The basis of this ranking:

  • The basis of this ranking is the data from BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency). BEE data contains yearly electricity consumption of a refrigerator and this information is self reported by the manufacturers. This list does not include our perception of various brands.
  • The list below contains only the top ten ranked refrigerators.
  • Please note Direct Cool refrigerators are single door refrigerators and Frost Free refrigerators are multi door refrigerators.

Buying Guide:

Different types of refrigerators

The basic function of all the refrigerators remains the same. It contains a refrigerant which absorbs the heat from the articles kept inside and transfers it to the surroundings (this is why it is advisable to keep a refrigerator at least 6 inches away from any obstruction).

Refrigerators can be broadly classified into these categories:

  1. Direct Cool Refrigerators – Also called as Single door refrigerator, as these have only one door on them. The freezer is inside the refrigerator. One thing which is attributed to this kind of refrigerators is that they tend to form frost in the freezer in a matter of a few days on continuous use (depends on the usage). In a single door refrigerator, the refrigerant passes near the freezer first to maximise the cooling in the freezer. These refrigerators are available in the capacity only upto 300 Litres and not more than that. So if you are looking to buy a refrigerator with more capacity, single door refrigerators are not for you.
  1. Frost-free refrigerator – As the name suggests, they prevent the formation of frost in the freezer consequently providing convenience of not switching of the refrigerator to remove ice, hence the name ‘frost-free’. They have a small pre-installed heating element which prevents the formation of frost in the freezer. However, this heating element also consumes electricity thus increasing the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. The minimum capacity in this type of refrigerators is 240 Litres. Frost free refrigerators can be further divided into the following types:
    • Top mount refrigerator – In this, the freezer is on the top and the fridge is beneath it. It is very common in household now-a-days. It is popularly known as Double Door Refrigerator.
    • Bottom top refrigerator – Its again a double door refrigerator in which the freezer is below the fridge. It is gaining grounds as the user does not need to bend to put or take out articles in/from the fridge. As the refrigerator is used more often than the freezer in a household, this offers a good alternative to the existing refrigerators. These refrigerators consume more energy than Top mount refrigerator.
    • Multi-door refrigerator – There are more than two doors in a multi-door refrigerator. There are different doors/drawers to access different sections of the same refrigerator. Needless to say, its electricity consumption is higher too.
    • Side by side refrigerator – Side by side refrigerators offer ever more space and flexibility. It usually is double door, one door provides access to the freezer and the other to the fridge. There are some models in this category that have attached water dispenser or ice dispenser wherein one can directly obtain chilled water or ice without opening the door of the refrigerator. Since they provide an altogether separate space of the size equal to the fridge itself, it is needless to say that the electricity consumption is higher, and so is the cost of buying it. The water and ice dispensers may further add to electricity consumption as it may provide some space for leakage of air inside the refrigerator.

In addition to the types mentioned above, there are some technologies which are being introduced in the refrigerators now-a-days:

  • Inverter Technology is the most promising technology available in market these days. This technology not only improves energy efficiency (electricity consumption), but it also keeps temperature more consistent thereby keeping food fresh for long. It saves 20-40% of electricity as compared to regular compressors. To know more about Inverter Technology Refrigerators, click this link: Refrigerators with Inverter technology can help save electricity
  • There are some models of refrigerators in which you are provided with an option to convert the freezer to the refrigerator if and when you have more requirement of storage space in the refrigerator.
  • There is one path-breaking technology which has been doing rounds in the refrigerators lately. It concerns keeping the contents of the refrigerator cool even during a power cut. There are a few variants available in the market depending on the brand concerned. For instance, LG Durachill has a feature of ensuring the coolness of the contents of the freezer for 2 hours during power cut. Another variant, LG Power Cut Evercool is a step further. It keeps the contents of the fridge as well as the freezer cool for 7 hours during power cuts. The prices of these variants are higher than the regular ones.

The green angle

For all the environment-enthusiasts out there, refrigerator manufacturers now-a-days are coming with the eco-friendly variants. The only harm a refrigerator can cause to the environment is through the refrigerant. CFC is the most common refrigerant used now-a-days and it contributes to the greenhouse emission. However R-134 or R600A are viable and eco-friendly alternatives to this. A detailed description of the types of refrigerants can be found in “Comparison of various refrigerants (R-410A, R-22, R-290, R-134A) used for Air Conditioners and Refrigerators”.

Always look for BEE star rating

Bureau of Energy efficiency rates various brands and models of refrigerators on their efficient use of electricity. So always look for star rating. To know more about the BEE star rating program check our link:

Please note that currently BEE star rating is available only for Single Door (Direct Cool) and Double Door (Frost Free) type of models. It is not available for multi door, side-by-side and bottom freezer models. In case you are looking for refrigerator of such type, then the best way to ensure that it is energy efficient is to look for models with inverter technology.

A few important things you should keep in mind

  • The inverter technology, which is available in air conditioners, is also available in refrigerators. It optimises the electricity consumption of the refrigerator by regulating the power supply to the compressor. These are the most electricity-efficient models available in the market both in single door as well as double door.
  • Your eating habits also have an impact on the decision of the right refrigerator for you and your family. Refrigerators today are available also according to the fridge to freezer ratio. (usually 70:30 or 80:20). So if you are a vegetarian, then it is advisable to go for 80:20 model as you would need more space for storing veggies. If you are a non-vegetarian 70:30 model is recommended.
  • People have a tendency of stuffing the refrigerator disregarding the fact that this increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. So it is advisable to store only those articles which might perish otherwise. Avoid buying oversized refrigerators and using refrigerator as an almirah.

How size effects electricity consumption

With increasing prosperity demands of the families in India are increasing and with increasing demand, the size of refrigerators is also increasing. But increased size increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator as well. It is observed (based on BEE data) that with every liter increase in the volume the electricity consumption of refrigerators increase by 0.5-1 units (in the same star rating band). So a 5 star 350 liters refrigerator may consume about 50-100 units per year more than a 5 star 250 liters model. Thus it is very important to pick refrigerator of right size while buying. Also refrigerators are most efficient when they are full (not over loaded). With empty refrigerators you pay more for what you use.

Other factors that impact electricity consumption

Defrost Mode: A direct cool refrigerator that needs manual defrost consumes lesser electricity than auto defrost or frost free refrigerator. A frost-free consumes 30-50% more electricity for same volume and star rating. But a frost-free gives a lot more convenience.

Ice Makers: Many new side-by-side models have ice makers that increase the electricity consumption by 10-15% as the ice dispenser creates a low insulation area, which increases electricity consumption.

More features more electricity consumption: Modern day refrigerators are loaded with features like moisture control, etc. Every feature adds to the electricity consumption (unless it is a feature designed for electricity saving). So choose the features that are helpful for your daily use. Do not just buy a loaded refrigerator just for having a feel of every feature. As every feature comes for extra cost: upfront for buying and on going for use.

Between double door fridge of Samsung and whirlpool, which will you recommend? I liked whirlpool double door though.

2
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Whirlpool is a great brand. One of the top selling brands. You can certainly go for it.

3

Hi Abhishek,

I am planning buy a refrigerator of 250-300L range either from LG or Samsung.

While going through models had finalized Samsung RT28M3954U3 (http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/top-mount-freezer-rt28m3954u3hl/) and LG GL-T292RHDN (http://www.lg.com/in/refrigerators/lg-GL-T292RHDN) where both are 4 Star and had Dual Fridge Technology.

But LG had Inverter Linear Compressor where as Samsung had Digital Inverter Technology so LG is best in this case?

4
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Inverter Linear is a modification of Inverter technology and is certainly good. From an electricity consumption point of view both the models are close. While buying a refrigertor, one also has to look at the storage arrangement inside the refrigerator and if it satisfies ones need or not. I would not say it is the best because it truly depends on one's needs and brand preference. But yes, Linea Inverter is a modification of Inverter technology.

Hi Abhishek,
I am planning buy 250-300Liters range refrigerator either from LG or Samsung. Can you suggest good refrigerator with BEE 4 star rating and Convertible one in 30k range.
In Samsung I am seeing same model number with extension HL and NL. Example RT30M3954R7/HL RT30M3954R7/NL. What is the difference between these?? What HL and NL stands for??

6
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

There is no RT30M3954R7/NL ... there is only RT30M3954R7/HL ... I am not really sure but based on my observation, they use NL for most direct cool refrigerators, HL is for frost free upto 345-350 lts and all bigger ones have TL at the end. But at most places they do not use this notation and usually their model numbers are mentioned as RT30M3954R7

You can look at these:

BrandModelAmazon LinkFlipkart Link
LGGL-T302RPZNhttp://amzn.to/2ypPFqehttp://fkrt.it/FUuvTTuuuN
SAMSUNGRT30M3954R7/HLhttp://amzn.to/2ys2pdPhttp://fkrt.it/FS2ObTuuuN

LG has recently increased their Dual Fridge inventory and most of their 280 lts models are a bit expensive. But I could find only one that had a good deal on Amazon. All others were about 35K. And others that are available are 260 lts in volume.

7

I got to know those HL and NL stands for country names from Samsung live chat. But they didn't gave more data on those.

8

Dear Abhishek,
First of all thanks for all the help & guidance, may your tribe increase.
I am looking for around 475 liters double door & as per this site information, zeroed on Samsung RT49M625ES8/TL model (4 star rated).
However as per the local Dealer, it's an old model & discontinued. He suggested to go for Samsung RT49K6758S9/TL with 476 liters. But it's 3 Star rated. Please suggest around 475 liters capacity with Double door. Budget no constraint.

9
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vasudev,

Samsung still lists RT49M625ES8 on its website: http://www.samsung.com/in/microsite/smart-convertible-refrigerator/5-in-1-range/

Usually they remove models that are discontinued. However, you can also look at Samsung RT47M623ESL which is a BEE 4 star rated 465 lts model. Online this model is available on Vijaysales website, so I hope you should be able to get this.

Or else if you want, you can look at LG BEE 4 star rated models.

10

Hello Abhishek Sir, Our budget is 20,000. we are opting for single door, direct cool model with 5 star BEE rating. Capacity - 200L . Please suggest few models. Energy efficiency and long life is our priority.

Hi Abhishek - I am planning to buy LG GLT292RHDX/2017 (260 liters) 4-star rated double-door convertible (freezer can be converted to fridge) refrigerator which consumes 198 units per year (per statistics stated on sticker). I would like your review of this fridge. The fridge does not find a place in your list of Best Refrigerators in India (in spite of 4-star rating and low consumption). Nor did I find a review in this page. I did not find any review on the Internet (Mouthshut, etc.) or on Flipkart or Amazon sites as well - (Flipkart does not sell it while Amazon has only one offer from one seller at no discounts). The complete absence of information gives rise to questions like Is the fridge worth buying? Is this a flop model? Does it operate per statistics published??, etc. Please publish your review for the benefit of all. An early action shall be much appreciated. Thanks/Sripal

13
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Sripal,

When we do our data collection our first source of truth is data from Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) (link: https://www.beestarlabel.com/Home/Searchcompare ) .... we get the data from BEE and then we match it with what the manufacturers have published (from manufacturers' websites). We do this because a lot of models on BEE are not there on manufacturers' website and vice versa. After the match from BEE and Manufacturers we try to gather some data from ecommerce sites to get some user feedback about the products. If there is a new technology in any model, we try to analyze the efficacy of it, etc. The list of top refrigerators is prepared based on the energy efficiency data from BEE. When people ask for reviews/recommendations, we suggest people based on 1) energy efficiency 2) their budget 3) general feedback about brands, technology and models.

Now this specific model from LG does not appear on BEE's database and that is why it does not appear in our list. It happens a lot that a manufacturer is selling a model and the model number is not there in BEE's list. There are inefficiencies in the process by BEE and manufacturers because of which such things happen (and unfortunately everyone is comfortable with status quo).

Based on the specifications given on LG website, this model looks quite good. Dual Fridge from LG or Convertible model from Samsung are quite successful and good. It gives a lot of convenience in terms of space as well as energy savings. These models have different evaporator for freezer and refrigerator sections thus allowing individual temperature control for different sections. Hitachi also has some such refrigerators with dual evaporator. Also these days LG is enabling most of its appliances with NFC (which is a way to connect any appliance to IOT or Internet of Things). With NFC it enables smart diagnonsis, so if you connect your smart phone with the fridge, in case of problems, the fridge will automatically communicate the defects or issues to the customer care. Inverter technology not only saves electricity, it enables the fridge to be easily connected to solar panels.

Rest of the things in this model are also good: it has Catechin Deodorizer, has Moist Balance Crisper and Humidity Control, and for the storage space you will have to check and judge if it is good for you. I do not think it is a flop model as LG has many models with similar technology and they are quite good (most of the times LG just changes the look and design on the body and renames them as a new model). I will not doubt LG on the numbers because similar models that are registered with BEE have similar numbers. But yes, there is not much user feedback on it. A similar model LG GL-T292RPZX (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/isPvk!NNNN , Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2g3D7xZ ) has lot more feedback which is mostly good. The difference in two models is just in the looks.

14

Why did you include whirlpool refrigerators ? There after sales services are very poor. In my case they haven't even after 10s of calls to their customer centre.

15

Ok Thanks Abhishek bro

Hello Abhiskeh R600a flammable gas it is safe ?? R600a is environment friendly gas ?? It is latest new Refrigerant ?? Which is better r134a or r600a ??

17
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

R600A is highly environment friendly. But it is a hydrocarbon, so it is flammable. But then even LPG is flammable and we do keep LPG cylinders in our homes. R600A is certainly better. It is latest new refrigerant. The whole world is moving towards Hydrocarbons as refrigerants. Already most refrigerators have R600A. And in future all refrigerators will use hydrocarbons.

18

Hi Abhishek ( lg Samsung whirlpool ) all brands refrigerators used for refrigerants which is good save refrigerants

i want to buy french door refrigerator having more then 500 ltr with power saving & less noise. please guide me

23
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is your budget for this fridge? Go for one with inverter technology compressor.

24

Hi Abhi....
We are total 3 member in d family. I m planning to buy a double door refrigerator.
In ur video I found many good information but I m confused between Hitachi and Samsungg. Till now I haven't decided d model. Discussion are on at Company.
Plz suggest d Brand and model also in 300 to 350 Ltrs.

25
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Both Hitachi and Samsung are good. Samsung has a bigger market share and thus larger service network. Although if you are in a big city, you will easily get service from Hitachi as well. But Samsung is a very safe bet.

26
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is your budget for this fridge?

27

Hi Abhishek,
I find really informative site, lot of genuine comment. Can you help with your recommendation for Samsung RT42M553ES8/TL model. have heart RT series has issues with cooling & samsung service is not that great. please suggest

28
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

If you are not confident about this model online then you can try purchasing it offline. Going to a store and checking it is the best way to make sure that you are buying something genuine. Also you can always take it back to the store if it does not work well for you.

29

Thanks Abhishek for suggestion. I tried so. Seems this model is no more available offline. strangely it is available on both flipkart & amozon. but hardly any feedback. :( , what is your call ?

30
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Rohit,

Difficult for me to take a call. I will leave it on you to take a call.

31
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Rohit,

All the frost free (double door) models from Samsung start with RT. There is no separate RT series. And Samsung Frost Free or Double Door models are quite good. I personally own one and I have not seen cooling issues with it. As for service, it varies from place to place because it depends a lot on the humans who are providing the service. And not every human performs the best. So I would suggest that you gather some local feedback on the service. My guess is that you are looking at the only review that is there for this model on Amazon where the individual has complained about cooling and service. Specifications wise this model looks really good and I do not see any issue with it.

32

Hi Abhishek, Thanks for clarification. I have narrowed by search between two model need your expert help to choose between the two model. Can you help the difference which is best. RT39K5538S8 versus RT39M5538S9

33
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Rohit,

Did you mean RT39M5538S8 instead of RT39K5538S8? because I am not able to find RT39K5538S8. Otherwise there is no difference between RT39M5538S8 and RT39M5538S9 other than the color. They are both the same models.

34

Hi Abhishek,

Thanks for maintaining this page. I'm planning to buy single door fridge and confused between Godrej and Samsung. We have used Godrej earlier and there was no issues. But, Samsung has inverter model technology. So, please suggest between Samsung and Godrej.

Samsung Model: RR22M287YU3/N
Godrej Model: RD EDGE PRO 210 CT 3.2

Please suggest.

35
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Rajesh,

Between the two models you have selected, Samsung RR22M287YU3/NL is certainly better because it is a BEE 4 star rated refrigerator as compared to the Godrej model which is BEE 3 star. Electricity consumption of the Samsung model will be less. Also there are many other benefits of inverter technology: 1) Temperature inside the fridge is more consistent which keeps veggies fresh longer. 2) It's startup current is quite less, so it can be very easily connected to UPS/Inverter and it is also a less load on your electricity supply. So in general Inverter technology is better so I would suggest you to go for Samsung model.

36

Hi Abhishek,

Read your answers to the various questioners. Great job indeed.

My 350L LG model purchased in 2004 has conked off and looking for a new fridge.
We are 5 member vegetarian family.
Can you please suggest energy efficient double door fridge model <25K?

Regards
Mahesh Eswaran

37
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Eswaran,

Gettig a good efficient 300-350 lts model in a budget of 25K is difficult. If you can extend your budget to 30K, then you will get some good models.

38

Hi Abhishek,

First of all, thanks for providing such detailed insight about the refrigerator.

I am looking for an economical refrigerator with less than 200 ltr. You have mentioned about the LG, SAMSUNG and Whirlpool as popular brand. However, I found HAIER-HRD-1954BS-R is a very balanced product for me as it is cheap compared to LG/SAMSUNG/Whirlpool with same features. It also provide 1 year warranty on comprehensive; 9 years warranty on compressor.

I stay in a village of West Bengal where the tariff cost is around INR 6/- per unit. Therefore, the product HAIER HRD-1703SR-R/HRD-1703SR-E, Burgundy Red may be good choice.

HRD-1703SR-R/HRD-1703SR-E, Burgundy Red : Amazon Price 10,490/- Claimed electricity consumption - 208 Unit
HRD-1703SMS-R/E Moon Silver : flipkart price 10,500/-
HRD-1954BS-R/HRD-1954BS-E, Brushed Silver : Amazon price 12,398/- Claimed electricity consumption - 151Unit

The Haier refrigerators are comparatively cheaper with same star rating. How those would be reliable in compared to LG/Whirlpool/Samsung?
Are the claimed power consumptions true? Are they included in BEE database?

39
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Shankar,

I do not think Haier is bad when compared to LG/Whirlpool/Samsung. These brands may sell more but on quality, Haier is not too bad. And yes they are there in BEE database. You can check these models (that are listed in BEE database as BEE 4 star):

HI abishek,
Am looking for fridge capacity of 500 ltrs or more, budget is not a issue. Main criteria is more refrigerant space and should be fancy too.
Plus suggest me

41
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Are you looking for a side by side refrigerator or top freezer model? A convertible top freezer model will give you more refrigerator space, but side by side will look more fancy. Also do let me know an approx budget because without it, it is extremely difficult to suggest anything.

42

Hi Abhishek

I am looking for a new double door refrigerator in 250 to 300 lts with price range of around Rs. 25 K. I need small freezer and large space to keep cooked items and vegetables / fruits. We are vegetarians and a small family of 3. Please suggest some best models. Thanks and regards

43
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vani,

I would suggest you to go for a Smart Convertible or Dual Fridge model where you can convert freezer to fidge and vice versa depending on your needs. If you need ice, you can convert it to freezer. But if you do not need ice, you can convert that to fridge and store vegetables and fruits. Also for that I think you will have to increase you budget to about 27K. You can check these models from Samsung:

Samsung RT28M3743BS
Samsung RT28M3743UT
Samsung RT28M3983B3
Samsung RT28M3983D3
Samsung RT28M3983R3

Dear Abhishek,
i was looking for 250 to 300 liters refrigerator. After some research i have decided to go with whirlpool or LG. My doubt is, suppose i have two refrigerator with same star rating, how shall i decide which one is better? Only difference is the type of compressor they have. but since energy rating is same do i consider that both will draw same amount of power? which is best between NEO IF 305 ELT 3S or GL-I302RPZL. Thanks in advance.

45
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Ravi,

Firstly LG GL-I302RPZL is not listed in BEE database so I am not able to find its exact electricity consumption, but LG website states it as BEE 4 star. And if it is a BEE 4 star rated 284 lts model from LG then it would consume about 202 units in a year. Whirlpool NEO IF 305 ELT 3S on the other hand is a BEE 3 star rated model from Whirlpool. Its power consumption is 259 units in a year. A BEE 4 star rated model from Whirlpool NEO DF305 ROY PLUS 4S would be more efficient as it consumes about 185 units a year.

You will have to look at several things while deciding for a good refrigerator. Inverter technology is great at maintaining right temperature to keep food fresh for long. But Whirlpool also has 6th sense sensor technology which tries to achieve the same with a regular compressor. Although I still feel that inverter technology would be better. After that you need to look at other features like space arrangement (for bottles, vegetables, etc), convertible (dual fridge) technology for getting extra fridge space, fast ice feature in case you need ice quickly at times, better air flow system (which would be good in both these brands).

Both LG and Whirlpool are leading brands and are great in terms of technology. So it is not that the difference between the brands would be great so that you can easily single out one of them. You will also have to look at how good their service is in your area. Your local contacts can help you get better idea on that.

46

Dear Abhishek .Kindly guide me to select a model. My budget is 25k.
Which brand are the best Pls let me know with there models numbers.Presently using 190 ltrs Single door Whirlpool model. Interested to go for 2 door .Must be a Energy saving model .How much litres will do if double door
Pls let me know on what basis single or double door is differentiate (use, value, performance)

47
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Abhilash,

The main difference between single and double door is that you do not have to manually defrost (remove ice from freezer) in double door. In case of single door you will have to manually remove ice from the freezer. Otherwise there is not much difference in performance. The other benefit that I can see of double door is that these days there are many models that have convertible freezer. So you can convert freezer to fridge which is usefull if you store more vegetables.

Energy efficiency wise Single door consumes less electricity in general. But then if you need less than 250 lts size then single door is best and if you need more than 250 lts, then double door is better. You can get more than 250 lts in a budget of 25K. Let me know what you need and I can suggest you models accordingly.

48

MY need can be said like this
@ home 3 person ,We are both vegetarian and non vegetarian in days. But mostly prefers vegetarian .I need a fridge that keeps the vegetable and other cooked food items fresh & Hygiene for a day.
I prefer 3 or 4 star rating
My first choice is looking 2 door
Do we really need Stabiliser for fridges now a days ??.pls explain
Kindly share some models number and company make.
I prefer Whirlpool since last 11 years i am using this company.
What type of warranty are there in now a days fridge..

50

Dear Abhishek ji
Still i am confused..
1-Pls let me know any models available with in 25k with 5 star rating.in double door (any brand, model number)
2- Best single door 5 star rating models.??
As i told you earlier i am looking for energy efficiency models.
Above 2 star models are ok or only 5 star will have good efficiency

51
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Abhilash,

Here is my response:

1) There are hardly few BEE 5 star rated double door models as they do not have a good ROI (Return on Investment). And you will not get the BEE 5 star rated ones in your budget of 25K (and that is the reason they are not having a good ROI). BEE 3 star rated models are having good ROI in most cities. In cities that have high electricity tariff (like Mumbai, etc), BEE 4 star rated ones are better. I gave you a list of 4 and 3 star rated models and not 2 star as you have mentioned in your message.

2) If you want single door, then you can look at these:

Thank you Abhishek ji for your support.
One last thing What is your opinion regarding Whirlpool In Single door .
Pls let me know is Whirlpool is the best buy or any other ..
Thanks in advance for the great support and advice

53
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Abhilash,

In terms of popularity LG and Samsung lead in Refrigerators followed by Whirlpool. So Whirlpool is among top 3 brands. Godrej would be next which is an Indian brand. Haier is also doing good these days. So, Whirlpool is certainly a great buy. I cannot say that one is best, because every brand has their own pros and cons. I can just give some market data and perspective. If you have a preference for Whirlpool (because of past experience), then you MUST go with Whirlpool because it is a great brand. Whirlpool is good in single door as well.

54

Hi, I am looking to buy Bosch 454L model KDN53XI301. The BEE star rating is only 2, however it is an inverter model. Should I go for it as I have mixed reviews about Bosch refrigerators. I hear that recently many are buying Bosch refrigerators and there are no issues, however, I see only mixed reviews online.

55
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Jay,

Inverter Technology makes a model likely to be an energy efficient model, but does not guarantee that the model will be energy efficient. That is because compressor is only one of the components in a refrigerator and the whole design has to be energy efficient.

Bosch is a good brand and has great german technology, but in this case I would not suggest you to go for a BEE 2 star rated refrigerator. We usually recommend BEE 3 star and above for refrigerators. BEE 3 star rated is most ideal value for money in most cases. In case the tariff is high (like in cities like Mumbai), then BEE 4 star rated ones become more value for money.

You will not have issues in the refrigerator because it is BEE 2 star. But then in terms of electricity consumption, it will not be very efficient.

56

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Appreciate the bijli bachao awareness and the efforts.

57

Hi Abishek, I plan to buy Whirlpool 283D Proton 3 Door Refrigerator, is it advisable to buy that model, they say it consumes only power watt of a 20 Watt CFL bulb, if so what will be power consumption for a year and how about compressor and its Warranty. Kindly Reply. Thanks Prasanna

58
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Firstly, watt is just a rate of electricity consumption. Trying to identify power consumption with just watt is similar to finding out distance traveled just by knowing speed. I cannot tell how much distance a car travels just by knowing that it is running at 100 km/hr.

Now 20 Watts in 24 hours consumes 20 x 24 = 480 Wh or 0.48 kWh or 0.48 units. And in 365 days it will consume 365 x 0.48 = 175.2 kWh or 175.2 units. But all depends on how many hours do you run the 20 watt CFL bulb.

Otherwise Whirlpool is a great brand and the model you have chosen is good. It is not rated on BEE parameters, so I cannot tell you the electricity consumption, but in general whirlpool models are quite efficient. Their 6th sense sensor technology optimizes power consumption by optimally keeping temperatures optimized in various zones of the fridge. Temperature optimization also helps keeping food fresh for long. It also has several technologies like Moisture retention, Microblock (to block bacterial growth) to keep food fresh. Compressor in the refrigerator is regular compressor (not inverter technology).

Hi Abhishek,
I am looking for a double door, approx 290-330 ltr capacity and budget 25-35K refrigerator. As I am vegetarian looking for a large vegetable tray and smaller freezer. I liked the Whirlpool it's capacity was smaller than Samsung yet it looked bigger. Maybe because Samsung has a huge freezer. But. I thin k Whirlpool doesn't have an inverter technology.

Please suggest which would be a value for money model out of below 3. Please feel free to suggest others too.
Samsung 321 L 3 Star Frost-free Refrigerator (RT34K3753S9/HL , Refined Inox)
LG 308 L 3 Star Frost-Free Double Door Refrigerator (GL-I322RPZY, Shiny Steel)
LG 308 L 4 Star Frost-Free Double Door Refrigerator (GL-I322RPZL, Shinny Steel)

thanks

Hi Prachi,

Firstly I would like to say that Inverter Technology models are most likely energy efficient, but that does not mean that non inverter models are not energy efficient. In fact Whirlpool has many BEE 4 star rated models that do not have inverter technology. But in general inverter technology is better in long term and it also has much better handling of temperature. But I would NOT say that the Whirpool models that are BEE 4 star rated are bad just because they do not have inverter technology. There are pros and cons of everything.

Now coming to freezer/fridge ratio, I think the best models are the convertible technology models where you have dual evaporator and thus you can individually manage temperature of fridge and freezer and so you can converter a freezer to fridge by decreasing its temperature. It gives extra space just in case you need more fridge space and you can convert it to freezer in case you need ice. LG and Samsung have such models.

Now brands do not provide specifications of freezer to fridge ratio, nor do the mention the dimensions of individual sections, so it will be very difficult for me to suggest you the one that has smaller freezer. But I can confidently say that the convertible ones are great (as I myself use one).

Among the 3 you have listed, I think Samsung convertible model would be good. In LG you can look at LG GL-T322RPZX (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2wfIgZW , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/080UV!NNNN ) which is a Dual Fridge model (Convertible). Godrej also has inverter technology models so you can also check Godrej RT EON 290 SD 4.4 which claims to have a large vegetable tray. But Godrej model is not convertible. And it is also a BEE 4 star rated model.

61

Thanks, Abhishek. I am going with Samsung convertible model as suggested.

Hi Abhishek,

I have shortlisted following 321 ltr models in Samsung.
RT34M3743/BS/HL/2017
RT34K3943S8/HL/2017
RT34K3953S9.
Pls let me know which model should I go for. Your rank wise preference.
Request your response urgently as i need to finalize today.
Thanks.

Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vikas,

RT34K3953S9 is old model and Samsung has moved it in support mode on their website. Which means they are not actively marketing it right now. The other two models are exactly the same with the difference just in the handle. One has recess handle the other has a metallic bar handle. Rest all the things are exactly the same. You can go for any one of the 2017 models (the 1st two you have listed).

64

Thanks Abhishek for your quick support.
Hope both these shortlisted models are ok.

65
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Yes they are.

66

I want to purchase Samsung RT30K3753S9 3star how much time does it take to get converted from fridge to freezer or freezer to fridge and power consumption

67
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Chethan,

The time to convert will depend on the temperature that you have kept the freezer at and the temperature you plan to keep the fridge at. Samsung gives multiple temperature options for both fridge and freezer. There is no heater to quickly heat the freezer to the fridge temperature. If your freezer at -23 degrees and fridge at 7 degrees, it will take some time (depending on the heat in your kitchen) to come from -23 to 7 degrees.

68

Awesome wealth of inputs on this forum. Can you help me decide on an upgrade version. I currently use a Samsung single door 190L. I need a double door for larger freezer space being a non-vegetarian. But I would like to continue with the same fresh food space as in 190L. Preferable budget is 30K but that is not really a constraint. Willing to pay more for better. Currently considering Samsung 275L, 253L, Whirlpool FP463D, etc. I would prefer Inverter model for consistent temperature. Is it really worth paying more for 5 star? Thanks in advance.

69
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Ramesh,

Choice of star rating depends a lot on your electricity costs. At current electricity costs in most places in India, BEE 5 star rated models do not have a good ROI. If you are in a place like Mumbai, B'lore, Hyd, etc where tariffs are high at last slabs and your electricity consumption (overall) is on a higher side, then BEE 4 star rated refrigerators make a great sense. Otherwise BEE 3 star rated refrigerators provide a good ROI in almost all places in the country. I would not suggest going for lower than 3 star.

If you want to go for a model with Inverter Technology then Samsung would be a better choice. Whirlpool models do not have inverter technology. Also if you want 190 lts space for fridge, then 275 lts would be better because 253 lts model have about 180 lts for refrigerator and 50-55 lts for freezer. So 275 lts will have what you want. Here are some models that you can look at:

Thanks a lot for your clarification. I think 253L should be ok for me too since the 190L model also gave only 180L space. Is there any other difference between 253L and 275L other than just the space difference?

Hi. I was actually looking for a new refrigerator but I'm not sure whether I should buy double door or side-by-side. Can you please guide me through it. I choiced Hair hrf 618ss side by side frost free refrigerator but I do not know about its energy consumption. My budget is 50k. I wouldn't mind a double door but I fancy a side by side door. So can you pls tell me the best economic n energy efficient options for both. Capacity 500 lt +/- 50 lt
Thank you.

75
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Shilpa,

Side by Side refrigerators are not rated by BEE and manufacturers usually do not publish energy consumption data unless it is made mandatory by the government. All I can say is that if the side-by-side refrigerator is a inverter technology refrigerator, then there is a high probability that it would have less electricity consumption. But then those models would also be expensive and I do not thing you will be able to get one in your budget.

I am also not able to find any energy efficient refrigerator of about 500 lts in a budget of 50K. The cheapest I could find is LG GL-T522GNSX (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/4BpoJTuuuN ) ... which is a good energy efficient refrigerator.

Hi,

I am planning to buy new refrigerator, below are my requirements :

Hi Abhishek,
I am looking to buy refrigerator in 275 to 325 ltr capacity. Price around 20 to 25K. Is freezer down model is good ?
Pls suggest good models in regular freezer up .
Also Pls suggest good models in regular down also .
Which is better ?

79
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vikas,

Both are good. However, choice depends on your preference. In general it is better to go for a model with inverter technology compressor. However, that does not mean that others are bad. But the models with inverter technology compressor will be expensive (above 29K). Even the non inverter ones that are good would cost about 26-27K.

The freezer down models are not rated by BEE so energy consumption data for them is not available. But Freezer up models are rated by BEE, so I can easily suggest some based on energy consumption and features.

80

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you updating this information, I don't have any question but thought to thank you for answering people's doubt.

Stay healthy happy and blessed.

81
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Thanks. I am glad that you found the information useful.

82

Hello sir, I recently bought a new refrigerator, Haier 1954BS-R, which is also listed in your article. It claims to have 151 units yearly consumption. The back sticker says Rated Input Power is 90 watts. If I do the math of 90x24, it is 2+ units a day. Then how come BEE rating says 151 annual units?

83
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Ravi,

The major portion of the electricity consumption is for the compressor. And compressor does not remain on always. There is a thermostat which shuts of the compressor when the temperature set has been attained. So the calculation does not work like how you have mentioned. It will depend a lot on the load on the refrigerator and the thermostat setting. Compressor will go on and off.

84

Okay, so it is just like the AC. Thank you, I get it. Had a follow up question. The refrigerator that I bought says it should be defrosted every 3 days. I can see the ice buildup in there in just that many days. Is it truly important to defrost it every 3 days? If not, how often should it be defrosted? Thank you.

85
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Yes, working of AC and refrigerator is the same. It is just that AC operates on a big room and refrigerator operates on a small space.

Ice accumulation can reduce the cooling efficiency of the refrigerator. So it is better that it is removed regularly. If the refrigerator has 3 days mentioned on it, then it will be better if it is done every 3 days.

86

I am looking for a >500 litre Refrigerator capacity. What is your opinion on Bosch Series 4 and Side-by-Side Refirgerator ?

Also, could you please suggest a refrigerator which has features similar or near to this one but is economical -
http://www.jci-hitachi.in/productdetail/Made-In-Japan-MIJ

Thanks !

87
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Bosch as a brand is a good brand and really good in their technology. However, they do not rank very high in terms of energy efficiency in refrigerators. The best they have is a BEE 3 star rated refrigerator. By the way I could not find a model with volume greater than 500 in series 4. Series 6 has more than 500 lts models. But most of them are BEE 2 star. I would suggest at least BEE 3 star rating for refrigerators.

The Hitachi model you have selected is a 6 door model. I have not seen a model similar to that in any of the brands. Hitachi is the only one. So if you want something similar then you will have to go for that only.

Side by Side models are good if: 1) they have inverter technology compressor 2) Better not to have a ice/water dispenser. Ice/Water dispenser are useful but then they are source of leakage of heat and can cause higher electricity consumption. They are not rated by BEE and manufacturers do not provide much information on their electricity consumption. LG, Samsung, Hitachi, Panasonic, Bosch (Series 6), Haier have inverter technology compressor in their models. LG and Samsung are market leaders in refrigerators along with Whirlpool. They have large service network and they are most popular brands. Hitachi, Panasonic and Bosch are also really good in technology. Hitachi performs better on energy efficiency as well in general.

Another important thing to look for is: different evaporator for fidge and freezer. Usually side by side refrigerator should have that. It helps in controlling temperature of fridge and freezer separately. In many such models you can convert freezer to fridge if needed. However, if you are going for side by side model then I assume your requirement of freezer is high because side by side models have big freezer compartment. If it is not then it will be better to go for top mounted model with temperature control of the freezer.

88

Well i owned bosch after 1 year there compressor gave up due to small fluctuation and well there service is pathetic. They only claim to be good but are not so better go with LG samsung

89

Hello there,
We r a family of 7 and wanna buy a new fridge with a 450 ltr to 550 ltr capacity.
I m confused between Haier, Hitachi and LG.
Suggest me with the proper model and benefits.
Thanks

90
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Paras,

Firstly, in our data collection, we only take those models that are registered with BEE (bureau or energy efficiency a government of India body) as our source. We then try to find if the models registered are being sold by the brand or not. Also I would only suggest models with BEE 3 star rating and above for energy efficiency (saving electricity).

Now none of the Haier models registered with BEE with BEE 3 star rating and above and size between 450 and 550 lts are being sold by Haier in market. So I would eliminate Haier from the choices.

Between LG and Hitachi, both the brands are good, Hitachi is considered as premium in (refrigeration and air conditioning) and their models are expensive. They are great on technology, but are expensive. Also you need to make sure that their service is good in your area. Both these brands use inverter technology compressor which is good for energy efficiency, keeping food fresh for long time (better temperature management) and in general better electricals. LG in general is more value for money brand (for most appliances). They have a larger service network as well, but again you will have to gather some local feedback to see how their service is in your area. But in LG you can get a BEE 4 star model and Hitachi are only BEE 3 star ones. So electricity saving would be better in LG.

Then finally you will have to look at your own requirements and space management inside the fridge. You will have to make sure that the kind of things you want to keep can fit in the fridge. Here are some models you can look at:

Seems samsung hasn't bothered with putting out many bottom freezer models. My three criteria for a fridge are 1. Bottom freezer, 2. 86cm wide slot for it to fit in, 3. Inverter. And with that all LG, samsung models are out :(
I am left with two models from hitachi, one bosch(non inverter) and a panasonic(that you have already added to your recommended list) NR-BY608X. The model you listed is the latest 2017 updated version too that i don't seem to be able to get much information on. So when it comes down to that panasonic model versus the hitachi(R-WB550PND2) which do you recommend based on service etc? Thanks

92
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

But please note, service may vary from place to place and a general perception may not be very helpful. Check with people around you (in your city) who have used Hitachi in the past to get better feedback.

93
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Arvind,

In general I have not heard great feedback on Hitachi's service. Panasonic is actually better. So I would say Panasonic would eb a better choice. Which model are you not getting information on?

94

Hi Abhishek,
Thank you for the fast response. The model i was trying to get information on is the Panasonic NR-BY608X.
If u visit the panasonic india page for that model(http://www.panasonic.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/refrigerators/frost-free/nr-by608x.html) it explains that it is replacing the NR-BY602 model. That model i have seen in use and i agree that Panasonic is definitely the brand to recommend. Having said that Hitachi is pretty solid too and i have heard good things. But for available space the panasonic is definitely larger. And having pioneered inverter technology I'm happy to go with Panasonic. But i don't see the 2017 model mentioned above listed on amazon and i cant find reviews either.

95
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

608 is not listed on amazon. Sometime it takes time for a model to come on Amazon. Mostly likely you can get this model in Vijay Sales or any other electronic store. I can see it on Vijay Sales website. However, difficult to get user reviews as the model is new.

96

I forgot to mention I'm shopping from Bangalore. Don't think Vijay sales has a store here. But i found a dealer(Modern World) that says they have the newer model available and on display. Was one of the four recommended dealers by Panasonic. Will go check it out in person. From the looks of it, this is the improved version of the 602. Thanks again for the replies. They carry Hitachi too so I will get to compare. Will post after I see them in person.

97

SAMSUNG-RT30M3425S8/HL = 275.00 lts = 159.00 units

159 units per year.

Whirlpool has a 3 door refrigerator - Whirlpool 240 L Frost Free Triple Door Refrigerator  (240L FP 263D PROTTON). it claims it uses less power than a CFL equivalent of 60 Watts. it has mixed reviews on mouthshut / amazon / Flipcart. Have you researched this fridge from usability/durability of internal parts & compressor/ structural engineering etc ? Pl. share findings, specifically how does its power consumption compare with a BEE 4 star / 5 star. Could you also suggest any other brand / model in that spec area, would like to buy one in the next 7/10 days. Whirlpool also advises one to change filters (deodizer / freshness) every six months; that's an additional cost. can one manage (with out affecting the expected performance of clean and fresh veggies /fruits) with out changing filters? Thanks.

100
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Sanjay,

60 watts if used for 24 hours would consume 60 x 24 = 1440 Wh or 1.44 units. 1.44 units for 365 days would be 1.44 x 365 = 525.6 units which is a lot for 240 lts refrigerator. A CFL equivalent of 60 watts regular bulb would be 15 Watts (if that is what they mean). With 15 watts the annual consumption comes to 131 units. I doubt it would be 131 units because the most efficient models of this size consume about 190 units a year. So the data is confusing.

We have not researched this fridge from usability/durability of internal parts & engineering.

Filters usually require periodic changes and it would be better to do as the manufacturer recommends.

can you please discuss the types of refrigerator inverter? Also, can sudden fluctuation of energy (due to strong thunder/lighthning) can it break the inverter? Thank you

Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What type of refrigerator inverter do you want to know about? Lightning on the wire can be very dangerous and in fact fluctuation of energy due to lightning can damage any appliance and no amount of protection can help it. Only smaller surges due to regular fluctuations can be protected using a surge protector.

Hi Gourav,

Size depends on your usage of the refrigerator. I have a family of similar size and I have a 320 lts model. However, if you go for a higher size model, then in the same budget you cannot get higher star rated model. You can get BEE 5 star rated models in 275 lts, but then if you go for a bigger size then at best you will get BEE 3 or 4 star rated models. If you want BEE 5 star rated models then Samsung RT30M3425S8/HL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2o1sH3K , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/y8870!NNNN ) would be a great choice.

I am glad that you find the research useful. As of now we have not done research on Mixer Grinders. The other appliances keep us overwhelmed (with all the research and Q&As). Mixer Grinders are in our to do list and hopefully we will cover them soon.

HI Abhishek
We have currently 346 Panasonic5* double door refrigerator . However we need higher /double capacity fridge with following requirement , can you suggest good model in side by side design .
Side by side design , Inverter technology , No French door , Capacity more than 700 Liters, water dispenser and Ice dispenser is NOT required , Showcase door NOT required . Budget below 100K . We have seen , Samsung 767 liters http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/side-by-side-rs62k6007s8tl/ & http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/food-showcase-rh80j81323m/ . However price of 868 liters on higher side. Can you suggest any other company's side by side models . Is any model having 80/20 ratio for fridge /freezer rather than 60/40 ratio in side by side design.

I think the models you have selected from Samsung would be your best choice. Most brands do not have side by side models of that size. In general brands hardly have model with capacity more than 700 lts.

Hi Abhishek, I have gone through your article, video and questions from the fellow friends which were very helpful. I am planning to buy a 2 door refrigerator with capacity of between 250-300. I have shortlisted 2 models but confused to make the final decision among those, this is where I would need your expert advice.
The 2 shortlisted models are
Samsung 275 L 3 Star Frost-free Refrigerator (RT30K3723S8 , Elegant Inox) - http://www.amazon.in/Samsung-Frost-free-Refrigerator-RT30K3723S8-Elegant/dp/B01EHYF52W/ref=pd_sbs_265_11?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6EKGDSHHW0TARTV4EF6ZWhirlpool 292 L Frost Free Double Door Refrigerator (NEO DF305 PRM ALPHA STEEL(3S), Alpha Steel, 2017) 3star model - http://www.amazon.in/Whirlpool-NEO-IF305-ALPHA-STEEL/dp/B01LXAMFA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497113448&sr=8-1&keywords=whirlpool+292+l+frost+free+double+door+refrigeratorthe confusion is that though whirlpool comes with the traditional compressor but has good energy efficiency whereas Samsung comes with the latest technology of inverter based compressor but has energy efficiency slightly(248) better than whirlpool (259). whirlpool has more capacity(292 litres) as compared to Samsung(275) and is cheaper.
Overall which one has better features and which one should I prefer?

Hi Yash,

Whirlpool is energy efficient but I still feel Samsung has better technology. Inverter Technology certainly helps in keeping temperature consistent. Secondly the samsung model is a convertible refrigerator which means it has dual fan. So there is a different evaporator for fridge and freezer. Which means you have control to set temperature of fridge and freezer separately. Which is another great advantage. And if you have power cuts then inverter technology can easily connect to a power inverter as well. So I think Samsung inverter tech refrigerator is better.

Dear Abhishek, I had been using Kelvinator 200 Ltrs for over 20 yrs, with no problems what so ever. Then I switched to LG Double Door. After 10 yrs the compressor and cooling fan have given up. Cost of replacement, Rs 8000/- Firstly, should I go in for repairs or buy a new fridge ? Secondly, which brand has more long lasting compressor ? Choice is double door with inverter tech, 300 - 350 Ltrs. Can consider Hitachi, Panasonic, etc, too, provided after sale service is good. Like to avoid Chinese ( all products) as I consider it hostile country. Sorry for the bias, but am a die hard fauji. Request suggest latest suitable models. Many Thanks. Col S J Singh

Hello Col Singh,

These days most brands are giving 10 years warranty on the compressor (mostly for inverter tech compressor). So that should not be a big problem. In terms of efficiency, Hitachi has better models, so you can look at these:

Hitachi R-H350PND4K (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/NLCerTuuuN )
Hitachi R-SG31BPND (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2rid8Fz , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/NKJ9ZTuuuN )

If you want more energy efficient ones then you can look at these from LG and Samsung:

Modern refrigerators are much more electricity saving that the ones you purchased 10 years back.
