Working of air coolers:

Most of the coolers available today are evaporative coolers also known as swamp coolers or desert coolers. In these coolers, hot air from outside is passed over water. The water takes up the heat from the outside air and it evaporates. Hence due to the transfer of heat from air to water, the temperature of air decreases, making it comparatively cooler. This cool air is then directed inside the room. This process when repeated constantly brings down the overall temperature of the room making it pleasant during a hot sunny day.

The outside air is drawn into the cooler with help of a fan where it passes through the cooling pads. The evaporation of water takes places within these cooling pads. A pump is used to bring the water on the top of the cooling pads and is then allowed to trickle down through the pads.

As the working of the coolers involves only evaporation of water, it is the most environment friendly way of space cooling. There is no involvement of cooling gases, and so now you can cool yourself without adding to global warming!

Air Cooler

Things to be considered while buying a cooler

Key things to consider while buying Air Cooler:

1) Buy the right size. Look at CFM calculation below.

2) Honeycomb pads are better.

3) Galvanised steel body coolers have more efficiency and longevity.

4) Highly efficient as compared to Air Conditioners.

5) Look for Humidity Control feature if you are in a humid city.

For a cooler to work efficiently it is very important to use a cooler having correct size as per the size of the room you want to cool. The sizing of coolers is determined by a unit called CFM that is, Cubic feet per minute. The CFM is a unit that is used to measure the air flow. The higher the CFM means the fan is moving more air into the room. There is a simple calculation that will help you find the right size of the cooler you need.

Air delivery or Air displacement (in CFM) = Area of room in square feet x height of your room / 2

(The factor 2 in the denominator denotes that the air in the room is changed once in every 2 minutes)

For example if your room is 100 square feet in area and the ceiling is 8 feet high then,

Air delivery or Air displacement (in CFM) = 100 x 8 / 2

                                                                 =400 cubic feet/ min

But most of the leading brands today mention the air displacement in cubic metres / hour.

So to convert CFM to to cubic metres/hour multiply CFM Value by a factor of 1.699.

1 cubic metre/ hour = 1.699 x 1 CFM.

In our example the size of cooler required is 400 CFM which is equivalent to ,

1.699 x 400 = 680 cubic metres / hour (approx).

It is very important to have a cooler of the right size, if the cooler is smaller than the size required then it will have to work for longer time to cool the room and so it may consume more energy depending on the difference in wattage of the small and right sized coolers.

Effectiveness in various temperatures:

Air coolers work the best in hot and dry climates. The working of the air coolers depends on the evaporation of water into the atmosphere. Hence if more water evaporates, the air will be cooler. But there is a limit to the air holding capacity of the atmosphere, so if the air is already humid, it will not be able to hold more water and as a result the air is not cooled to the extent it would cool in drier climates. Hence higher the humidity, lesser will be the effect of the coolers. Now a days manufactures are making coolers with a feature called ‘Humidity Control’ to overcome this drawback. Many leading brands such as Bajaj and Symphony manufacture models having special features for controlling humidity and can be used in humid coastal regions as well.

The figure shows the relation between the outside temperatures and the humidity in the air.

Air Cooler

(The temperatures mentioned are in Fahrenheit, use the calculator given to convert them to Celsius: http://www.manuelsweb.com/temp.htm)

So if the outside air temperature is 90 Fahrenheit (32.2 Celsius) and the humidity is 30% then the outside air can be cooled up to 74 Fahrenheit (23.3 Celsius). As the humidity goes on increasing, the effective temperatures delivered by the cooler also become higher.

Power consumption, efficiency and other factors:

1. The power consumed by the air coolers is very less as compared to air conditioners. A 1-ton AC would consume 0.8 units in an hour whereas an air cooler for equivalent size of room would only consume 0.1 units in an hour. Similarly a 1.5-ton AC would consume about 1.2-1.3 units in an hour whereas an air cooler for equivalent size of room would only consume 0.12 units in an hour. Higher energy consumption translates to higher electricity bills. Hence along with being eco friendly, coolers are also pocket friendly!

2. Apart from climate, even the cooling pads used contribute to the efficiency. The patterns used in the cooling pads have a great effect on the water absorption and evaporation process. Two popular patterns are the honeycomb and the aspen (wood wool). The difference in both patterns is the capacity of absorbing water and facilitating the passage of air through it. Aspen pads are approximately 75% efficient in contrast to honeycomb pads that are approximately 85% efficient.

3. Another factor to be considered is the material used to make the cooler. Fiber body coolers look more elegant than their steel body counterparts but have smaller cooling pad area. Therefore fiber coolers have lesser cooling efficiency as compared to the steel body coolers. Galvanized steel body offers protection against rusting and hence will give longer life to the coolers along with increased efficiency.

Main advantages:

  1. Apart from being affordable, the air coolers use water for cooling and do not use any refrigerant such as CFC, HCFC etc. for cooling as is the case in air conditioners. Hence they are very Eco friendly.
  2. The initial cost of buying a cooler is much less than that of an air conditioner. That means lower investment!
  3. The power consumed by these coolers is much less as compared to the air conditioners, so the annual energy saving is significant. So along with lower investment, the cost of using coolers is less than using ACs
  4. Coolers are portable. Hence it is very easy to place them in the room that you want to cool.
  5. Air conditioners cool the air inside a room and again direct the air into the same room, whereas air coolers use fresh outside air, cool it and direct it inside the room. Hence more fresh air is circulated in the room.

Disadvantages:

  1. The major disadvantage of an air cooler is its dependency on the climate. In areas with very high humidity, the coolers may prove to be less efficient. The air coming out of the coolers is humid because of the evaporated water. Therefore, coolers add to the humidity in air. So while buying a cooler look for ‘Humidity Control’ in specifications of the cooler.
  2. Coolers also need a continuous supply of water. Also if you are living in a region with hard water, the internal parts of your cooler are at a higher risk of corrosion. Maintenance is required more frequently for these coolers.
  3. The fan in the air coolers makes noise that might be disturbing.

Tips for better working:

  1. In contrast to the myth of closing all doors and widows while using air cooling, having good ventilation will work in favor of your cooler. Keep the doors and windows open so that there is enough flow of fresh air in the room. And placing the cooler near the window will be an added advantage and will cool the room faster.
  2. Incase there is foul smell coming from your cooler, it is an indication to clean it. Cleaning and maintaining your cooler will help increase its lifetime.
  3. Adding ice water or ice in coolers will lower the temperatures even further. So using ice water is a good idea on very hot days.

I have an ac in my bedroom. I am from Hooghly near Kolkata and area is very humid. As per my concern aircooler is not suitible in our area due to humidity factor. If I use a cooler and a dehumidifier for reducing humidity causing

I do not think that it is a wise solution. The basic principle of working of air cooler is by adding humidity to hot dry air. Firstly if the air is humid, then not much of it would work. Secondly, when the air is not cool enough, even dehumidifying it will not make it very comfortable. There is no way you can make a cooler work in humid areas. Air Conditioner is the only solution.

By air cooler , is this idea is correct. Please advice . This plan for my dining come kitchen room. Room size 130 sq ft. Plz advice

Hi Abhishek, I have inverter of luminous eco volt 1050 and 180 ah lum's battery. Does air cooler works on inverter? If yes, which type is best and watt.

5
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Air Coolers do work on Inverter. And your luminous eco volt should be able to handle it.

I recently installed two coolers at two rooms. One is working well, the other is not. Both installed on Windows in Balcony and directed to room. Can you suggest what modifications I need for the second one to work well.

City: Raipur. Temp: 40+ throughout Mid-March to Mid-June. Humidity: <30%

Cooler1: A standard 15" GEC Type Fan Cooler. Dimensions: 3.5 ft high, 2ft breadth, and 2ft depth. (Standard size available in market). Water flow: Very good. Working perfect.

Cooler 2: (customized for the window): 15" GEC type fan. Dimensions: 2ft ht, 2ft bread, and 3 ft depth. Water flow: relatively less. Speed of fan is relatively less. Cooling is very slow.

I've three doubts for the bad working of the second cooler: 1. Due to odd dimensions, as it is custom built for the window. 2. Fan speed a bit less. 3. Water speed a bit less.

It it is issue 1, I think there's nothing much I can do, except possibly reducing the depth (height and breadth are fixed, as it is custom made to my window hole). Should I reduced the width so that the hay is closer to the fan? Would that give me better cooling?

If it is issue 2, should adding another capacitor (say 0.5 times current condensor strength) alleviate the problem? Or would that spoil my fan motor all the way?

It is is issue 3, whether replacing the water flow motor would help?

I'm confused whether I should go for remedy 1 or 2 or 3, or if what should be the pecking order of remedies I should attempt.

Thanks

Hi Salman,

I am sorry, I will not be able to help you remotely. It will be good if you can get an air cooler mechanic to check your setup physically.

Thanks. I'll do that.

Hi Abhishek
I live in Faridabad and the room size that I want to cool is 10x10ft, which then opens into a larger room size of 22x12ft with a height of 10ft, so basically it is a 'Y'-shaped room with a window at rear end almost exactly opposite to the front main door. Here we have three major issues: 1. Rear side of the flat is completely open and the air is generally very dusty having high levels of particulate matter, so despite having the provision to provide good cross-stitch can not do so due to dusty winds, 2. Water is bit salty, and 3. Temperatures are generally high and humid starting from mid-april to end of August. So, considering the above criteria, can you please suggest any air cooler model that best suits my room size, that I can mount in my window, and that can give me aerosol-free air (so with a filter). Or do you think a split AC is the only best option. Please comment.

Thank you so much

Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Mohan,

You will have to install a window air cooler and then you will have to check the dust accumulation on the pads and as soon as they get a bit dirty or white (because of salt), then you will have to clean them. The frequency of this process of cleaning will have to be determined based on the accumulation of dust/salt. It can be every 15 days or every 2 days as well, depending on the levels of pollution. The air will get cleaned up as soon as the air passes through the moist pads. When the air is dry and temperature is high, this would be very effective.

This would be the cheapest option which would be good enough for dry weather in Delhi. You may go for AC as well if you want. Also you can either get locally made window air coolers or you can buy the branded ones available online. If you are looking for online options, then you can check these:

Bajaj Glacier MD 2020 54-Litre Window Air Cooler (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2qBVxIp )
Symphony Window 41 Air Cooler (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pWDY79 )

Nice article. Can yo please suggest me how effective are centralized air cooler for an apartment . I stay in Pune so humidity levels are ver low compared to Mumbai and weather is not that extreme . Maximum it goes to 42 degrees and even then the nights never go higher than 32.

12
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Shubh,

Centralised coolers are effective and should work for an apartment as well as long has you have a way to install the cooler somewhere (may be a balcony) and you provide ducting in the house. You just need space to install the cooler.

13

Dear Mr. Abhishek,

I have an room size of area of 725 sq. ft. with the height being 9 ft. From the above highlighted calculation, I understand that I would need to get an air cooler with 5542.988 cumh.
Secondly, humidity level of the room varies from 58 to 65 % while the temperature varies from 30 to 32 degree Celsius.
The room is an office environment room enclosed one with no ventilation facility.
May request you to suggest, should I still go for an Air Cooler. If yes, which one would be the most suitable given the above conditions. Even i want to go for a cooler, how efficiently will it perform.

14
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sibu,

Couple of things make me think that cooler may not be right for your office:

1) Proper ventilation is a must for cooler to work effectively. It works by adding humidity to dry air. But if there is no ventilation, it will just keep adding humidity to existing air inside the room and will make it extremely unfomfortable.

2) Also on top of that the humidity levels are already quite high.

So I do not think cooler will be suited for you. In case you can get ducts built up and place a duct cooler outside the office and get dry air from outside cooled using a cooler then it may work. But then again the humidity levels are already high.

15

Hi, great article.
I need to replace the fan in my old cooler (metal body) since it makes too much noise. do you have any suggestion for the fan? i am looking for something which does not make much noise.

16
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Stephen,

I am sorry, we do not have much data on cooler fans to make a suggestion to you.

17

Hi Sir,

I am from Ahmedabad and used your calculator for my big living room tonnage capacity calc- it's turns out to be 5.6 tonne (23ft x 26 ft x 10 ft, No direct sunlight from top, No Sun facie walls, 5 hours daily for 3-4 months an year - have two ceiling fans which we will keep on - but no where we can mention in calculator). I am planning to get Mitsubishi Heavy duty - 2 tonne Non-Inverter model split ac (heavy duty for long air flow). Kindly suggest. Please also suggest any other better AC choice - in terms of energy saving for the usage mentioned.

Thanks in Advance,
Ashish

18
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Ashish,

Your room is quite big and any 2 Ton AC would be small for the room. You can certainly go for MHI as they have long air flow that can help cover larger area, but then cooling capacity of the AC will be less and so it will take quite some time to cool the room (or it may not cool the whole room as well). So your best bet is to go for MHI which can cover larger area. And non inverter would be better because inverter AC will keep running at peak capacity when undersized so much and thus it may not give desired electricity saving benefits. So 2 or 2.2 ton non inverter split AC model from MHI would be the best choice for you (in terms of cooling and in terms of saving electricity).

Thanks a lot for a very informative article!!
Based on all the discussions below, one can conclude that Air Coolers are not efficient in super humid climates such as Mumbai, Chennai etc. It seems, Air Conditioner is the only efficient option available. But installation and shifting of AC units is herculean task.

Will you recommend buying portable ACs in India ??

There are very few manufactures of the same ..Lloyd, AMFAH.. Although, prices are in the range of 27k -35k, for a family staying in rented flats, these portable AC could have been a better option.

What might be the reason for not having other top brands in this product category race ?

20
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Akhil,

Biggest challenge with portable AC is to achieve right level of insulation and efficiency. You will find that most of these portable ACs are not very energy efficient. So for portability you compromise on electricity consumption. Secondly even though they are portable, they have to be near a window because it has to throw hot air out. If an outdoor unit sits outside, heat exchange becomes easy. So in general it is a bit cumbersome to have it.

21

Hi Abhishek
Thanks for your response in choosing the air cooler, i purchased Ram coolers Utasv 380H online from ramcoolers.com for 13,000 and got door delivery on 4th day itself (Maharaja Atlanto+ was not available in my area) it seems slightly bigger but almost serves the purpose better and needs to provide more ventilation to avoid moisture/humidity(may be due to bigger size than required), needed to make some small adjustments in setting it up to overcome small fine finishing defects in water drop holes in tray placed above honey comb padding, welding pop ups on stand fitting, piping adjustments...etc remaining all working well, cools my living room nd also bed room store room too which has doors open into living room nd facing in line with cooler. Over all its satisfactory.

22
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sekhar,

Thanks a lot for the feedback. It really helps others in taking a decision and us in making a recommendation.

23

Sir im anil from kutch gujarat my room size is 10*12 feet height 8 feet, room has 1 window and 2 door ventilation good but in night 2 door closed so desert cooler is best or personal??
How much ventilation effect on cooler ?
Im very impressed with touch 35 so can i go for this ?
Or maharaja whiteline blizzard 50, slim50, or diet 50i which one is best im very confused pls solve this

24
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

The air coolers work by adding moisture to dry air and thus making it cool. If there is no ventilation then humidity inside the room will keep increasing and it may become uncomfortable. So ventilation is required for both desert cooler and personal cooler. So it will be better if you keep the doors open.

Then again desert coolers take dry air from outside and try to cool it. But room coolers try to cool the air inside the room and thus the need of ventilation is much more in room/personal coolers.

25

pls sugesst me 2 models from below
Touch 35
Diet 35 t
Hicool i
Maharaja blizzard 50
Maharaja slim 50
Diet 22i

And

22litre is enough for one 7 to 8 hours??

26
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

22 lts should be good enough for 6-8 hrs. 35 lts should be more than enough for 8 hours. You can go for Touch 35 as it is quite feature rich. Or you can go for Diet 35t.

27

If i go with touch then how can we care of touch pannel and if in future touch pannel not work so whats repair cost of this and at that time remote will work or not?

28
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Anil,

Would suggest you to contact Symphony to get idea on repair cost. I am not aware of it. And remote should work when touch panel is not working.

29

Hello Abhishek

I stay i locality where water is very salty what kind of cooler suitable for me.

Plastic body or steel body.

Room size is normal 12 x 10 ft .

What are the other things to be kept in mind before buying cooler where water is harsh/very salty?

Any cooler brand you can suggest?

Regards
Josephine

30
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

With harsh water, corrosion would be a problem. So plastic body would be better. You can look at any of these:

Symphony DiET 12i (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ppLDtv )
Symphony Ice cube i (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ptd56T )
Maharaja Whiteline Thunder+ (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pIjWss )
Orient Electric Supercool CP3001H (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ptk13Z )

31

Abhishek,

Looking for room cooler. Stay in Indore (MP) . Following cooler I filtered. Pls advise the best one.

Symphony Touch 35-Litre Air Cooler (White)
Voltas VB P15M 15-Litres 155-Watt Air Cooler(White)
Symphony Hicool i 31-Litre Air Cooler with Remote (White)-For Medium room
Bajaj Platini PX97 36-Litre Room Cooler (White)
Kenstar Double Cool Dx 50-Litre Air Cooler (White)

32
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Pankaj,

You will find Symphony models to be more feature rich. Like Symphony Touch has many air filters that are usually found in air conditioners (like dust filter, odour filter, etc). It also has humidity control, mosquito repellent, etc. Even the HiCool model from Symphony has humidity control, ice chamber, etc. So if you want something feature rich then go for Symphony (Touch has most features).

But if you are looking for a basic cooler that work well, then Kenstar Double Cool model is highly rated in general. It has strong positive feedback.

33

Thanks Abhi for your time. I am looking for best suitable option in terms of durability/functioning/cooling and most effective among them. Pls further review and advise.

34
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

You may go for Symphony Touch 35.

35

Hii Abhishek, i am living in Kolkata at a rented house. i want a inside room cooler with electric efficient. room size is h*l*w 9.5*13*11. some people says humidity is in kolkata but i do not humidity is a available or not. if you know how to check humidity please tell me and please suggest me a cooler within 8000.

36
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Mishra,

If you search for Kolkata Humidity on Google ( https://www.google.co.in/search?q=kolkata+humidity ) ... you will see that it is 43% ... It is on a higher side. Air cooler works by adding moisture to air and it happens better when the air is dry. In Humid air adding moisture does not help. And that is why a cooler may not be very effective in Kolkata.

37

Thank you for your valuable suggestion.

38

Hi Abhishek,
Which one will be better, Maharaja Atlanto+ Desert cooler or Ram coolers Gold 240/250(Presently Ram coolers Smart 240H is not in stock). Please give your views on indoor usage and outdoor(exposed to sunlight) usage on both models. Thank you.

39
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sekhar,

Ram cooler uses Galvanised Steel Body which is in general much better for outdoor usage (it can be used indoor as well). But to handle harsh weather, galvanised steel is better. But it may not look very attractive indoor where people prefer plastic body which looks more attractive. For indoor usage Atlanto+ would be better as it is movable and has honeycomb pads.

40

Hello sir cud u pls suggest me any gud cooler for a room 10by 10 means 100squarefeet n it's on 1st floor

41

Can you please help. I am looking for a cooler with these features:

- inverter compatible
- honeycomb pads
- remote
- wheels
- biggest size tank capacity
- good reviews
- fan

Thanks

42
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is the size of your room? and what is your budget?

43

No limit to the budget. I'm looking for the biggest possible size in this category as I have discovered that there is more cooling relative to the size. I liked Havells new models but I don't think they can run on inverter.

44
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

You can look at any of these:

Kelvinator Desert Cooler Erin KDC 70A
Orient Ocean Air CD7001H
Ram Coolers Duct 330H or Smart 500H
Voltas VN-D70EH
Voltas VN-D70MH
Voltas VE-D60MH (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/Os7XX!NNNN )

45

Hi Abhishek,
looking to buy an air cooler for my living room of 275 sq.ft, facing direct sunlight on roof and tends to get more hot, my town weather(anantapur in AP) is almost like nagpur, is there any difference between desert cooler and inside room air cooler ? noise level, moisture/humidity and cooling capacity ? we have an 40" lcd/led tv in living room, should i take any precautions for it ? please suggest few desert or air coolers which suits my purpose better.

46
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Shekhar,

Desert coolers usually sit outside the room (on a window or through a duct). They take hot dry air from outside cool it and send it inside the room. Room Coolers take the air inside the room and try to add moisture to it to cool the room. They require good ventilation else the air inside keeps getting humid and uncomfortable.

As compared to AC, the noise of cooler is certainly on a higher side. Also as long as you size the cooler right, it should be able to cool the room.

If you have electronics in the room, then they would be prone to humid air and can thus have problems (corrosion etc).

Here are a few coolers you can look at:

Ram Coolers Smart 240H (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oUUqCI )
Maharaja Whiteline Atlanto Desert
Maharaja Whiteline Rambo (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pSeIya )
Orient Snowbreeze Slim CD5501H (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pS2ci6 )
Usha Honeywell CL 601PM (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pSevuP )
Voltas VE-D60MH (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/Os7XX!NNNN )

47
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Symphony Jumbo is good. You can certainly put it in direct sunlight.

48

Hi AbhiShek Sir,
I Live In Hyderabad, and Room Size is 12lx15wx10h Ft, Pls Suggest which model I should take in Ram Coolers.

49
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Ram Coolers Duct 204 (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pXXGLe ) or Smart 230S would be fine for your room.

50

Hello sir. This is Deene. I purchased a new jumbo Jr 22l yesterday. It's nice giving cool air. But the water is getting over in 4 hrs time. It's making pump sound after 4 to 5 hrs. It's a very big problem in the midnight. Can I use cool swing even after the water dried and will there be no problem for the pump? Please give me your advice.

Thanks in advance

51
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Using fan only mode after water has dried up should not cause any problem. But it will be better if you switch off the pump when there is no water.

52

Thanks Ji for your suggestions.
Regards,
Deen

53

you mention "noiseless coolers" any examples? dont they get noisy day by day..

54
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

There are many brands that claim quite performance. Symphony has models that have "Whisper quite" as a feature in a few models (like Symphony Sumo, Symphony Jumbo). You can just search for Whisper Quite on their broucher: http://www.symphonylimited.com/Uploads/Brouchers/Domestic%20Master%20Brochure.pdf

Bajaj also has quite operation listed on many of their models.

55

Hi, I am from Chennai, Which air - cooler is best suited for chennai. Also which air cooler has humidity control feature and how effective it will work.

56
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Deepak,

Air Coolers are not good for humid climates. Even with the humidity control feature. The way an air cooler works is by adding moisture to hot dry air. But then in humid climates, the air is already full of moisture (humidity). Humidity control just reduces the amount of moisture added to air. Places in humid climates are uncomfortable not because of heat but mostly because of humidity.

57

Hello Mr. Rakesh. This is Deene. I purchased a new jumbo Jr 22l yesterday. It's making pump sound after 4 to 5 hrs. It's very problem in the midnight. Can I use cool swing even after the water dried and will there be no problem for the pump? Please give me your advice

58
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Once the water dries up, you may not get cool air (depending on the temperature of the room). It is better to switch off the pump when water dries up.

59

Which cooler type best
1. Honey comb
2. Wool wool

60
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Honeycomb is more efficient.

61

Dear Sir,

I am planning to buy a Desert Room Cooler and have in mind Havells Freddo, Bajaj DC 2015 ICON. Could you please help me in choosing a suitable one for 200 sq ft room.

Thank you.
Abhay

62
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Reviews of Bajaj DC 2015 ICON are quite good as compared to Havells models. But frankly they have not provided much data on their website to make a technical comparison and assessment. So I cannot comment much. But Havells has good models.Freddo will be big for your room. In fact Bajaj DC 2015 ICON is also big. You may look at Havells Fresco (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oHWht4 ) ... it should be sufficient for your room size.

63

Sir,
I stay in Gurgaon & living on top floor. what should i buy desert cooler or room cooler.
wheather Symphony Diet 22i_dummy Tower Air Cooler (22 Litres) will be good or not ?

64
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Rahul,

Desert coolers are in general better than room coolers. Symphony is a good brand, but if the cooler would be sufficient for your room or not depends on the size of your room.

65

which one is best fan air cooler or blower? which one is quite?

66
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Air cooler fan should be quiter. Both are good.

67

I stay in a house with roof tiles like the old Portuguese house . can u suggest a aircooler for these type of rooms

68
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is the size of the room and what is your budget for this cooler?

69

hye , Abhishek Jain
please help me to find good humidity control cooler, i live in patiala Punjab , i thought about "Voltas VA-D70 M 70 Litre Desert Cooler" , is it good or not as it cost me 15k, or tell me any other company please. its 300 sq. feet top floor....thank you

70
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Navdeep,

Voltas is a good brand so you can go for Voltas D70M as well. Or you can also look at Havells Freddo series, something like this one: http://amzn.to/2p4QFLU

71

thankyou sir

72

Hi Abhishek,
I stay in Pune. I am searching for a 4 directional swing air cooler , which should have automatic air flow movement in verical as well as horizonal direction. I found many coolers with automatic horizontal directional flow and verical flow can be adjusted manually ( it should also be automatic). Pleaase suggest best cooler for 200 sq. feet room size at top floor.

73
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Sanjay,

Symphony Touch and Cloud series have automatic louver movement in both horizontal and vertical direction. You can look at Symphony Touch 35 (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2p2rnev ) which is for 200 sq ft room. Or Symphony Cloud (which looks very much like an AC).

74

Hello Abhishekji,

I live in Pune and my room size is 11*12 and with 10ft height. I was bit confused with some of the models as which will be best for me between:
Symphony touch 35, Ice Cube i, Hi Cool i.
I inquired about the model Touch 35. The model is feature wise excellent but have some doubts about it:
- Whether it's cooling is better in comparison to other models like diet i 50, Ice cube i and Hi cool i?
- What is the life of its honey comb, whether it is replaceable or not if yes whether it is easily available or not?
- Is there any cell/battery required for it's voice assistance function?
- Whether there is some liquid needed to be refilled for mosquito repellent function, if not then how it'll always work?

75
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Amit,

Symphony Ice Cube i would be a good choice for you. It has functionality to cool using ice cubes which you can use in case the humidity is more. Lately I have also received not so good feedback (just a few though) about Touch 35. But then Symphony as a brand is leader in room air coolers. So you can go for Ice Cube i.

Honey Comb is easily replaceable and you can get it in market. Voice assistance does not need cell/battery, it will take power from the plug point.

Liquid is not needed for mosquito repellent. Usually such appliances use high frequency sound to repel mosquitoes.

76

Thanx Abhishekji.

77

hi can you advice me which cooler is best in Kallakurichi (tamilnadu) my romm size is 16 X 9 Sft H 11 ft.

78
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

You can look at these:

Symphony DiET 12i (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nN7KpL )
Maharaja Arrow+ (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2p47VgF )
Symphony Ice cube i (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oEcS3s )
Maharaja Thunder+ (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oGwtQd )

79

Hi, Can you tell me, which air cooler is best in jalandhar, 225 Sft., I search & find Symphony Siesta 45, but its size is too small. I don't know size matter or not, So please help me & suggest me which is best for me. And please provide any other option near about 8000.

80
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sunil,

Symphony Siesta is good for 350 sq ft. So it should be fine for your room. If you are looking for something less than 8000 then you can look at these:

Symphony Jumbo Jr (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oBrX5t )
Symphony Sumo JR (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2n9M4Ii )

These should be good enough for your room size and will fit in your budget as well. Small size does not matter, the air delivery should be good enough to cover the room.

81

Thanx G, Can u tell me dimension of cooler is including tank or ..............bcoz siesta 45 is 1035 mm (3.39 feet), i am confused.

82
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I am not sure where you got the 1035 number from. Check the dimensions on product page: http://www.symphonylimited.com/product-inner.aspx?ProductID=80

Product width includes tank.

83

Sir, AS per your link height is 1020mm (almost 3.30 feet) I m right

84
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

That is right. It is height.

85

Can desert cooler throw water and damage electronic equipment? How much would the wind and evaporation cool in combination? Is it sufficient for a top floor south facing room?

Also can room cooler be sufficient to muffle all noise from outside, at least from the window where it is placed? Not sure if this will occur as fan seems to do it as it is also circulating air in whole room with its 60db noise..

86
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

It is quite possible that electronic equipments may get damaged due to direct air from an air cooler.

Also an air cooler will have its own noise good enough to muffle all noise from outside. The more powerful the air flow, more is the noise from a cooler.

Also some times coolers are insufficient in cooling rooms that are too hot. So if your top floor room is too hot, then it may not cool it sufficiently.

87

I bought a new crompton air cooler. The air which comes out gives a foul smell like the smell of a fish on first use itself. Upon checking, the sell is from the cooling pad. Is there anyway to get rid of the smell?

88
Prashant Gavali

Hi Abhishek,
I am a resident of Pune city and looking for the air cooler.
Room length 16ft, width 11ft and height 9.5ft.
So please suggest me an appropriate Air cooler model n brand. Please suggest me an appropriate Air conditioner model n brand also

89
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Prashant,

You can look at any of these:

Symphony Jumbo Jr (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nKm579 )
Symphony Sumo JR (Amazon Link; http://amzn.to/2nJWYSc )
Kenstar Maxocool or Maxocool super
Kenstar Wondercool or Wondercool super

Any of these model would be good.

90

Thanks Abhishek for your prompt reply...
Can you suggest me a good AC for same room?

91
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Prashant,

You would need a 1.5 ton AC for your room. How much is your annual usage of AC in hrs (approx daily and monthly data would be sufficient), also how much is your budget for the AC?

92

HI Abhishek, I must say its a real pleasure to read all the advice you have given everyone. I had one request. Can you please put out some more information on these ram duct coolers. Things like how the piping for the ducts can be achived, etc. Also, if the cost of piping goes high, would it justify the cost. Thanks!

93
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Oli,

Currently we do not have detailed research on the subject. Will surely put it once we have that. These ducts are usually like this: or ..... You install the cooler outside the house (usually on the roof) and one end of the duct is attached to the blower of the cooler. The ducts are then brought in the house (to one or multiple rooms). You can also use one single huge cooler for multiple rooms. Cost wise I guess it should still work out much less than an AC (especially if you go for one big one to multiple rooms). But current I do not have details around costing.

94

thanks a lot for adding to the wealth of information present on this web page. Are you aware of any specific persons to contact in Pune ( I'm not sure if plumbers or electricians will undertake any such duct work)
And hopefully one last question. I've tried looking for a ram cooler (if the duct plan does not work out) that has a low water tank alarm and a remote. I'm a little reluctant to go for symphony. I've seen your recommendation for the touch 35. I had it in my room but it did not cool anything. I had kept it near the door and also tested it in the balcony. I then kept my symphony diet 22i beside it and that cooled perfectly (maybe I received a fault model of the touch 35, but I know that water flowed over the pad, so something else was a problem). No doubt that touch series has great features, but my experience, it does not cool effectively. Add to it a higher noise level of the blower even at low speed, I'm not sure how anyone can sleep in that noise.

95
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Oli,

I am sorry, I am not aware of anyone in Pune who can do this job.

Do try Ram Coolers and let us know your feedback on the same. Thanks for sharing your feedback on Symphony.

96

Hi Abhishek,

I am a resident of Noida and looking for a air cooler.
I have used Bajaj cooler and local steel/metal cooler in past.
Bajaj cooler seems to be effective when I purchased it but it's motor got damaged within one year of purchase and afterwards it did not remain effective.

Whereas local coolers were best however bulky, rusted.

I do not like coolers much because of their motor reliability.

I have recently heard about Voltas brand coolers but not aware about it's quality.
I basically have 2 brand in my mind - Symphony and Voltas. And need your suggestion about some options for nonhumid environment even if they belong to different brand.

97
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Both Symphony and Voltas are leading brands of air coolers. So they are certainly good. What is the size of your room?

98

Room size is around 250 sq ft.

99
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

In Symphony, you can look at these:

Symphony Jumbo Jr (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oBrX5t )
Symphony Sumo JR (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2n9M4Ii )

In Voltas you can look at these:

Voltas VE-D60MH or VN-D45M

100

Hi Abhishek, I am from Noida and planning to buy a cooler within 10K budget. The room size is 12*14 and its on 3rd/top floor with direct sunlight heating from roof and side wall. unfortunately we get hard water here in Noida so can you please suggest which cooler would be the best fit for my purpose. In past years I have used tin body desert coolers but the only issue with them is durability as after 2-3 seasons they get stains so looking for some durable stuff which should last atleast 5-6 years.

101
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Are you looking for a room cooler or desert cooler?

102

Actually I am confused in both. Can you suggest which type to buy as guessing you might be aware about weather conditions in Delhi ncr. will go with that which keeps the room more cooler. I mentioned about water quality bcz it will definitely impact the maintenance and would prefer the one which requires less maintenance cost.

103
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Tarun,

In general Desert Coolers are better. And in Delhi if you have access to the roof then you should go for a duct cooler. Duct coolers are usually huge coolers that can sit on top of your roof. The cold air is directed using a duct to one or many rooms. As the cooler is outside, the noise is not much. It takes hot dry air from outside and cools it and thus it becomes much better cold. I have seen such coolers being used in Family in Delhi and they are quite good. Ram Coolers is a one brand that does make such coolers. You can get one made locally as well. But most branded ones sold online are room coolers. And I think desert coolers are much better than room coolers.

104

Hello Abhishek Sir
I am planning to purchase a new cooler for my room which is 12*10 in dimensions and main thing is I m a leaving on top floor of a building so sunlight is directly on ceiling as well as side wall. Temp. is 42-45. I want humidity control cooler. Budget is 7-8k

105
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Tushar,

Which city are you from? I am asking thing because you are asking for humidity control feature. Please note that if you are in a coastal city, then Coolers are not very effective because their working principal is by adding humidity to air. Humidity control can reduce the amount but in a coastal place, as it is humidity will be high and thus a cooler will not be very effective. If that is not the case, then you can look at these:

Symphony HiCool Smart i (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ooTQuD )
Voltas VB-P15MH (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oGqBmi )
or Symphony Touch 35 (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ogFMX1 )

106

I am from Pune city

107
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Then you can look at the models that I suggested.

108

Thank u so much

109
bulla jo rakhe khulla

please tell me difference between cooler and blower, i am planning to buy http://www.orientelectric.com/home-appliances/air-cooler/desert-cooler/tornado-grand-ch6002b
. please suggest

110
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

The difference between fan and blower is that fans produce air flow with less pressure and larger air volume, while blowers produce a relatively higher pressure ratio with the larger air volume flow. So because of more pressure, air from blower can cover a longer distance. Finally the choice depends on what you like: air with more pressure on your body or cooler but low volume environment. Cooling wise the one that covers more distance will cool a larger space faster.

111

hey.. symphony touch 35 cooler is good option for 18*10 ft room? with height of 10 ft? have cross ventilation n humidity is always less than 40% in my area.. n temperature 34 c avg.. and turning on ceiling fan increases or decreases cooler efficiency?

112
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

However, if your ceiling gets direct sunlight. Avoid using ceiling fan as it would throw hot air down, which will not make you feel comfortable.

113
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Symphony Touch 35 would be a great option for 180 sq ft room. Ceiling fans should not impact efficiency or electricity consumption of air coolers. In fact with air cooler, you should not have a need of ceiling fan. But if you do, then there is no harm in using it.

114

Thank You Abhishek Jain :-) I have shortlisted 1) Symphony touch 35 Air Cooler
2) Kenstar Glam 50R Cooler
3) Bajaj Glacier DC 55 DLX Air Cooler
Better cooling efficiency and portability are my priorities.. kindly tell which one should i choose?

115
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Abisheik,

Symphony Touch 35 (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nzRBGI ) is the best cooler with super features (great air filters, etc) and good efficiency.

116

thank you :-) your page helped a lot :-)

117

confused between crompton ozone 75 vs symphony siesta 70....almost same price, same tank capacity. should I believe the brand of crompton in Fans & Pumps
(main component of coolers) or famous name of symphony for cooler as a package ?

118
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Neeraj,

If we go by just user feedback on ecommerce portals, I think Symphony is a better brand. So Symphony Siesta 70 would be a better choice.

119

I think now in market so many good cooler brands are available with good Air Throw / Cooling Efficiency. Here what i seen is No anything about other brands Except Symphony. In my opinion Symphony asthetic look & ad. is good but product is not efficient as far as Air & cooling is concern. Now a days so many good brands in market like ---- Voltas , Cello, Havells , Bluestar etc & many more.

120

hii
we r leaving in pune. now a days temp r comming upto 40+ in afternoon and night also walls becames warm so suggest me good air cooler which has fast cooling capacity.

121
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is the size of the room and what is your budget?

122

Hi.. I am from Hyderabad. Room is < 100sft. Can I go for Desert cooler..? As we don't have a balcony in my master bed room, so It's not possible to place it outside the window. So, my question is Can we place the Desert Cooler near to the window..? Shall we get better cooling than room coolers.. Pl give reply

123
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

You can always get a frame fabricated (SS or Iron frame), that can be fixed outside your window and you can place the cooler on it. If you want to place a cooler inside the room, you can buy any room cooler. In general placing it outside works better, but keeping it inside the room is not too bad either (if your room is well ventilated).

You can go for a room cooler, and keep the doors open for good ventilation.

Hi Sonali,

Air Coolers are not very effective in Mumbai. The climate is humid and air coolers add to humidity. Do you really want to go for an air cooler?

126

then what should i do? i i take AC then it is affect on electric bill. is it good to take AC? but cost also more. now i head some air cooler with humidifier..
shall it work for mumbai?

Air Coolers come with humidity control feature, but that is only to regulate the amount of water that goes on the cooling pads. But still air coolers are based on adding humidity to air to cool warm-dry air. If you still want to go for an air cooler, then you may look at these:

Symphony Touch 35 Air cooler (35-Litre) (White) (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nmn9zM )
Symphony Siesta (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nmx742 )

what is better for my room air cooler or AC ?

129
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

AC would be better in mumbai.

130

but AC is to much costly as compare with air cooler. also electricity bill is matter. what about Air cooler with humidity controller? is it effective?

Hi Sonali,

I cannot guarantee how effective they would be. In general it is not recommended to go for air coolers when climate is humid. Symphony Touch models it seems are better with humidity. You may try this one:

Symphony Touch 35 Air cooler (35-Litre) (White) (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nmn9zM )

Hi Sonali,

You can either go for an AC or an Air Cooler. There is no other option. And I did give you a list of few good Air Coolers in my previous reply. I do not have anything else.

134

ok no problem. just tell me if Air cooler giving 100% efficiency in non humid climate then how much efficient in mumbai compare with that?

136

ok got it. but what about cooler with dehumidify-re? is it helpful in my case?

Hi Sonali,

I have already mentioned that Cooler works by humidifying the air (that is the working principal of a cooler). So they do not have a dehumidify feature (they cannot have it). Humidity control feature minimizes the amount of humidity the cooler can generate, but it still works on humidifying the air. Please do not expect it to do something that a cooler is not designed to do.

Hi - Abhishek. I have an open dining, living and kitchen area about 300-400 sq feet. My entire house would be 700-800 square feet. I want a cooler mainly for the open area but wouldn't mind if something is strong enough for the entire house. I am thinking of purchasing Ram Cooler Duct 780 or 1100. Which one would be better? And with or without honeycomb? I have some concerns about honeycomb as people say they do not cool as well as normal khus. I live in Delhi and on the top first floor - it gets very hot in summers. Please advise. Thanks.
