.

      • I MALLICK

        Thanks a lot Abhishek.

    • Amit

      Advance Thanks!

      Regards,
      Amit

      • Amit

Thanks a ton Mr. Abhishek, for informative replies.

    • Amit

      Hello Mr. Abhishek,
I’m planning to buy a refrigerator in 250-350 Lt. capacity; double door/multi door; Frost free(In Pune). Also surveyed the market for looking at the models, and there were some confusions, if you can help me to clarify:
      1. Apart from Inverter Technology, Samsung is offering convertible technology(Freezer Normal Freeze), but some store persons told that there are complaints with it’s convertible panel, it becomes erroneous after some time. Also company claims that it takes time of some 20 mins to half an hour to convert but actually it takes a long(around 3-4Hrs.). It’s just for luring people, the same can also be achieved by setting the temperature by given temp. control.
      2. In almost all Samsung refrigerators, after opening them a stink of plastic/rubber was coming which was not observed(or comparative very less) in LG/whirlpool
3 Is BEE planning to give its star rating to Whirlpool Proton series, b’coz they claim it as very energy efficient due to separate basket, due to which it needs not to open whole refrigerator every time, leading to make it energy efficient. If BEE has already started to evaluate it and you can share details then it’ll be helpful for all.
      4. Which company is better in after sale service/spare parts between LG, samsung and Whirlpool?
      5. Which company is using the best refrigerant in above 3?
      6. Normally all are offering 10Yrs warranty for compressor and 1 Yr. for rest, so will it be good to buy extended warranty?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Amit,

        Here is my response:

        1. On Bijli Bachao we have not received complaints from anyone about Samsung Smart Convertible. So I cannot confirm on those claims. Also because we have not physically tested the refrigerator, so I cannot confirm on the claims of time taken by refrigerator to convert.

        2. I cannot provide you inputs on plastic/rubber smell from the refrigerators as well. We at Bijli Bachao just take specs from Manufacturers/BEE and provide the list of most efficient models. That is our primary thing. On top of it people ask for our opinions, so we just try to find information about specs and based on that give our opinion.

        3. Proton series is a 3 door series and currently BEE is not rating multi door models. It is just rating single door and two door models. One thing that I know for sure is that Whirlpool does not have inverter technology compressor in any of its models. And the most energy efficient models (2 door) are the ones that have inverter technology. It is quite difficult for a non inverter compressor to beat that kind of efficiency.

        4. After sales service of brands vary from city to city, location to location. And LG, Samsung and Whirlpool are quite similar in terms of their spread across the city and market share. I would say LG and Samsung have slightly more market share than Whirlpool. But then brands at times outsource their service to third parties leading to not-so-good service some times. But then if your area has a dedicated service center, then it may be good. And finally the most important element in service is the service engineer and his skills, which varies from individual to individual. If you search on internet, you will find complaints about each and every brand, because at this scale (national level), it is extremely difficult to be consistent with good quality service. As for spares, you will not find issues with any of these 3 brands.

        5. All of them use R600a these days. Some models may have R134a, but then R600A is better in terms of performance. And most refrigerators have R600a.

        6. So a fridge would have compressor, condenser, evaporator and the rest of the parts (like thermostat, circuit board for control, etc). Compressor is just one part which is a motor. Inverter Technology compressors in general should be more durable because of no wear and tear due to on/off cycle. So easy for them to give 10 years warranty. But then other parts like circuit boards, thermostat, condenser, evaporator, etc are not covered in 10 yrs warranty. In most cases, they should not fail. But then you never know. My own frost free refrigerator from Whirlpool has started giving me troubles after 7 years. It is frost free but frost has started accumulating in the freezer and the engineer says that the heating element (that removes frost) is not working fine. But yes, it has happened after 7 years (not after 1 year). After all these all are machines.

      • Gr8Sam

        Mr Amit,

Is Whirlpool also offering 10y compressor warranty? if so can you kindly let me know if this information is available on the internet?

    • Jaya vasan

Sir, Now I’m at chennai,at Kerala we have a house, this vacation I want to purchase a fridge there. But we’re there at only 10 days, then we will be back to chennai. Next trip mostly after 2months. For this time off the fridge any problem .

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

There should be no problem in the working of the fridge if you do not use it.

    • Rajiv Pandya

Hey Budd..i recently purchased LG model (refrigerator) I302RPZL of 2016.. i just wanted to know that as the said model does not reflect in your recommended list therefore my decision to purchase the aforesaid model is wise or not?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Well as per 2016 ratings this is a BEE 3 star rated model. Last year it was BEE 4 star. It does not appear in the list above because there are more energy efficient models than that this year. However, that does not mean that this is a bad model. It not appearing in the list means that you could have got more energy efficient options as well.

    • Suresh

      Hi
I am looking to buy a refrigerator in the range of 400-480L with a budget max of 60K. Can you refer me some models pls.
      Thanks

      • Suresh

One of the options I have is LG GL-M522GNSL

Let me know other recommended options as well. Thanx

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        You can look at

        LG GL-M522GNSL
        LG GL-M522GDWL
        LG GL-M542GNSL
        Samsung RT47K6358SL/TL

    • moorthi

      hi abhisek,
I m going t buy a new refrigerator with 5star rating 14k-16k budget. which is better in this budget (I have idea on Whirlpool, LG or Godrej brands)

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I think you should go for LG single door model with inverter technology compressor. It would be really good.

    • Waruna

Is Samsung refrigerator inverter compressors are more energy efficient than LG inverter compressors?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

You cannot generalize. You have to check model number and its energy consumption.

      • Waruna

For a family of 3, would it better to get a 3 Star 250Lfridge or 4 Start 320L fridge in terms of electricity consumption? I understand
small 250L fridge will consume less electricity even though its 3 star since it has a small capacity to cool and it will likely be full most of the time compared to a 320L fridge that could be half empty most of the time for a family of 3 but 320L has a 4 start rating.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Go for a smaller fridge. That would be more efficient.

      • Waruna

If I understand correctly, smaller 3 star fridge is more efficient than a slightly larger 4 star fridge?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I would not say it is efficient because efficiency is defined as output/input. If output is less then lesser input does not necessarily mean more efficient. But yes it would consume less electricity as compared to bigger 4 star fridge.

      • Waruna

Is LG GL-M292RLTL an efficient model at 250L capacity range? Can you confirm if its 4 star rated fridge?

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

It was BEE 4 star as per last year’s standard by BEE. As per the current year’s standard it would be BEE 3 star. BEE has made star rating stringent this year and there are hardly any BEE 5 star rated models and all old BEE 5 star have become BEE 4 star and 4 star have become 3 star.

      • Gr8Sam

        Mr Jain,

I seriously doubt your claim, particularly if the star ratings of the models are for the same BEE assessment periods (years). A 3 start rated refrigerator would have higher units listed in their BEE sticker compared to a 4 start one, yes despite the size. Star rating I believe is not even based on category (single, double etc) but purely on the power effeciency, for a given period BEE would classify that for a particular level of star the fridge should have x units under test conditions. Please let me know if otherwise, because this not based on firsthand information. Thanks!

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Here are some links that you can use for your study:

        https://www.beestarlabel.com/

        https://www.beestarlabel.com/Home/Searchcompare

If you go down on the webpage beestarlabel.com you will get Schedule 1 for frost free refrigerators (double door) and schedule 5 for direct cool refrigerators (single door)

      • Gr8Sam

        Thanks Mr Jain,

It does seem to prove existence of two different rating systems for direct cool and frost free fridges. But I am still unconvinced on how you aver that for a given rating period and for a particular class say period 2016-18 and frost free class, a three star smaller capacity fridge will consume less units than a four star bigger capacity fridge (may be true if star rating is same, but…). There seem to be no subdivision on capacity in the sites you have given above. Would it be possible for you to name two models as example? (it does not matter if it is across brands)

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        You can check these two:

Bosch KDN30VR30I is a BEE 3 star rated 288 lts model with annual electricity consumption of 226 units.

LG GL-T522GNSL is a BEE 4 star rated 470 lts model with annual electricity consumption of 236 units.

Size matters a lot when energy consumption is concerned.

      • Gr8Sam

Does this mean BEE is rating based capacity as well? (in addition to period and class criterion)

      • https://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

If you look at this schedule: https://www.beestarlabel.com/Content/Files/Schedule1_FFR.pdf

Formula for star rating band is: knf * Vadj_tot_nf + cnf

Which means that it does involve volume of the refrigerator as well.

    • ankit

      Dear abhisek,

Recently lg launching smart inverter technology in direct cool model(215/190)
.can any other brand have better tech
?if yes please suggest and tell me disadvantage of smart inverter tech. If have.
      regards,
      ankit

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

There are no major disadvantages of going with inverter tech. It is the best thing available out there. The only thing that I can think of is that it is a new technology so repairs are expensive. But it is energy efficient. LG is the only one that I think has launched inverter tech in direct cool model.

    • varun

      hi abhishek
what to buy refrigerator capacity 350 lit to 400lits range between 35 k 45 k with inverter technology the list above is very good but bit confusing for me. can u plz suggest me refrigerator with good storage capacity with double door ,frost free and inverter technology , 3star or 4 what ur recommendation.
      thx for the list above.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Varun,

For a refrigerator we always recommend to go for the most efficient one as it will be used 24 hrs a day and 365 days. So BEE 4 star rated would be best.

Also can you please help me understand the confusion that you have from the list? The objective of putting this site is to have people look at it and understand it themselves, because it becomes impossible to give manual attention to each and every visitor. We get about 50000 people on this site every day and hundreds of questions everyday. So out aim is to make things that are most easy to understand.

      • varun

        thx for reply abhishek ,

confusing means little tricky for me not for all.
thx for ur hard work on the above list i appreciate it a lot.
plz suggest me a model no of any brand u prefer with good storage capacity between 350 to 450 liters.
with latest technology like inverter and all, range between 40k to 45k
ur recommendations means a lot .

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Varun,

LG, Samsung, Godrej and Hitachi would have models with high efficiency and inverter technology in that price range. If you are a vegetarian then Samsung’s Smart Convertible refrigerators can be a great choice. Else you will get lot more choices in LG. I can suggest you a model number, but what I have seen is that people sometimes do not get those models in the market. Our data is based on models available online (Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, etc). But what is available in store is sometimes different.

      • varun

thx Abhishek for ur concern,at my location online services r not available, but u can tell m model no so that i can cheek them in store for there availability and yes i am vegetarian
        thx again

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Attached is the filtered data (in the table above) based on your requirement. The Samsung model should work well for you (but don’t blame me if it doesn’t :) ).

    • abhi

im planning to buy double door fridge 300 lts this week stuck b/w Lg vs samsung which is good do smart conversion avilable in lg also

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Go for samsung if you want smart convertible.

    • Hamzath Mohammed

      HI,

Is it better to buy two small fridges with 165 litre or lesser capacity instead of buying one bigger one. One mechanic suggested the same . what is your opinion ?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

I think it is better to go for 1 big fridge than 2 small fridges. One machine can handle efficiency better.

    • abhi

can u suggest a refrigrator double door in 35k range what would be good samsung or lg is smart comvertion model is good

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Abhi,

We have given list of all the BEE star rated refrigerators in the table above. You can use the filters in the table to filter out your preferred brand, budget range and can sort it by annual electricity consumption to get the right models (I will also do the same if I have to).

      • abhi

lg vs samsung which is good do smart conversion avilable in lg also

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Both are good. Smart Convertible is not there in LG. If you want smart convertible then go for Samsung.

    • Pratyush

Hi. Kindly suggest whether Siemens is a good brand to go for? What about service support and spare parts availability.
Kindly suggest siemen KG57NAI501 or Samsung RT47H567ESL or Samsung RT49K6758S9.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Pratyush,

Siemens is a good european brand with great technology, but their energy efficiency numbers are quite low. In BEE ratings, most of their models are just 2 or 1 star rated. So if you are concerned about electricity consumption, then I would say avoid them. Samsung RT49K6758S9/TL is a BEE 3 star rated refrigerator. RT47H567ESL is not there in the latest list by BEE, so cannot comment on the energy efficiency levels for the same.

But I think Samsung RT49K6758S9/TL is a good choice.

    • Keyur Patel

      Suggest a freez upto 30 to 40k
Two or three door for the family of 4person
And ya i m confused for which company refrigerator i shd buy

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Keyur,

For a 4 person family 250-300 lts should be more than enough. As for technology, I would recommend you to go for a refrigerator with inverter technology compressor. Currently LG, Samsung, Godrej, Hitchi and Panasonic have inverter technology compressors. You can look at the list (in the <300 lts section) above and you will find several LG and Samsung models that can fit in your budget as well as would have inverter technology compressor.

      • Keyur Patel

        Thanx a lot sir
        LG GL-U303JSOL OR
Whirlpool NEO FR305 ROYAL PLUS 4S

I would say LG. Because it has inverter compressor.

    • Ajit B

      Hello Abhishek

First of all thanks for such wonder full web page with bundle of knowledge. Its a great platform which helps to make decision.
I want to buy a refrigerator for family having 8 members. looking for multi door model. Please suggest me a good models.

also please give your opinion for Whirlpool Fp 313D Protton Roy Multi-door Refrigerator.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Firstly I would say that I always recommend people to buy a refrigerator with inverter technology compressor. It is the most efficient and latest technology. You can get inverter technology in LG, Samsung, Godrej, Hitachi and Panasonic.

Secondly multi door refrigerators are not rated by BEE on energy efficiency. And just because they are not rated, manufacturers do not provide enough data to make an informed decision. I would say manufacturers of all kinds of appliances hide information and do not provide it unless it is made mandatory. In this case, for single door and double door refrigerators, BEE has made it mandatory for manufacturers to provide data and thus they do. But for others, they do not provide data, so I cannot comment much on them.

If you are looking for 300 lts double door model then you can look at the list above on this page of top most energy efficient models. I think you can get some good models in LG, Samsung and Godrej.

    • JItendra

      Hi Abhishek,
I want to buy Haier HRD-2156BS-H, Can you advise that it brand and model is good? Its 5 star so, actually it is?
Also suggest about HRD 2156PSL of Haier.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Jitendra,

Haier is a good chinese brand (please note, not all chinese brands are bad). And this model is BEE 5 star rated, so it is energy efficient. So if you want to go for it, then you may certainly do that.

      • JItendra

        Thanks Abhishek,
I am comparing in Haier & Panasonic so can you suggest which one is better?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

As a brand I would say Panasonic would be better.

    • Sameer

What is meant by Units consumed per year. Is this the total units consumed per year?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

That is right. It is total units consumer per year in test conditions.

    • amit

      Hello Abhishek ….

We need a refrigerator in the price range of 10000-15000. Request you to sugggest me a good one. We are confused between Samsung , Whirlfool, Viedeocon .

Also In samsung the back is covered and open in rest all but i have heared that is is not good for refrigerators to be open. Plz clear this fact also. So should we go for samsung or Whirlfool.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

Whirlpool 205 ICEMAGIC POWERCOOL PRM 5S TTN or Videocon VC205PT would be best option for you. There are no BEE 5 star rated models from Samsung in your budget that I could find in our database.

Open back can actually be better for electricity consumption as it provides easy heat exchange for the condenser. But then overall design determines electricity consumption. The models mentioned above would be good for you.

    • Madhu

Hi Abhishek – I m looking for a refrigerator Single door- frost free – with good Star rating. We want to gift my friend. Family of 2-3 members. Please suggest.

        LG GL-M302RPZL

        LG GL-D302JSFL

        LG GL-C282RSPL

        Samsung RT30K37547E/HL

As you can see from attached image. Samsung model mentioned above would be the best choice as it is BEE 4 star rated.

    • Cyril Jose

As asked before repeating the same question regarding Samsung refrigerator model RT56H667ESL which we are planning to buy. pls help us on this issue

Thanks Mr. Abhishek Jain for guidance.

I got the other doubt, as the Samsung is saying smart inverter technology (which will consume less power from home inverter 28.9 watts when power failure) and as my solar system is working with an inverter of pure sine wave, whether this refrigerator will count this solar inverter as normal inverter and may consume less as 28.9 watts ,which is not the normal operation. In this condition whether this refrigerator will work with full performance? will it work normal as we plugged to the electricity? hope u can help me with this question.

    • Cyril Jose

Hai, can you pls guide me on Samsung refrigerator model RT56H667ESL, regarding the power consumption per day as well as the starting wattage , as my home is equipped with solar lighting system of 1.5 Kw , and the refrigerator to be connected with solar power. Whether it can be work with full efficiency on solar power?.or is there any other model which I can run on solar power with low consumption 400-600 ltrs and ,the Bosch refrigerators KDN30VR30I of 288 ltr capacity also.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Mr Cyril,

Samsung RT56H667ESL is an inverter technology compressor refrigerator. It can very easily work with your 1.5 kW solar system. Inverter technology compressors do not need high starting current and at max this refrigerator would consume 1-1.5 amp current (or 200-300 watts at peak capacity). I do not see any problem in this model working with your 1.5 kW solar pv system. And yes it can work with full efficiency (that is the benefit of inverter technology). I do not think you need to replace it.

      • Cyril Jose

Thanks Mr. Abhishek Jain for guidance.

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Mr Cyril,

I guess you are getting confused with inverter technology, power inverter and solar inverter. All of them are very different things:

By definition an inverter is something that converts DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current). Now that is basic electrical engineer’s definition of inverter. It does not mean power backup, it does not mean solar backup. It is plain a device that converts Direct Current to Alternating Current.

Now What is Power Inverter as you have known of since many years:

Power Inverter is a system that involves 1) A set of batteries 2) An Inverter. Batteries store electricity that comes from mains. Batteries provide electricity in DC (or Direct Current). Now all our appliances run on AC, and that is why an “Inverter” is needed to convert DC to AC as the electricity from battery cannot be directly used by our appliances. Have you ever tried connecting a regular 100 watt bulb to two ends of a battery? You must have seen that it glows without having to put an inverter in between. You can even try taking a AA battery, take two wires put them on two ends of a AA battery and put those wires on small bulb and it glows. A regular bulb can work on DC current from batteries, but appliances like fans, electronics, etc work on AC. And that is why “Inverter” is needed to convert DC to AC.

        Now what is Solar Inverter:
Solar Inverter is not much different from Power Inverter. Just that in case of Solar Inverter, the batteries are charged using solar power instead of electricity coming from the mains. Once the battery is charged, the rest of the functioning is exactly similar to that of regular power inverter. The function of “Inverter” here again is exactly the same, which is to convert DC from battery to AC. Why is it given a different name? because the method of charging the battery is different and that is why it is called solar inverter. Otherwise you can easily convert your regular inverter to solar inverter.

        Now what is Inverter Technology?
This is something that is confusing users quite a lot. Regular air conditioners/Refrigerators/washing machiens have a compressor that is an AC motor i.e. one that works on Alternating Current (and that is why power inverter has to convert DC to AC to make your refrigerator work). But Inverter Technology compressors are motors that are called Brushless DC motors. These are motors that run on DC (or Direct Current). But because the input power that is coming on our main line is AC, these machines have built in “Inverter” that converts AC to DC for the motor to run. It DOES NOT have any power backup. It CANNOT work in case of power failure as it does not have any battery. Please note to store electricity a battery is required. And this DOES NOT have any battery. One should not confuse Inverter Technology compressor with Power Inverter. They are two very different things.

In case of power failure you would need a power inverter (inverter + battery) system to run it. In case of power failure you CAN run it on solar inverter (Solar PV + inverter + battery) system. But please do not confuse it with power inverter as it is not power inverter which is there in inverter technology. This refrigerator can work on regular plugged electricity, it can work on power inverter, it can work on solar inverter. And IT DOES NOT have any power backup of its own.

      • Cyril Jose

        thanks again mr. Abhishek Jain

Are there any 2016 BEE rating 5 star rated inverter refrigerators between 300L and 420L in the Indian Market?

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

BEE has made the star rating stricter in 2016 and based on the new ratings, there are no frost free models in BEE 5 star rating as of now. The only ones are BEE 4 star rated.

    • Shriram

Please suggest me for LG latest refrigerator 255,258 ltr BEE4* models. i have power cut in our city. and what i have to check on power saving BEE label on refrigerator. I panning to buy on Padwa. Suggest me for best power saver Geyser for 4 members . Thanks

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hello Mr Sriram,

With refrigerators there is a lot of chaos between the models listed by manufacturers on their website and that on BEE’s list. What we have listed above are the models that we found common (both on manufacturers’ websites and BEE’s list). Based on that you can look at LG GL-U292JSOL or LG GL-U302JSOL. These are BEE 4 star rated as per BEE’s new star rating standards for refrigerators.

The only thing that you should use to compare two models should be the annual electricity consumption mentioned on the BEE labels of two models. The one with least number should be the one you should consider. A BEE 4 star rated refrigerator of 255 lts should consume about 190-200 units per year.

    • Shulkha

      Hi,
I’m planning to buy a single door refrigerator for
Family members – 1 or 2(max) because I stay alone.
Please suggest some good options considering:
      1. Less power consumption
      2. Good servicing
And of course should be of good quality.
      Thanks in advance,

      • http://www.bijlibachao.com Abhishek Jain

        Hi Shulkha,

A 180-200 lts single door refrigerator from LG, Samsung or Godrej would be good for you. Using filters:

        Brand: LG, Samsung or Godrej

        Size: 180-200 lts

        Type: DIRECT COOL

here is what I got from the table above:

I am seeing new Samsung refrigerators in market , which are double door, and capacity 250-253 ltr., BEE 3 star ( energy consumption 240) , whereas BEE 4 star in LG has consumption ( 243). Every year , I think these star ratings are degraded. I saw e-commerce website selling old refrigerators with 4 star BEE, which now is shown as 3 star on company website like LG. Energy consumption between 3 and 4 star is minimal. As per what I saw in Bajaj Electronics Hyderabad.

Every BEE star label has year of validation mentioned on it. Even the color of star is changed regularly. One year the stars are red and the next year it is green. But the most important thing to check if the year when the star rating was given and that is mentioned on the label.

        Hi Raj,

        LG GL-M292RPZL
        LG GL-A282SPZL

Thanks so much Jain. Can I go for Above LG or Samsung RT27JARMAVL, RT27JARMESE? Which one is good.

The LG models I suggested are BEE 4 star. These Samsung models are BEE 3 star. LG models are better I would say.

For bigger sized refrigerators, Hitachi and Panasonic can be quite good. Are you looking for double door or multi door refrigerator? What sized refrigerator are you looking for?

      Hi Mr. Abhishek Jain,

I am using 320L frost free double door Siemens make refrigerator 3 star rating for last 14 years. It has got compressed gas cooling coils outside the body.

Due to its robust built, except for door gasket replacement, I did not require any repair on it. However, I am of the opinion that the frequency of re-starts has gone up now gradually over the years.. Could the refrigerant leak takes place from the domestic refrigerator? If yes, could this be a reason for frequent re-starts?

I don’t want to replace this refrigerator unless it has some serious irreparable fault.

      Thanking you in anticipation,

      Shriniwas Hingne

        Hello Mr Murthy,

The whole purpose of creating this website and this page is to use technology in such a way that people can use the tools themselves and figure out what is good for them. The table/list mentioned above on this page is mostly self-explanatory and quite easy to use. Although we have tried helping people at individual level in the past but our goal is to make tools so that people can figure out what they want themselves. It gets extremely difficult for us to answer each person individually when the number of questions are a lot. And we get about 30000 people per day on this site during peak periods!!! Our objective is to make tools to help people make a right decision. But we feel as if our objective is not achieved when people do not make use of the tools.

From what I understand, you need a frost free refrigerator of 260L to 300L within a budget of 25-30K. Also you are looking at godrej and LG brands. If you look at the list of top refrigerators above (if you expand the tab for Frost Free (<300 lts), you will find that LG model GL-M302RPZL is on Number 4. It has capacity of 285 lts and costs about Rs 27199. It fits perfectly in your requirement. As none of the godrej models are in the top ten list above, I would recommend you to go for the LG models. LG has inverter technology which is far better than any technology out there in the market. You can read more about inverter technology over here: http://www.bijlibachao.com/refrigerators/refrigerators-with-inverter-technology-can-help-save-electricity.html
