The basis of this ranking:

  • The basis of this ranking is the data from BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency). BEE data contains yearly electricity consumption of a refrigerator and this information is self reported by the manufacturers. This list does not include our perception of various brands.
  • The list below contains only the top ten ranked refrigerators.
  • Please note Direct Cool refrigerators are single door refrigerators and Frost Free refrigerators are multi door refrigerators.

Buying Guide:

Different types of refrigerators

The basic function of all the refrigerators remains the same. It contains a refrigerant which absorbs the heat from the articles kept inside and transfers it to the surroundings (this is why it is advisable to keep a refrigerator at least 6 inches away from any obstruction).

Refrigerators can be broadly classified into these categories:

  1. Direct Cool Refrigerators – Also called as Single door refrigerator, as these have only one door on them. The freezer is inside the refrigerator. One thing which is attributed to this kind of refrigerators is that they tend to form frost in the freezer in a matter of a few days on continuous use (depends on the usage). In a single door refrigerator, the refrigerant passes near the freezer first to maximise the cooling in the freezer. These refrigerators are available in the capacity only upto 300 Litres and not more than that. So if you are looking to buy a refrigerator with more capacity, single door refrigerators are not for you.
  1. Frost-free refrigerator – As the name suggests, they prevent the formation of frost in the freezer consequently providing convenience of not switching of the refrigerator to remove ice, hence the name ‘frost-free’. They have a small pre-installed heating element which prevents the formation of frost in the freezer. However, this heating element also consumes electricity thus increasing the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. The minimum capacity in this type of refrigerators is 240 Litres. Frost free refrigerators can be further divided into the following types:
    • Top mount refrigerator – In this, the freezer is on the top and the fridge is beneath it. It is very common in household now-a-days. It is popularly known as Double Door Refrigerator.
    • Bottom top refrigerator – Its again a double door refrigerator in which the freezer is below the fridge. It is gaining grounds as the user does not need to bend to put or take out articles in/from the fridge. As the refrigerator is used more often than the freezer in a household, this offers a good alternative to the existing refrigerators. These refrigerators consume more energy than Top mount refrigerator.
    • Multi-door refrigerator – There are more than two doors in a multi-door refrigerator. There are different doors/drawers to access different sections of the same refrigerator. Needless to say, its electricity consumption is higher too.
    • Side by side refrigerator – Side by side refrigerators offer ever more space and flexibility. It usually is double door, one door provides access to the freezer and the other to the fridge. There are some models in this category that have attached water dispenser or ice dispenser wherein one can directly obtain chilled water or ice without opening the door of the refrigerator. Since they provide an altogether separate space of the size equal to the fridge itself, it is needless to say that the electricity consumption is higher, and so is the cost of buying it. The water and ice dispensers may further add to electricity consumption as it may provide some space for leakage of air inside the refrigerator.

In addition to the types mentioned above, there are some technologies which are being introduced in the refrigerators now-a-days:

  • Inverter Technology is the most promising technology available in market these days. This technology not only improves energy efficiency (electricity consumption), but it also keeps temperature more consistent thereby keeping food fresh for long. It saves 20-40% of electricity as compared to regular compressors. To know more about Inverter Technology Refrigerators, click this link: Refrigerators with Inverter technology can help save electricity
  • There are some models of refrigerators in which you are provided with an option to convert the freezer to the refrigerator if and when you have more requirement of storage space in the refrigerator.
  • There is one path-breaking technology which has been doing rounds in the refrigerators lately. It concerns keeping the contents of the refrigerator cool even during a power cut. There are a few variants available in the market depending on the brand concerned. For instance, LG Durachill has a feature of ensuring the coolness of the contents of the freezer for 2 hours during power cut. Another variant, LG Power Cut Evercool is a step further. It keeps the contents of the fridge as well as the freezer cool for 7 hours during power cuts. The prices of these variants are higher than the regular ones.

The green angle

For all the environment-enthusiasts out there, refrigerator manufacturers now-a-days are coming with the eco-friendly variants. The only harm a refrigerator can cause to the environment is through the refrigerant. CFC is the most common refrigerant used now-a-days and it contributes to the greenhouse emission. However R-134 or R600A are viable and eco-friendly alternatives to this. A detailed description of the types of refrigerants can be found in “Comparison of various refrigerants (R-410A, R-22, R-290, R-134A) used for Air Conditioners and Refrigerators”.

Always look for BEE star rating

Bureau of Energy efficiency rates various brands and models of refrigerators on their efficient use of electricity. So always look for star rating. To know more about the BEE star rating program check our link:

Please note that currently BEE star rating is available only for Single Door (Direct Cool) and Double Door (Frost Free) type of models. It is not available for multi door, side-by-side and bottom freezer models. In case you are looking for refrigerator of such type, then the best way to ensure that it is energy efficient is to look for models with inverter technology.

A few important things you should keep in mind

  • The inverter technology, which is available in air conditioners, is also available in refrigerators. It optimises the electricity consumption of the refrigerator by regulating the power supply to the compressor. These are the most electricity-efficient models available in the market both in single door as well as double door.
  • Your eating habits also have an impact on the decision of the right refrigerator for you and your family. Refrigerators today are available also according to the fridge to freezer ratio. (usually 70:30 or 80:20). So if you are a vegetarian, then it is advisable to go for 80:20 model as you would need more space for storing veggies. If you are a non-vegetarian 70:30 model is recommended.
  • People have a tendency of stuffing the refrigerator disregarding the fact that this increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator. So it is advisable to store only those articles which might perish otherwise. Avoid buying oversized refrigerators and using refrigerator as an almirah.

How size effects electricity consumption

With increasing prosperity demands of the families in India are increasing and with increasing demand, the size of refrigerators is also increasing. But increased size increases the electricity consumption of the refrigerator as well. It is observed (based on BEE data) that with every liter increase in the volume the electricity consumption of refrigerators increase by 0.5-1 units (in the same star rating band). So a 5 star 350 liters refrigerator may consume about 50-100 units per year more than a 5 star 250 liters model. Thus it is very important to pick refrigerator of right size while buying. Also refrigerators are most efficient when they are full (not over loaded). With empty refrigerators you pay more for what you use.

Other factors that impact electricity consumption

Defrost Mode: A direct cool refrigerator that needs manual defrost consumes lesser electricity than auto defrost or frost free refrigerator. A frost-free consumes 30-50% more electricity for same volume and star rating. But a frost-free gives a lot more convenience.

Ice Makers: Many new side-by-side models have ice makers that increase the electricity consumption by 10-15% as the ice dispenser creates a low insulation area, which increases electricity consumption.

More features more electricity consumption: Modern day refrigerators are loaded with features like moisture control, etc. Every feature adds to the electricity consumption (unless it is a feature designed for electricity saving). So choose the features that are helpful for your daily use. Do not just buy a loaded refrigerator just for having a feel of every feature. As every feature comes for extra cost: upfront for buying and on going for use.

Here is a short video for tips to buy the best refrigerator in India

I am looking for a >500 litre Refrigerator capacity. What is your opinion on Bosch Series 4 and Side-by-Side Refirgerator ?

Also, could you please suggest a refrigerator which has features similar or near to this one but is economical -
http://www.jci-hitachi.in/productdetail/Made-In-Japan-MIJ

Thanks !

Bosch as a brand is a good brand and really good in their technology. However, they do not rank very high in terms of energy efficiency in refrigerators. The best they have is a BEE 3 star rated refrigerator. By the way I could not find a model with volume greater than 500 in series 4. Series 6 has more than 500 lts models. But most of them are BEE 2 star. I would suggest at least BEE 3 star rating for refrigerators.

The Hitachi model you have selected is a 6 door model. I have not seen a model similar to that in any of the brands. Hitachi is the only one. So if you want something similar then you will have to go for that only.

Side by Side models are good if: 1) they have inverter technology compressor 2) Better not to have a ice/water dispenser. Ice/Water dispenser are useful but then they are source of leakage of heat and can cause higher electricity consumption. They are not rated by BEE and manufacturers do not provide much information on their electricity consumption. LG, Samsung, Hitachi, Panasonic, Bosch (Series 6), Haier have inverter technology compressor in their models. LG and Samsung are market leaders in refrigerators along with Whirlpool. They have large service network and they are most popular brands. Hitachi, Panasonic and Bosch are also really good in technology. Hitachi performs better on energy efficiency as well in general.

Another important thing to look for is: different evaporator for fidge and freezer. Usually side by side refrigerator should have that. It helps in controlling temperature of fridge and freezer separately. In many such models you can convert freezer to fridge if needed. However, if you are going for side by side model then I assume your requirement of freezer is high because side by side models have big freezer compartment. If it is not then it will be better to go for top mounted model with temperature control of the freezer.

Hello there,
We r a family of 7 and wanna buy a new fridge with a 450 ltr to 550 ltr capacity.
I m confused between Haier, Hitachi and LG.
Suggest me with the proper model and benefits.
Thanks

Hi Paras,

Firstly, in our data collection, we only take those models that are registered with BEE (bureau or energy efficiency a government of India body) as our source. We then try to find if the models registered are being sold by the brand or not. Also I would only suggest models with BEE 3 star rating and above for energy efficiency (saving electricity).

Now none of the Haier models registered with BEE with BEE 3 star rating and above and size between 450 and 550 lts are being sold by Haier in market. So I would eliminate Haier from the choices.

Between LG and Hitachi, both the brands are good, Hitachi is considered as premium in (refrigeration and air conditioning) and their models are expensive. They are great on technology, but are expensive. Also you need to make sure that their service is good in your area. Both these brands use inverter technology compressor which is good for energy efficiency, keeping food fresh for long time (better temperature management) and in general better electricals. LG in general is more value for money brand (for most appliances). They have a larger service network as well, but again you will have to gather some local feedback to see how their service is in your area. But in LG you can get a BEE 4 star model and Hitachi are only BEE 3 star ones. So electricity saving would be better in LG.

Then finally you will have to look at your own requirements and space management inside the fridge. You will have to make sure that the kind of things you want to keep can fit in the fridge. Here are some models you can look at:

Seems samsung hasn't bothered with putting out many bottom freezer models. My three criteria for a fridge are 1. Bottom freezer, 2. 86cm wide slot for it to fit in, 3. Inverter. And with that all LG, samsung models are out :(
I am left with two models from hitachi, one bosch(non inverter) and a panasonic(that you have already added to your recommended list) NR-BY608X. The model you listed is the latest 2017 updated version too that i don't seem to be able to get much information on. So when it comes down to that panasonic model versus the hitachi(R-WB550PND2) which do you recommend based on service etc? Thanks

6
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

But please note, service may vary from place to place and a general perception may not be very helpful. Check with people around you (in your city) who have used Hitachi in the past to get better feedback.

7
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Arvind,

In general I have not heard great feedback on Hitachi's service. Panasonic is actually better. So I would say Panasonic would eb a better choice. Which model are you not getting information on?

8

Hi Abhishek,
Thank you for the fast response. The model i was trying to get information on is the Panasonic NR-BY608X.
If u visit the panasonic india page for that model(http://www.panasonic.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/refrigerators/frost-free/nr-by608x.html) it explains that it is replacing the NR-BY602 model. That model i have seen in use and i agree that Panasonic is definitely the brand to recommend. Having said that Hitachi is pretty solid too and i have heard good things. But for available space the panasonic is definitely larger. And having pioneered inverter technology I'm happy to go with Panasonic. But i don't see the 2017 model mentioned above listed on amazon and i cant find reviews either.

9
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

608 is not listed on amazon. Sometime it takes time for a model to come on Amazon. Mostly likely you can get this model in Vijay Sales or any other electronic store. I can see it on Vijay Sales website. However, difficult to get user reviews as the model is new.

10

I forgot to mention I'm shopping from Bangalore. Don't think Vijay sales has a store here. But i found a dealer(Modern World) that says they have the newer model available and on display. Was one of the four recommended dealers by Panasonic. Will go check it out in person. From the looks of it, this is the improved version of the 602. Thanks again for the replies. They carry Hitachi too so I will get to compare. Will post after I see them in person.

SAMSUNG-RT30M3425S8/HL = 275.00 lts = 159.00 units
THAT 159 units is "per year consumption" or "per month consumption"

12
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

159 units per year.

Whirlpool has a 3 door refrigerator - Whirlpool 240 L Frost Free Triple Door Refrigerator  (240L FP 263D PROTTON). it claims it uses less power than a CFL equivalent of 60 Watts. it has mixed reviews on mouthshut / amazon / Flipcart. Have you researched this fridge from usability/durability of internal parts & compressor/ structural engineering etc ? Pl. share findings, specifically how does its power consumption compare with a BEE 4 star / 5 star. Could you also suggest any other brand / model in that spec area, would like to buy one in the next 7/10 days. Whirlpool also advises one to change filters (deodizer / freshness) every six months; that's an additional cost. can one manage (with out affecting the expected performance of clean and fresh veggies /fruits) with out changing filters? Thanks.

14
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Sanjay,

60 watts if used for 24 hours would consume 60 x 24 = 1440 Wh or 1.44 units. 1.44 units for 365 days would be 1.44 x 365 = 525.6 units which is a lot for 240 lts refrigerator. A CFL equivalent of 60 watts regular bulb would be 15 Watts (if that is what they mean). With 15 watts the annual consumption comes to 131 units. I doubt it would be 131 units because the most efficient models of this size consume about 190 units a year. So the data is confusing.

We have not researched this fridge from usability/durability of internal parts & engineering.

Filters usually require periodic changes and it would be better to do as the manufacturer recommends.

can you please discuss the types of refrigerator inverter? Also, can sudden fluctuation of energy (due to strong thunder/lighthning) can it break the inverter? Thank you

16
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What type of refrigerator inverter do you want to know about? Lightning on the wire can be very dangerous and in fact fluctuation of energy due to lightning can damage any appliance and no amount of protection can help it. Only smaller surges due to regular fluctuations can be protected using a surge protector.

I am planning to buy a new refrigerator for a family of 4 people around 10k budget but i dont have any knowledge regarding brands, types and price so pls prefer which one to buy...and also i want to know the prices after GST(july 1st) and present.
Thank you

28
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sunil,

10K would be quite less for a refrigerator. At best you will get BEE 2 or 3 star rated Direct Cool refrigerators. If you can extend it by 5-10K then you can get lot more better options.

29

Hello Abhishek,
How are you?I hope you are doing good.
I need your advice for buying Refrigerator.
Requirement-:
A)person in family -3 adult & 2 children (one is 9 years & other is 2 years old ) how much capacity do you suggest
B)Smart Inverter compressor Technology with excellent star rating ( mandatory requirement)
c) Less feature
Budget - 25 ,000/- to 36 000/- ( mandatory requirement)
I have checked for below model, please do suggest which on is good
1) LG 270 ltr GL-281BHAI Rs 25900/- (Smart inverter compressor tech, 5 Star )
2) SAMSUNG 275 ltr. RT30M3424558/HL RS 36000/- (Smart inverter compressor tech, 5 Star )
3) Or You can suggest any best option.I want to buy before 28 june.
Thank you.Keep posting.

30
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Gourav,

Size depends on your usage of the refrigerator. I have a family of similar size and I have a 320 lts model. However, if you go for a higher size model, then in the same budget you cannot get higher star rated model. You can get BEE 5 star rated models in 275 lts, but then if you go for a bigger size then at best you will get BEE 3 or 4 star rated models. If you want BEE 5 star rated models then Samsung RT30M3425S8/HL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2o1sH3K , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/y8870!NNNN ) would be a great choice.

31

Hi Abhishek usually I read your articles it is very useful but I found no articles about juicer mixer and grinders let me know which which is the best juicer mixer and grinder for a medium family

32
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I am glad that you find the research useful. As of now we have not done research on Mixer Grinders. The other appliances keep us overwhelmed (with all the research and Q&As). Mixer Grinders are in our to do list and hopefully we will cover them soon.

33

HI Abhishek
We have currently 346 Panasonic5* double door refrigerator . However we need higher /double capacity fridge with following requirement , can you suggest good model in side by side design .
Side by side design , Inverter technology , No French door , Capacity more than 700 Liters, water dispenser and Ice dispenser is NOT required , Showcase door NOT required . Budget below 100K . We have seen , Samsung 767 liters http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/side-by-side-rs62k6007s8tl/ & http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/food-showcase-rh80j81323m/ . However price of 868 liters on higher side. Can you suggest any other company's side by side models . Is any model having 80/20 ratio for fridge /freezer rather than 60/40 ratio in side by side design.

34
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I think the models you have selected from Samsung would be your best choice. Most brands do not have side by side models of that size. In general brands hardly have model with capacity more than 700 lts.

35

Hi Abhishek, I have gone through your article, video and questions from the fellow friends which were very helpful. I am planning to buy a 2 door refrigerator with capacity of between 250-300. I have shortlisted 2 models but confused to make the final decision among those, this is where I would need your expert advice.
The 2 shortlisted models are
Samsung 275 L 3 Star Frost-free Refrigerator (RT30K3723S8 , Elegant Inox) - http://www.amazon.in/Samsung-Frost-free-Refrigerator-RT30K3723S8-Elegant/dp/B01EHYF52W/ref=pd_sbs_265_11?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6EKGDSHHW0TARTV4EF6ZWhirlpool 292 L Frost Free Double Door Refrigerator (NEO DF305 PRM ALPHA STEEL(3S), Alpha Steel, 2017) 3star model - http://www.amazon.in/Whirlpool-NEO-IF305-ALPHA-STEEL/dp/B01LXAMFA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497113448&sr=8-1&keywords=whirlpool+292+l+frost+free+double+door+refrigeratorthe confusion is that though whirlpool comes with the traditional compressor but has good energy efficiency whereas Samsung comes with the latest technology of inverter based compressor but has energy efficiency slightly(248) better than whirlpool (259). whirlpool has more capacity(292 litres) as compared to Samsung(275) and is cheaper.
Overall which one has better features and which one should I prefer?

36
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Yash,

Whirlpool is energy efficient but I still feel Samsung has better technology. Inverter Technology certainly helps in keeping temperature consistent. Secondly the samsung model is a convertible refrigerator which means it has dual fan. So there is a different evaporator for fridge and freezer. Which means you have control to set temperature of fridge and freezer separately. Which is another great advantage. And if you have power cuts then inverter technology can easily connect to a power inverter as well. So I think Samsung inverter tech refrigerator is better.

37

Dear Abhishek, I had been using Kelvinator 200 Ltrs for over 20 yrs, with no problems what so ever. Then I switched to LG Double Door. After 10 yrs the compressor and cooling fan have given up. Cost of replacement, Rs 8000/- Firstly, should I go in for repairs or buy a new fridge ? Secondly, which brand has more long lasting compressor ? Choice is double door with inverter tech, 300 - 350 Ltrs. Can consider Hitachi, Panasonic, etc, too, provided after sale service is good. Like to avoid Chinese ( all products) as I consider it hostile country. Sorry for the bias, but am a die hard fauji. Request suggest latest suitable models. Many Thanks. Col S J Singh

38
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Col Singh,

These days most brands are giving 10 years warranty on the compressor (mostly for inverter tech compressor). So that should not be a big problem. In terms of efficiency, Hitachi has better models, so you can look at these:

Hitachi R-H350PND4K (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/NLCerTuuuN )
Hitachi R-SG31BPND (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2rid8Fz , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/NKJ9ZTuuuN )

If you want more energy efficient ones then you can look at these from LG and Samsung:

Thank you for the prompt reply. Are the above Samsung models old as I couldn't find the Samsung models on their website ? How is Samsung RS58K6417SL / RS51K5460SL / RS51K56H02A / Hitachi R-W720FPND1X ?

42
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vedant,

They are available on Samsung website:

Samsung RS21HUTPN1 : http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/refrigerators/side-by-side/RS21HUTPN1/XTL/

Samsung RS552NRUA7E : http://www.samsung.com/in/refrigerators/side-by-side-rs552nrua7e/

The models you have listed are also good ones but there is more positive user feedback for the ones I listed. Samsung in general uses Twin Cooling which gives you an option to control temperature of the compartment independently. Because each compartment has different evaporator, there is no mixing of air from both the compartments keeping the odors separate. Also it gives lot of flexibility in altering the temperatures of each compartment individually as well. However, as these models are not rated by BEE, we do not have energy consumption data of these models. Nor do manufacturers provide the same. So even though in some cases they have mentioned that sensor help optimize energy consumption. We do not have the real test data to check the claim.

I think Samsung would be a better choice. The models you have selected are good ones.

43

Thanks a lot for the response ! I will check the models and will let you know before finalising it.

Deepak Vijayvergiy

Hi,
I have a 250+ liters (<300 l) LC refrigerator, currently its connected to 15 A socket. Our society has a DG backup, which provides backup to all of our 5 Amp plug-points.
My understanding from some research suggests that refrigerator can work with 5A without any issues? Is that correct? Can I connect refrigerator to 5 A socket, so that during power-cuts, my fridge can get be UP.

45
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Is it an old refrigerator or new one. Still it should easily work in less than 5Amp. But the newer ones certainly can work in less than 5 Amp.

46
Deepak Vijayvergiy

Thanks Abhishek.
Its 5 yrs old LG refrigerator.

Thanks
Deepak

47
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

It should still work on 5 Amp plug.

48

Thanks again.

Hi Abhishek,

I am planing to buy refrigerator of 470-500 ltrs capacity, I am confused between Panasonic NRBX468VSX1 and LG GLT533GNSX. can you please suggest. I am open for more suggestion.

50

Among the bottom freezer models I think Panasonic NRBX468VSX1 would be a great choice. Hitachi also has a few models. You can also check Hitachi R-WB480PND2 (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2rTDwns , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/20vyl!NNNN )

Hi Abhishek,
We live in Bangalore where there is a lot of power fluctuation and power cuts. We are looking to go in for 500+ liter refrigerator. What would be your suggestions. We initially wanted to go in for a Bosch, but as you mentioned it may be too power consuming. Can you please suggest what you think might be the best option in terms of keeping the unit safe in all the fluctuation.

52
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Shiela,

In general there are not too many high efficiency models in 500+ litre range. But still you can look at these that are decently efficient:

BrandModelAmazon LinkFlipkart Link

SAMSUNGRT56K6378SL/TLhttp://amzn.to/2pVtoNNhttp://fkrt.it/KEjz0TuuuN

Most refrigerators these days do not get damaged at low voltage. But yes the inverter technology ones can get damaged due to surges. Surges are sudden increase in voltage. You can protect inverter tech refrigerator by going for a surge protector. Or a voltage stabilizer with surge protection feature. You can go for something like Solatek FridgeGuard: Amazon link: http://amzn.to/2qBf9MI to protect from surges.

53

Hi Abhishek.. We are looking to buy a large refrigerator and confused between double door and side by side doors. Our budget is close 50-55K. The SBS fridge that falls into this price band is a Haier HRF 618SS (which is a 2015 model and does not run on inverter technology.. possibly doesn't even have an in built stabilizer). Besides these, we are concerned about the power consumption of a SBS and Haier brand dependency.
For double door, we've explored LG (GL-T522GNSL) and Samsung (RT42HDAGESL) both of which are 4 star rated and run on inverter technology too.

The only reason we are still bending towards SBS is aesthetics :)

Please recommend what should we do.

54
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vivek,

SBS models are not rated on BEE ratings, so unfortunately their energy consumption data is not available to make a judgement on them. Also in 50-55 K you will get the entry level SBS models. The better ones with inverter technology compressors (with some hope that they will be energy efficient) would be expensive. So I think going for double door model is wiser.

In general for aesthetics I feel that the Samsung models look better so Samsung RT42HDAGESL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2rtEiXe , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/OPLgW!NNNN ) would look better. But then LG GL-T522GNSL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2rtjeQA , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/a~0DjTuuuN ) would have more volume, better features as it is a Dual Fridge model. If aesthetics is not really high on priority then I think LG model looks better. You may also check LG GL-I472QPZL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2qyKQVd ) which is also a BEE 4 star rated model, but smaller in size and would be comparable to Samsung RT42HDAGESL.

55

Hi Abhishek,

I would like to begin by thanking you for your helpful webpage. I am planning to buy a 470 or 495 ltr model. I am confused as to what the difference is between LG GL-M542GNSL and LG GL-T 542 GNSL . Please help. Many thanks!

56
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

The main difference is that LG GL-T542GNSL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pxuyi4 , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/VvtOWTuuuN ) is a dual fridge model where the freezer can be converted to fridge if needed. This saves electricity and gives extra space in case you do not use freezer.

LG GL-M542GNSL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2qg91cG ) is a basic model and does not have dual fridge feature.

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you for your prompt response. Ca you please suggest which brand (LG, Samsung or Whirlpool) and model I should go for in 470/495 litre capacity?

I have heard by dealer that convertible model on LG gives lot of sensor problem and also when the power goes off goes back to default which is top compartment freezer even though whole fridge was set to fridge.

60
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I am not sure about it. I personally use a Samsung convertible model at my place and it works great. However, we do not have any power problems in Mumbai.

Many thanks, Abhishek!

Hi,
I would like to know buying Haier fridge is good decision or not?
I saw haier fridge back side covered completely and no grill/electricals/etc seen outside. Is it good ?

am planning to opt for modem mentioned above best single door haier fridge. My main concern in lifetime and power

63
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Haier is a premium Chinese brand. It is not bad at all. In fact it is quite good. It is cheap (just like most chinese products are fro most other brands), but Haier is not very cheap. And it is good. So I would say it is not at all a bad decision to go for Haier.

Hi Abhishek,

I am planning to buy Whirlpool refrigerator (Whirlpool 215 Imfresh ROY 5S Direct-cool Single-door Refrigerator (200 Ltrs, 5 Star Rating, Grey Titanium). But they are saying like 5star is not available in this model in 2017, whereas 5star is available for 2016 model. Is that true? can you clarify?

Thanks - Srini

67
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Srini,

From the data that I have (from BEE and Whirlpool), this model is still a BEE 5 star rated model in 2017.

68

Star rating based comparison table is now showing

69
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

We removed the brand ranking based on star rating because it was not providing much value. However, model ranking based on star rating is given above on this page.

Thanks for the info Abhishek Ji, my brother considering BOSCH refrigerator KDN30VR30I. But I haven't heard about Bosch refrigerators any where. Can you throw some light on BOSCH refrigerators and the specified model. Is it best to buy that. Thanks in advance for the help being provided.

73
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Bosch is a great german company with really good technology. However, their energy efficiency levels are not as good as several other brands. However, KDN30VR30I is a BEE 3 star rated model, so I would say that this is the most energy efficient from Bosch. Feature wise they are good and the reviews are also quite good (check amazon: http://amzn.to/2pvOcJX ). You can certainly go for this model.

74

Good morning Abhiskek, i intend to buy a double door refrigerator having latest technology (2017 model). Can you advise which are the best invertor technology refrigerator with a capaciity between 285 ltr to 325 ltr. What is your opinion about samsung RT34M3444UT 321 litre or LG GLI302RPZLPZ Steel finising refrigerator or LG GL-1322RPOL. kindly advise me THREE models in order to take a correct decision to buy a refrigerator with good features and power saving. Your valuable support is highly appreciated.

75
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I think Samsung is the most feature rich brand with quite interesting features in the refrigerator. Samsung RT34M3444UT is a good model. You may also look at Samsung RT34K37547E/HL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2qhDR5l , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/BuvOfTuuuN ). Whirlpool is also good in terms of features. It may not have inverter technology but then it is more energy efficient that inverter technology refrigerators. You can check Whirlpool NEO DF305 ROY PLUS 4S (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/wBFGp!NNNN ) ..... In LG you can check LG GL-U322JSOL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2qhpNZA , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/Bw3pzTuuuN ) .....LG GL-1322RPOL is also similar.

You will have to go for 241 or 245 lts model if you have height restriction. You can look at these models from Whirlpool or Godrej:

Hi Abhishek,
Awesome forum you are maintaining.
I hv A small query.
I like to purchase a refrigerator in 400+ ltr category. Liked the model LG ,
GL T542GNSL ( 2016 MODEL) /
GL T542GNSX (2017) Model as you have mentioned in the list.
Strangely for same 2017 model the stores( i checked with 2 stores in kolkata ) are asking 5000 lesser price than 2016 model.
Are the specs are same or degraded ?
Also any overall users review for this particular model apart from electric consumption.

Please update...

Thnks

79
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sarit,

Looks like LG has discontinued GL-T542GNSX as the specs for the same are not available on LG site now. LG GL-T542GNSL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2p5IfSh , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/UgXGzTuuuN ) is being sold as the data is there on BEE, LG website as well as on ecommerce platforms. So you can go for LG GL-T542GNSL.

Hi Abhishek,
We have Whirlpool ice magic 400 ltrs Refrigerator purchased in 2004, It is in excellent condition.... Now the problem is its' consumption is about 4-5 units per day.... I have checked it during the month of March..... Its consuming more units due to summer time? I have enquired with whirlpool abt the problem, they advised me to change the compressor, doing so it will consume less unit ? or shall I change the Refrigerator? What is the ideal power consumption of 400 ltrs Refrigerator?

81
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

2004 is quite old and I think it is better if you change the refrigerator. Most modern refrigerators of this size would consume less than 1 unit a day.

82

Hello abhishek
This is the second time i am referring to your website as i the first time was amazing and made me choose the right product.
I want to buy a stylish fridge with good features and longetivity
I would like to know the cheapest and the best side by side models and if there are not many under the range of 60k then please suggest a double door in the range of 40-47k
Thank you so much

83
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Aman,

In general Side by Side refrigerators are not rated on BEE ratings so we do not have much data to compare. But I found this good one from Haier on Flipkart: http://fkrt.it/RpG14!NNNN

Otherwise in Double Door you can look at:

LG GL-M472QPZL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oD77lv , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/Rsx2L!NNNN )
Samsung RT42K5468SL/TL (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/R8Lq~!NNNN , Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2pprgKm )

84

haier hrf-618ss 565 l side by side refrigerator. Could you review this for me abhishek as the reviews on the net are confusing and i am getting this for 47k. So please tell me about its performance and durability.

85

Aman, did you buy the Haier fridge? What is the approx power consumption ... I guess side by side doors will increase the power bill by much as they need to work harder for maintaining a larger freezer. BTW.. how are you getting it for 47K? I looked everywhere and it doesn't come cheaper than 52K (flipkart).

86
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Aman,

Haier is a leading chinese brands that is into electrical appliances. They have huge market share in China. And just like any other chinese brands in other segments (like OnePlus, Xiaomi, etc in phones or LeEco, etc in TVs) Haier has decent but cheaper products in Indian market. I checked the specs of the refrigerator and they look good. The energy consumption is less and they are giving a good warranty as well. It should work out good.

87

Dear Sir,
My query is related to "Haier Refrigerator Model No. :- HRB-3404PGG-R" . Do This Model have invertor Technology. On Amazon India It shows DC invertor compressor. But Company website Shows non invertor Model. As per Haier customer care and seller its a invertor Model. But in the Manual I do not see any mention about Invertor Technology. Thanking You.

88
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

I am not able to get the manual for this model and Haier website does say "No" for Inverter compressor. So I am not able to confirm the same. I would go by what the company website says.

89

Samsung RT37K3993BZ or Rt34m3954r7 samsung, which one should I buy.

90
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Samsung RT34M3954R7 is an old model and I am not getting the data for the same (Samsung only has a support page for the same now). I would say go for Samsung RT37K3993BZ/HL.

91

Hi
Do we have a similar table for washing machines? It would really be helpful

92
Abhishek Jain (Mod)
93

Hi Abhishek
The electricity consumption value shown in above table is in which unit or is it the cost in rupees?

94
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

The units are in killowatt hour the unit of electricity. It is not in rupees. The cost per kWh varies from state to state, and even varies with consumption (lower slabs are cheaper and higher slabs are expensive). And that is why it is difficult to give amount in rupees.

95

Hi
I'm planning to purchase a frost free refrigerator for a vegetarian family of three. I have to plan a week's meals in advance so need good one to keep raw veggies fresh for a longer time.

96
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

What is the size (volume) that you are looking for? Also what is your budget for this refrigerator?

97

Hi Abhishek,

Thanks a lot Abhishek for wonderful details and classifications.
I need a small favor for selection of Refrigerator.

Let me give details on our usage first.
Currently we have Godrej 160Ltr Frost Free Double door refrigerator which is almost 15-16 yrs old.
We are vegetarian and major use of refrigerator is to store milk and vegetables. We don't stuff it with things. I mean, in peak time its not more than 70% filled. On an avg, its 30-40% filled.
Need of ice/chilled water is not much. We prefer to drink water at room temperature or bit low but not chilled.
Details of other seasonal usages:
Winter: Used only for 7-9 hours in night while some food, vegetables and milk is stored in it. Switched off for rest of the day time.
Rainy season: 10-12 hrs. Mostly for above mentioned used.
Summer: 15-20 hrs. For cold water, food and milk storage.

With above details it might look like there is no need for a refrigerator at all, but we need it.

What I am looking for is an energy efficient option. I checked for refrigerators with 5 star rating and inverter option but those are costly like 30k+. I can invest that too if the cost is recoverable in 3-5 yrs. I mean by saving on electricity.
Please suggest a value for money option well suited for above mentioned situation.

98
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hello Mr Mohite,

Firstly you need is 160 lts and usually frost free double door models are 250 lts + and you get single door models in less than 250 lts. So I do not think you should be looking at double door models. You can get single door models (good ones) in sub 20K.

Secondly, usually refrigerator is used to keep food fresh for long time, and it stays fresh only when it is consistently kept in cold temperature. So I am not sure how you are managing the freshness of food by switching off the refrigerator. Ideally that is not how it is supposed to be used. But if you are able to manage it, well and good (you are certainly saving electricity).

Thirdly, payback can be calculated only when you are comparing two models. So if one costs Rs 5000 more than the other, then you can compare the electricity savings and tell if you can save that or not. You have mentioned 5 star as the ones that you are looking at, what is the other star rating that you would be looking at?

Finally, to give you some insights into market research for double door refrigerators: You will hardly find models with 5 star rating in market (just a handful), then you will find slightly more models in BEE 4 star and then a lot of models in BEE 3 star. The thing is that manufacturers also know which one is more viable for the consumers. Based on the current tariffs across the country, BEE 3 star rated refrigerator is viable in most places where tariff is average or less than average. BEE 4 star rated refrigerator is good in case the electricity tariff is on a higher side in your city. BEE 5 star rated refrigerator is the best if you care for the environment and future generations. Now this is when a refrigerator is used for 365 days and all throughout.

The approach that we adopt at Bijli Bachao is that we try to suggest the most energy efficient option that fits in a person's budget. If we feel that the usage is more or tariff is more, then we do suggest to go for higher budget (if possible), but if not, then we just suggest the most efficient (from good brands) in the budget. If you can let me know your budget and the size requirement (because in 160 lts you would get single door), then I can suggest the most efficient options to you.

99

Hi, we planning to buy a refrigerator in the range around Rs 50000. I am very much confused, please if you could give some suggestions for the same.

100
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sanchit,

What is the size that you are looking at? You can get list of top most efficient models in your budget on this link: https://www.bijlibachao.com/top-ten-appliances/best-single-and-double-door-refrigerators-in-india-under-50000.html

101

Size between 400-460 is sufficient.
And I want to know the best refrigerator in the respect to all the specifications, features, design, efficiency.
Thanks for the reply

102
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Sanchit,

I think Samsung RT42K5468SL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oQQAvA , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/WU6qA!NNNN ) would be the best choice as it is 415 lts, BEE 3 star rated and within your price range. And features wise it is convertible freezer fridge, cool pack (to keep freezer cool during power cuts), Power cool and power freeze for quick cooling, anti bacteria protection, etc. So it is quite good and energy efficient.

103

Thank you for your suggestion..

104

Hi Abhisek,
We are planning to buy refrigerator and washing machine. We are total 4 nos (2+2childs). Could you please suggest a good model in Both and also brand either LG or Samsung. Our budget is 30000 each. Kindly advise.

Thanks,
Vinay.

105
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Vinay,

For the washing machine you can look at these:

LG FH096WDL24 (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/oj8keTuuuN , Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oel3SL )

I would also suggest that you look at these in your budget:

Bosch WAK20165IN (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2olAxVC , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/6nwnJ!NNNN )

IFB Senorita Aqua VX - 6.5 kg (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oegN5K , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/62vn3!NNNN )

For Refrigerators you can look at these:

Whirlpool NEO DF305 ROY PLUS 4S (if you are looking for 290 lts model)

LG GL-I292STNL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2oS6shc , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/oLVioTuuuN )

LG GL-U292JSOL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nXkmL8 , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/oLprhTuuuN )

Samsung RT28K3424S8/HL

Samsung RT28K3924UZ/HL

106

I am keen to buy Bosch KDN 30vr301.Is it a good option or should I go for Samsung RT34K3723.Kindly suggest.

107

Thanks Abhisek ji
Anil

108
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Anil,

Both are BEE 3 star rated so from energy consumption point of view, there won't be much of a difference. Samsung model has Inverter Technology compressor whereas Bosch does not have it. But then Bosch is a brand known for its robust technology. I think it is a tricky choice. If you are keen on Bosch, then I would suggest that you go for it.

109

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you for such a wonderful guide. I just got a LG GL-F282RSOL model. I couldn't find this model in your list. So any inputs from you over this?

Thanks,
Pavan.

110
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Pavan,

GL-F282RSOL is not listed in BEE database. And that is the part of big challenge that I have. Manufacturers register some models with BEE which appear on it's database. They sell some of them but they sell some more that are not listed/registered with BEE. Ideally that should not happen, but then the checks and balances mechanisms at BEE are missing.

Now as per LG website, this is a BEE 4 star rated 255lts model. A similar model would have electricity consumption of 198 units per year. So it looks quite energy efficient. It has a large voltage range of 100-290V so you do not need any stabilizer for this. Technology wise it looks good. The reason it does not appear on this page is because it is not listed with BEE.

112
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

It is a french bottom freezer model which are not rated by BEE on star rating. So it's electricity consumption data is not available. But it has inverter control, so it is highly likely that it would be energy efficient. It is also CFC/HFC free, so its refrigerant will also be green and energy efficient.

113

Many thanks Abhishek. So helpful of you.

114

Dear Abhishek,

We are family of two persons currently planning to purchase a good refrigerator. Our budget is upto 20000/- INR.

Recently we have been through one of our local Haier dealer, suggesting a model Haier HRD-2204PSL-R.

We are in state of confusion to take which brand is good to fill up our needs.

Irrespective of the brand, we are thinking about a fridge with long term durability, energy saving and efficient in cooling.

So, kindly suggest a model of any brand having 190-220 L for our needs.

Thank you

Aditya

115
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Aditya,

In general LG, Samsung and Whirlpool are the leading brands in refrigerators. They have the biggest marketshare and large presence across the country. The best model that I can find in your budget and efficient/durable is:

Whirlpool 215 IMFRESH ROY 5S REGALIA (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nNAxwI , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/73QKv!NNNN )

It is a 200 lts BEE 5 star rated model. Whirlpool as a brand is really good and the model is energy saving. It has 6th sense technology from whirlpool for efficient cooling.

The Haier model you have listed is also a BEE 4 star rated one. So it is also decently good energy efficient. A few other BEE 4 star rated models from LG and Samsung include:

LG GL-B201ASDX (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ndKReP )
Samsung RR22M242YSE/NL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nqwKE4 , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/73u37!NNNN )
Samsung RR22M274YU2/NL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2nH7dbK , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/73LLv!NNNN )

Any of these models would be good & energy efficient.

1) single door
2) 5 BEE star rating

Hello Mr Sridhar,
Usually models in size range of 250-300 are double door models. You hardly get single door models in that size range. LG has recently introduced single door models with inverter technology in that size range. But then they are expensive (above Rs 20000). Also I could not find any double door models in that price as well.

120

What is your opinion about this one by videocon VZ205PT, Silver Leaf Blue? is it CFC free?

121
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

VZ205PT is one of the most energy efficient model in its segment. It will certainly be CFC free because CFCs have been phased out. Currently the refrigerants are HCFC (Hydrochloro fluro carbon), HFC (Hydro Fluro Carbon) and HC (Hydrocarbon). Of these HC are the best. R-600A is HC.

122

Really interesting discussions Abhishek, I must congratulate you on this website and your patient answers. I am interested in a 180 to 190 single door refrigerator. could you recommend me one that has 5 star invertor technology and does not use fluorocarbons?

123
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Bhanu,

Only LG and Samsung have inverter technology in single door. You can look at these models:

Samsung RR20K282ZR2 (BEE 5 star rated model)
Samsung RR20K282ZU2 (BEE 5 star rated model)
LG GL-B201ASDX (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2ndKReP ) (this is BEE 4 star rated model from LG)

Most refrigerators these days use R-600A which is not a flurocarbon.

124
Parita Contractor

Hello Sir,
We have done some research & now thinking to buy LG's 470 ltr double door refrigerator. Is there any other model which is better than this?
Between Samsung & LG we found LG's interior & the quality of acrylic is quite better than Samsung. Even overall we like LG more. I want to know our choice is good or not & what r the cons?

125
Abhishek Jain (Mod)

Hi Parita,

LG GL-T522GNSL (Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/hbHEkTuuuN ) is the best 470 lts model in the market. You may also look at LG GL-T542GNSL (Amazon Link: http://amzn.to/2o10Z7l , Flipkart Link: http://fkrt.it/hbTAHTuuuN ) if you want a bigger size. I do not see many cons over there as long as you are satisfied with interior arrangement of the fridge and the make of it.
